The effects of particle size distribution on the magnetorheological response of inverse ferrofluids was investigated using controlled mixtures of two monodisperse non-magnetisable powders of sizes $4.6\;{\mu}m\;and\;80{\mu}m$ at constant volume fraction of 30%, subjected to large amplitude oscillatory shear flow. In the linear viscoelastic regime (pre-yield region), it was found that the storage and loss moduli were dependent on the particle size as well as the proportion of small particles, with the highest storage modulus occurring for the monodisperse small particles. In the nonlinear regime (post yield region), Fourier analysis was used to compare the behaviour of the $1^{st}\;and\;3^{rd}$ harmonics ($I_{1}\;and\;I_{3}\;respectively$) as well as the fundamental phase angle as functions of the applied strain amplitude. The ratio of $I_{3}/I_{1}$ was found to become more pronounced with decreasing particle size as well as with increasing proportion of small particles in the bidisperse mixtures. Furthermore, the phase angle was able to clearly show the transition from solid-like to viscous behaviour. The results suggested that the nonlinear response of a bidisperse IFF is dependent on particle size as well as the proportion of small particles in the system.

The imput-output relations for nonlinear systems can be explicitly represented by the Volterra series and they can be characterized by the Volterra kernels. This study is concerned with modeling an elastomer force-displacement relation due to step inputs by utilizing the truncated Volterra series. Since it is practically impossible to apply step inputs that have infinite slope at zero time, the loads due to constant penetration(displacement) rate followed by constant penetration inputs are measured as an alternative approach and estimated for step inputs and then utilized for the truncated Volterra series models. One second order and one third order truncated Volterra series models have been employed to model the force-displacement relation which is one of the prominent properties to characterize the viscoelastic material. The third order truncated Volterra series model has better results, compared with those of the second order truncated Volterra series model.
Vacuum-assisted thermoforming is one of the critical steps for successful application of film insert molding (FIM) to make parts of complex shape. If the thickness distribution of the formed film is non-uniform, then cracking, deformation, warpage, and wrinkling can easily occur at the injection molding stage. In this study, the simulation of thermoforming was performed to predict the film thickness distribution, and the results were compared with experiments. Uniaxial tensile tests with a constant crosshead speed for various high temperatures were conducted to investigate the stress-strain behavior. An instance of yielding occurred at the film temperature of $90^{\circ}C$, and the film stiffness increased with increasing crosshead speed. Two types of viscoelastic models, G'Sell model, K-BKZ model, were used to describe the measured stress-strain relationship. The predicted film thickness distributions were in good agreement with the experimental results.
This work presents a new strategy to model stress dependent relaxation process in large deformation. The strategy is relied on the fact that in some particular soft materials undergoing large deformation, e.g., elastomers, rubbers and soft tissues, the relaxation time depends strongly on stress levels. To simplify the viscoelastic model, we consider that the relaxation time is the function of previous elastic deviatoric stress state experienced by materials during loading. Using the General Maxwell Model (GMM), we simulate numerically conditions with the constant and the stress dependent relaxation time for uniaxial tension and compression loading. Hence, it can be shown that the proposed model herein not only can represent different relaxation time for different stress level but also maintain the capability of the GMM to model hysteresis phenomena.

