  • Northern pipevine (Aristolochia contorta) commonly inhabits marginal areas between waterside and terrestrial vegetation. In particular, A. contorta is ecologically important in the marginal areas as a food plant of dragon swallowtail butterfly (Sericinus montela), which is designated as vulnerable species in the Republic of Korea. For long-term sustainability of the plant population, assessment of the genetic diversity of exist populations should be conducted. Genomic DNA of A. contorta leaf samples were extracted from four populations where the vigorous growth were observed in the South Korea. Intra-population genetic diversity and inter-population genetic distance were assessed using randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) with five polymorphic random primers. Overall genetic diversity was lower, compared to other wetland species (h: 0.0607 ~ 0.1401; I: 0.0819 ~ 0.1759), while GP showed the highest intra-population genetic diversity. Despite of the geographical distance, GP showed the larger genetic distance from other populations. This result seemed to be caused by the fragmented habitat and lower sexual reproduction of A. controta. Mixture of the different source populations and construction of the proper environmental condition such as shade and physical support for sexual reproduction should be considered for conservation of A. contorta population.

  • This study aimed to provide ecological information by identifying the stand characteristics of Larix kaempferi forest vegetation (deforestation, forest influence, patch, forest) for aggregated retention harvest in Mt. Nambyeongsan, Pyeongchang-Gun. Data were collected using the Braun-Blanquet vegetation survey method from July 2020, with 54 quadrats analyzed for importance value, species diversity, similarity index, and detrended correspondence analysis (DCA). The results showed that vine species had a higher importance value in the deforestation area and forest influence area. Forest regions had the highest species diversity (2.419), while the forest influence area had the lowest(2.171). The similarity index was highest between the forest region and patch area (0.723), and lowest between the patch area and forest influence area (0.658), which was consistent with the DCA results. In conclusion, although species diversity temporarily showed higher values in the initial stage after aggregated retention harvest, it was difficult to assign ecologically specific meanings to these values. Long-term monitoring is therefore necessary to accumulate ecological information on aggregated retention harvests.

  • The purpose of this study was to provide basic information on ecological forest management in Janggunbong, Bonghwa-Gun. Vegetation data were collected from Janggunbong, Bonghwa-Gun, from July, 2014 to October, 2015. We carried out an analysis of vegetation types on the physiognomically dominant species of 111 quadrates. In the natural forest area, the vegetation community was classified into Quercus mongolica, Betula schmidtii, Pinus densiflora, Quercus variabilis and Tilia amurensis. In the plantation area, the vegetation community was classified into Pinus koraiensis, Larix kaempferi, Fraxinus rhynchophylla and Betula platyphylla var. japonica. Based on the analysis of the importance value of the species in the slope area, it was seen that the tree layers of the natural forest were dominated by Quercus mongolica at 44.3, and Pinus densiflora at 12.1. The importance values of the subtree layer of the natural forest were found to be 27.6 for Quercus mongolica, and 12.4 for Fraxinus sieboldiana. Also, the importance values of the tree layers in the plantation areas were found to be 22.6 for Pinus koraiensis, 15.4 for Larix kaempferi, and 13.3 for Fraxinus rhynchophylla, while those of the subtree layers of the plantation area were found to be17.9 for Quercus variabilis, 14.1 for Parthenocissus tricuspidata, and 10.4 for Quercus mongolica in that order. Vine plants showed higher importance values in the plantation area than in the natural forest area. Species diversity in the valley area was 2.334 in the natural forest area, and 1.734 in the plantation area. That of natural forest area was 1.931, and that of plantation area was 1.927 in slope area. For management of the forest vegetation in Mt. Janggunbong, a distinct forest management plan, customized for each topography and physiognomical community unit should be made Particularly, the administration is required to consider strategies to reduce the higher importance value for vine plants in the plantation areas.

