  • This work was conducted to investigate the field growth and yield of the sweetpotato (Ipomoea batatas) slips grown under different light emitting diodes (LEDs). Sweet potato cuttings of 3 cultivars ('Matnami', 'Shinhwangmi', and 'Yeonhwangmi') were cultivated under fluorescent lamp (FL) and several LEDs (PPF $150{\pm}5{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$ at 20cm distance) in deep flow culture system for 20 days. The plants were acclimatized under sunlight for 10 days, and then cuttings (30cm length) were planted with $75{\times}25cm$ planting density on June 10th, covered with black vinyl film during growth period. Length and diameter of vine, number of root were excellent in the red plus blue (7:3) LED than the other treatments. At 30 days after planting, the survival rate in red plus blue (7:3) LED was significantly higher than that in FL and red LED, and it was not different among cultivars. Vine length, vine diameter, and number of node were not significant among LED light qualities and cultivars. After 120 days in the field cultivation, vine length, vine diameter, number of node, number of branch, and fresh weight of shoot were not significant among LED light qualities, but those except the number of branch showed significant differences among cultivars. Yield characteristics among LED light colors were not significant, but weight of storage root per plant, mean weight of storage root, and yield showed significant differences among cultivars. The yield per 10a in 'Matnami', and 'Yeonhwangmi' was significantly higher than that in 'Shinhwangmi'.

  • The in vitro growth of virus-free sweet potato [Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam.] plantlets was investigated under different light sources: fluorescent lamp (control); red (660 nm), blue (460 nm), white light-emitting diodes (LED), and two mixtures of blue and red LED (R:B = 8:2, and 7:3). Single node explants (10 mm) of three cultivars ('Matnami', 'Shincheonmi', and 'Yeonhwangmi') were cultured on Murashige and Skoog medium supplemented with $0.2mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ 6-benzyladenine for 4 weeks. Explants were exposed to $150{\pm}5{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$ photosynthetic photon flux at a distance of 20 cm, constant temperature of $25^{\circ}C$, and under 16/8-h (day/night) photoperiod. Using the same method, the in vitro growth of 10 cultivars under red LED was also compared. After 3 weeks, vine length was highest in plantlets cultured under red LED, and lowest in plantlets cultured under blue LED. Fresh and dry weights were also greatest in plantlets cultured under red LED. Compared to the control, vine thickness was significantly higher in plantlets grown under white LED and the 7:3 R:B LED mixture. Significant differences were observed among the 10 cultivars grown under red LED. 'Matnami', 'Shincheonmi', and 'Shinhwangmi' all had excellent vine lengths, and fresh and dry weights. Compared to the control, vine elongation of sweet potato plantlets was most effective under red LED, and culture duration was about 1 week shorter.

  • This study was performed to discover the comparison of the understory species composition and the growth velocity of the regeneration seedlings in Pinus densiflora forests being managed by the seed-tree method from 2008 year. The investigation site located in Bonghwa, Gyeongsangbuk-do province was established by eighteen quadrats such as six control ones, six slope ones and 6 concave ones, in which we carried out the vegetation survey and measured annual height growth of each seedlings. As a result of vegetation analysis, the understory vegetation of the seed-tree forest area was mainly composed of shrub plants such as Lespedeza bicolor, Zanthoxylum schinifolium, Securinega suffruticosa, Lespedeza maximowiczii and Stephanandra incisa, herb plants such as Miscanthus sinensis var. purpurascens, Carex humilis var. nana, Spodiopogon sibiricus and Artemisia keiskeana, and vine plants such as Pueraria lobata, Smilax sieboldii, Dioscorea batatas, Actinidia arguta, Vitis amurensis and Rubus crataegifolius. Especially, the vine plants were relatively more imported to the concave site than the control site and the slope site. As a result of measurement of growth velocity, the seedlings of the Pinus densiflora appeared to be 3,175 trees/ha for the non-suppressed trees and 7,842 trees/ha for the suppressed trees. In cases of the concave site, individuals of seedlings were much lower than those on the slope site, probably due to the competition effects of vine plants. Consideringly, silvicultural practices for clearing the vine plants should be inevitably accompanied. Also, the growth velocity of the suppressed and non-suppressed trees has been constantly increasing, those of the non-suppressed trees much higher than the suppressed trees. This represents that the seedlings grow rapidly after the suppressed period with competition to the surrounding plants. Therefore, specific practices such as blush control and vine clear should be carried out at the beginning stage of regeneration in the seed-tree stand.