A new solution for the dynamic analysis of as asphalt concrete pavements under moving loads has been developed. The asphalt concrete pavement can be modeled in elastic or viscoelastic medium of multi-layered structure. The subgrade can be modeled as either a rigid base or a semi-infinite halfspace. The loads may be constant or arbitrary circular loads into one direction. The method utilizes the Complex Response Method of transient analysis with a continuum solution in the horizontal direction and a finite-element solution in the vertical direction. This proposed method incorporates such important factors as wave propagation, inertia and damping effects of the medium as well as frequency-dependent asphalt concrete properties. The proposed method has been validted with the full-scale field truck test, which was conducted on instrumented asphalt concrete section on a test track at PACCAR Technical Center in Mount Vernon, Washington. Comparison with field strain data from full-scale pavement tests has shown excellent agreement. Theoretical results have shown that the effect of vehicle speed is significant and that it is in part due to the frequency-dependent
In this research, the size-dependent impact of an embedded piezoelectric nanoplate subjected to in-plane loading on free vibration characteristic is studied. The foundation is two-parameter viscoelastic. The nonlocal elasticity is employed in order to capture the influence of size of the plate. By utilizing Hamilton's principle as well as the first- order shear deformation theory, the governing equation and boundary conditions are achieved. Then, using Navier method the equations associated with the free vibration of a plate constructed piezoelectric material under in-plane loads are solved analytically. The presented formulation and solution procedure are validated using other papers. Also, the impacts of nonlocal parameter, mode number, constant of spring, electric potential, and geometry of the nanoplate on the vibrational frequency are examined. As this paper is the first research in which the vibration associated with piezoelectric nanoplate on the basis of FSDT and nonlocal elasticity is investigated analytically, this results can be used in future investigation in this area.
The aim of this study was to elucidate chemical structures and rheological properties of arabinogalactans (AGs) isolated from three legumes including black gram (BG), great northern bean (GNB), and California small white bean (CSWB). The ratio of galactose to arabinose (G/A) in three legumes increased in the order of BG > GNB > CSWB. The rheological measurements of 1-5% (w/v) AG solutions revealed Newtonian and non-Newtonian flow behaviors. BG exhibited yield stress, indicating plastic behavior. Small-amplitude oscillatory tests indicated viscoelastic properties of BG, GNB, and CSWB ranging from solid-like, paste-like, and liquid-like behaviors, respectively. Small-strain oscillatory tests were conducted to assess the structure recovery of the AGs after pre-shearing. G" values of BG and GNB increased, but those of CSWB remained constant after shearing. These results suggest that the chemical structures of the AGs, particularly their G/A ratios, influence their rheological properties.
Recent results obtained for the port-pom model and the constitutive equations with time-strain separability are examined. The time-strain separability in viscoelastic systems Is not a rule derived from fundamental principles but merely a hypothesis based on experimental phenomena, stress relaxation at long times. The violation of separability in the short-time response just after a step strain is also well understood (Archer, 1999). In constitutive modeling, time-strain separability has been extensively employed because of its theoretical simplicity and practical convenience. Here we present a simple analysis that verifies this hypothesis inevitably incurs mathematical inconsistency in the viewpoint of stability. Employing an asymptotic analysis, we show that both differential and integral constitutive equations based on time-strain separability are either Hadamard-type unstable or dissipative unstable. The conclusion drawn in this study is shown to be applicable to the Doi-Edwards model (with independent alignment approximation). Hence, the Hadamardtype instability of the Doi-Edwards model results from the time-strain separability in its formulation, and its remedy may lie in the transition mechanism from Rouse to reptational relaxation supposed by Doi and Edwards. Recently in order to describe the complex rheological behavior of polymer melts with long side branches like low density polyethylene, new constitutive equations called the port-pom equations have been derived in the integral/differential form and also in the simplifled differential type by McLeish and carson on the basis of the reptation dynamics with simplifled branch structure taken into account. In this study mathematical stability analysis under short and high frequency wave disturbances has been performed for these constitutive equations. It is proved that the differential model is globally Hadamard stable, and the integral model seems stable, as long as the orientation tensor remains positive definite or the smooth strain history in the flow is previously given. However cautious attention has to be paid when one employs the simplified version of the constitutive equations without arm withdrawal, since neglecting the arm withdrawal immediately yields Hadamard instability. In the flow regime of creep shear flow where the applied constant shear stress exceeds the maximum achievable value in the steady flow curves, the constitutive equations exhibit severe instability that the solution possesses strong discontinuity at the moment of change of chain dynamics mechanisms.

The most important elements in flexible pavement design criteria are stress and strain distributions. To obtain reasonable stress and strain distributions in pavements, moving wheel loads must be applied to analyze the pavement responses. In this study, finite element analysis was used to identify the three-dimensional states using the vehicle load into a constant-position / time-variable load (25, 50 and 80km/hr). In an elastic system, the strain is the same in both longitudinal and transverse directions under a single wheel. However, the same is not necessary in a viscoelastic system. Test results showed that the maximum values between transverse and longitudinal strains the bottom of asphalt concrete base layers under 25km/hr were were about 40 percent.

The objective of the present study is to investigate the characteristics of the dividing flow in the laminar flow region. Using glycerine water solution(wt43%) for Newtonian fluid and the polymer of viscoelastic fluid(500wppm) for non-Newtonian fluid, this research investigates the flow state of the dividing tube in steady laminar flow region of the two dimensional dividing tube by measuring the effect of Reynolds number, dividing angle, and the flow rate ratio on the loss coefficient. In T- and Y-type tubes, the loss coefficients of the Newtonian fluid decreases in constant rate when the Reynolds number is below 100. The effect of the flow rate ratio on the loss coefficients is negligible. But when the Reynolds number is over 100, the loss coefficient with various flow rate ratios approach an asymptotic value. The loss coefficient of the non-Newtonian fluid for different the Reynolds number shows the similar tendency of the Newtonian fluid. And when the Reynolds number is over 300, the loss coefficient is approximately 1.03 regardless of flow rate ratio or the dividing angle. The aspect ratio does hardly influence the reattachment length and the loss coefficient of both Newtonian and non Newtonian fluid. The loss coefficient decreases as the Reynolds number increases. The loss coefficient of Newtonian fluid is larger than that of non-Newtonian fluid.