  • We examined for differences in the growth and fertility of microscopic stages between Costaria costata and Undaria pinnatifida in crossed temperature×irradiance (12, 17, 22℃×20, 60 μmol photons m–2s–1) and daylength×irradiance (8, 12, 16, 24 h×20, 60 μmol photons m–2s–1) experimental designs. After 13 days in culture, maximum gametophyte growths of the two species were obtained under the following combinations of factors: 17℃×60 μmol photons m–2s–1 and 24 h daylength×60 μmol photons m–2s–1. C. costata gametophytes produced sporophytes about 6 days earlier than those of U. pinnatifida. Sporophyte densities were highest in the 12 h daylength×60 μmol photons m–2s–1 combination after 20 days in C. costata (9.7 plants mm–2) and 26 days in U. pinnatifida (9.1 plants mm–2). However, optimal growth conditions for the microscopic sporophytes differed between species: 17℃×60 μmol photons m–2 s–1 for C. costata, 12℃×60 μmol photons m–2 s–1 for U. pinnatifida. Thus, C. costata gametophytes grew faster and produced sporophytes earlier than those of U. pinnatifida, even though the haploid gametophytes of the two species responded similarly to environmental conditions. Optimal growth temperatures for the microscopic sporophytes also differed between species.

  • Growth patterns after the cutting and burning of Miscanthus sacchariflorus community were analyzed in the Woopo Wetland. Three replicates of 5 ${\times}$ 5 m plot of control, burning, and cutting treatments were established in April 2003 and changes of growth pattern were monitored by August 2003. In the control, burning, and cutting plots, a total of 7 families and 8 species, 14 families and 18 species, 6 families and 8species were observed respectively. Burning plot showed high diversity of flora. However, high diversity declined after July and all plots showed a similar species diversity. Vine plant, Humulus japonicus, dominated in the burning plots. Change of shoot density was highest in the early period in the burning plots (176/$m^2$) and shoot density in early May was almost double of the control and cutting plots. Toward to the end of active growth period (August), shoot density in cutting plot (170 ${\pm}\;7/m^2$)was higher than that of burning plots (141 ${\pm}\;9/m^2$). Shoot length of the cutting, burning, and control plot was 205 ${\pm}$ 15 cm, 190 ${\pm}$ 17 cm, and 187 ${\pm}$ 6 cm (n> 100) respectively. Above- ground biomass of cutting plots was higher than that of burning and control plots. Above- ground biomass of cutting plot was 1.6 times higher than the control while burning plot showed 1.4 times. This study indicted that cutting of Miscanthus sacchariflorus community increase shoot density development, length growth, and above- ground biomass.

  • The main purpose of this study is to examine the use of plant species in ecological restoration projects. To this end, planting drawings from 58 sites that had completed the return of the ecosystem conservation cooperation fund for the past six years were collected and analyzed. The analysis used the construction completion and design drawings to determine the overall selection status and analyze frequency by classifying planted plants into wild and cultivated plants by nature, size, vegetation climate, and upland and wetland habitat. The investigation and analysis process found many cases of wrong plant names, so an analysis was also performed on the matter. In the 58 investigation sites, 282 plants were used for planting: 91 tree species, 69 shrub species, 11 vine species, and 111 herbal species. The most commonly used plant species was Spiraea prunifolia f. simpliciflora, followed by Sorbus alnifolia, Quercus acutissima, Zoysia japonica, Callicarpa dichotoma, and Weigela subsessilisin that order. The most commonly used tree species was Sorbus alnifolia, followed by Quercus acutissima, Zelkova serrata, Chionanthus retusus, and Cornus officinalis, in that order. The most commonly used shrub species was Spiraea prunifolia f. simpliciflora, followed by Weigela subsessilis, Callicarpa dichotoma, Rhododendron yedoense f. poukhanense. and Euonymus alatusin that order. The most commonly used herbal plant species was Zoysia japonica, followed by Dendranthema zawadskii var. latilobum, Aster koraiensis, Miscanthus sacchariflorus, and Pennisetum alopecuroidesin that order. In the analysis by vegetation climate, Spiraea prunifolia f. simpliciflora, Callicarpa dichotoma, and Sorbus alnifoliawere most used in that order in both the temperate central and the warm temperate forest zones, but the pattern does not properly reflect the climate characteristics. In the analysis by habitat, Miscanthus sacchariflorus and Lythrum salicariawere most used in the wetland. In particular, the ratio of wild plants to cultivated plants was 76% to 24%, indicating the ratio of selecting cultivated plants was high. The names of plants on the drawings were mostly common names that did not appear in the Korea National Arboretum or the National Species List of Korea. It is necessary to use proper plant names in the future. Regarding the use of planting plants for ecological restoration, it is necessary to adopt the approach of diversifying selected plants, selecting plants according to characteristics of climate zones, and lowering the specifications of plants used for ecological restoration. Moreover, it is important to fully understand the ecological characteristics of wetland plants and minimize the ratio of using cultivated plants to ensure the plant selection centered on wild plants.