  • Newly introduced two lines of apios (Apios americana Medikus, red-vine and green-vine) were grown in Jeju island, to clarify their growth and production characteristics as well as to develope as a new edible crops in Korea. Both lines bloomed but did not develop to pod and seed. The red-viny line showed the habit of more early growth and maturity compared with green-viny line. Fresh tuber yields per 10a harvested in late November ranged from about 500kg to 800kg as according to the lines and cultural condition. Fresh tuber yield of red-viny line was relatively greater than that of green-viny line, mainly due to their higher tuber number per plant. Among the planting dates(April 1, April 16 and May 1) of seed tubes, highest tuber yield was obtained on May 16 planting. And the stacking cultivation culture was better than non-stacking cultivation in respect of tuber yield and disease avoidance. These results indicate that apios can produce in Jeju island, and in order to extend its cultivation to farmers it will be needed to develope some cultivars with high yields as well as labor-saving cultivation methods.

  • To develop a technique for mass-propagation of virus-free sweet potato [Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam.] plant using nutrient film technique (NFT), the growth characteristics of 4 cultivars as affected by nutrient solution composition and cutting size were investigated. 72 cells (35 mL/cell) plug trays filled with vermiculite and perlite (1:1, v/v) were used. Vine length, fresh and dry weights of virus-free plants were the greatest in the nutrient solution recommended by National Horticultural Research Station in Japan, followed by that recommended by National Institute of Horticultural & Herbal Science in Korea, and Yamazaki's nutrient solution for lettuce. The growth of uppershoot cuttings was the best among 4 subsections of cutting. Vine length, and fresh and dry weights increased in the longer cutting treatments, and were better in 'Shinzami' and 'Yeonhwangmi' than those in 'Mannami' and 'Shincheonmi'. Vine diameter and length of the longest root were not significantly affected by the cutting size and cutting source. The growth characteristics of the single node cutting were not significantly different from those in 2-node cutting. The efficiency of rapid mass-propagation could be promoted with single node cuttings and uppershoot cuttings grown in NFT system.

  • To obtain the basic information of high yielding ability for varietal improvement and cultural practice, reciprocal grafts were made analyzed among five sweet potato cultivars. Five cultivars were characterized with the different in whose source and sink capacities. Grafting decreased main vine length, number of tuberous roots per plant, but its effects were different among grafting combinations. The growth of vines was affected more by scion, while growth and yield of under-ground were influenced more by stock. Grafting effects, interactions between stock and scion for main vine length and number of tuberous roots were highly significant in diallel grafting. The percentage of marketable tuberous roots was higher in the order of stem cutting>self grafting>reciprocal grafting.

  • We investigated the effect of infection time of CGMMV on the growth and quality of watermelon and cucumber plants. The effect (damages by CGMMV) was estimated on the watermelon where CGMMV had been inoculated at different growth stages, vegetative (transplanting stage, vegetative growth stage) and reproductive growth stage (fruiting stage and fruit hypertrophy stage). In the case of cucumber, CGMMV was inoculated at transplanting stage and Erst flowering stage, respectively. When watermelon was infected with CGMMV at vegetative growth stage, vine length, internode length, leaf area, and fruit weight of the plants largely decreased compared with control plants, while the infected plant growth was not very different from control plants when it was infected at reproductive growth stage. Brix of the fruit of watermelon also decreased when the plants was infected with the virus earlier than fruiting stage. The occurrence of 'Pisubag', internal discoloration and decomposition of watermelon fruits, tended to be increased as earlier infection time with CGMMV In the case of cucumber infection time with CGMMV did not influence earlier growth of the plants, but did later growth showing that plant height, vine length, internode length, number of leaf, leaf wide, and leaf length of the plants decreased as infection time became to be earlier.

  • Growth characteristics and changes of pigment content of purple sweet potato (PSP) during growth were investigated. Vine length of PSP was increased to the maximum length of 130 cm after 100 days of growth. Numbers of branches and nodes were increased to the maximum of 21and 550, respectively, after 120 days of growth. Vine weight was also increased to the maximum of 4,384 kg/10a after 120 days of growth, while the weight of marketable root was increased continuously to the end of the growth period of 150 days to reach the production of 1,875 kg/10a. Uniquely considerable amount of anthocyanin pigment has been developed in both skin and flesh of young roots harvested after 40 days of growth. The pigment content was increased slowly until 140 days of growth then decreased. This fact indicates that the best time for harvesting of PSP is 140 days after planting.