  • The forest management paradigm has recently shifted from focusing on commercial production to focusing on ecosystem management. Accordingly, a natural seedling regeneration method that has a naturally high affinity has attracted much attention in recent years. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship among various environmental factors, lower stratum vegetation, and seedling regeneration in Pinus densiflora forests. The survey site comprised 50 sectors divided using the line transect method, and the survey data were divided into those from wet habitat (19 sites) and dry habitat (31 sites), depending on the soil humidity, and were analyzed separately to show the close relationship between soil humidity and natural seedling regeneration. As a result, the dry habitat exhibited high seedling density (157,419 trees/ha), with the main species being Quercus serrata, Zanthoxylum piperitum, Smilax china, and Pueraria lobata, while wet habitat exhibited low seedling density (57,895 trees/ha), with the main species being Stephanandra incisa, Castanea crenata, Lespedeza maximowiczii, Lysimachia barystachys, Aralia elata, and Styrax japonicus. The height and root-collar diameter under wet conditions exhibited faster growth than those under dry conditions. Height growth by the root-collar diameter in dry habitat increased faster than that in wet habitat. It was also confirmed that seedling regeneration in wet habitat exhibited a rapid growth pattern 5 years after germination. These results suggest that the seedlings begin to grow more rapidly after a period of suppression by competition with surrounding plants. Considering an ecosystem or ecological management approach, specific practices, such as bush control and vine clearing in wet habitats, should be more intensively conducted, especially at the beginning of the management operations.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze forest vegetation structure in Marugeum (the ridge line) area between Dakmokryeong and Daetjae in Baekdudaegan through vegetation classification, importance value, species diversity, and CCA using the data that were collected from 245 quadrates through Braun-Blanquet vegetation survey method from May to September in 2017. The results of the forest vegetation classification identified 8 vegetation units with Quercus mongolica community group at the highest level. Q. mongolica community group was classified into the Cornus controversa community, Buxus koreana community, Sasa borealis community, Abies nephrolepis community, and Q. mongolica typical community. C. controversa community was further classified into Quercus dentata group, Filipendula glaberrima group, Larix kaempferi group, and C. controversa typical group. The result of the important value analysis showed that Q. dentata had the highest importance value at 19.1% in vegetation unit 1 while Q. mongolica had the highest importance value at 22.7%, 38.3%, 25.6%, 41.3%, 27.9%, and 41.6% in vegetation unit 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8, respectively, and L. kaempferi had the highest importance value at 27.6% in vegetation unit 3. As such, Q. mongolica species generally represented the communities of Marugeum (the ridge line) area of Dakmokryeong to Daetjae in Baekdudaegan. The results of species diversity showed that vegetation unit 1 and 2 were 3.305 and 3.236, respectively, which were relatively higher than other vegetation units. It was considered that this result was due to the influence of high emergence of present species. The results of the CCA analysis of the correlations between biotic environmental factors and vegetation types showed that vegetation unit 1 was mainly correlated with the megaphanerophyte ratio and vine plant ratio. In the correlations between abiotic environmental factors and vegetation types, vegetation unit 7 was significantly correlated with altitude. From the perspective of ecological management, vegetation unit 5 represented by B. koreana community was inhabited by a variety of plants due to the species composition and location environment due to the geological characteristics that are typical of limestone area. Vegetation unit 7 represented by A. nephrolepis community was typified as subalpine vegetation widely distributed by relict species and endemic species. We concluded that it is necessary to manage these vegetation units with an ecologically differentiated approach.
