Storage root yield of sweetpotato was decreasing owing to continuous sweetpotato cropping, debasement of soil physical properties, increasing incidence of pest and disease. This study was conducted to evaluate the changes in physicochemical properties of the soil owing to subsoiling (subsoiling to 50 cm depth), and the effect on growth and yield of sweetpotato. The subsoiling treatments included subsoiling treated every year for two years, subsoiling in the first year, and no subsoiling control. The soil physical properties measured were bulk density, hardness, porosity, three phase. Bulk density, porosity, soild (%) of three phase were improved by subsoiling in topsoil and subsoil. Main vine length and vine yield in subsoiling soil were higher than those in no subsoiling soil, but those were not significantly different. Yield of marketable storage root in subsoiling soils treated every year for two years and treated in the first year was more increased 17% and 20% than no subsoiling soil, respectively. The number of marketable storage root per plant was also higher in subsoiling soils than no subsoiling soil, but it was not significantly different. Soluble solid contents and total free sugar contents of storage root of sweetpotato were not significantly different among the treatments. These results show that improving soil physical properties by subsoiling could promote high yield of marketable storage root in continuous sweetpotato cropping field.
It has been generally accepted that obesity and overweight are associated with metabolic diseases and cancer incidence. In fact, obesity increased risks of cancers i.e. breast, liver, pancreatic and prostate. Celastrol is a pentacyclic triterpenoid isolated from Thunder god vine, was used as a Chinese traditional medicine for treatment of inflammatory disorders such as arthritis, lupus erythematosus and Alzheimer's disease. Also, celastrol has various biological properties of chemo-preventive, neuro-protective, and anti-oxidant effects. Recent studies demonstrated that celastrol has anti-proliferation effects in different type of obesity-related cancers and suppresses tumor progression and metastasis. Anticancer effects of celastrol include regulation of $NF-{\kappa}B$, heat shock protein, JNK, VEGF, CXCR4, Akt/mTOR, MMP-9 and so on. For these reasons, celastrol has shown to be a promising anti-tumor agent. In this review, we will address the anticancer activities and multiple mechanisms of celastrol in obesity-related cancers.
This paper is intended to find out what kinds of fruits are mentioned in the Bible and how they were used in those days. It has also analyzed in what terms they are expressed in the Korean Version of the Bible and studied agricultural regulations involved in the religion, and allegorical uses of the fruits. Olives were the primary fruit in the economy of the ancient times, followed by figs and vines. In addition, there are mentioned in the Bible almonds, apples, dates. mulberries and pomegranates. Olive trees have been grown for more than six thousand years. The Hebrew word. Zayit is mentioned in the Bible more than fifty times. Olive trees are not so beautiful in themselves but as they give us humans abundant reap and a lot of oil, they have been thought to be beautiful. Olive trees grow well on the seaside in the salty air and fog. Vines began to grown as early as in the Bronze Age(the period of 3000 to 2000 B.C.). In Northern Greece, grape seeds were found to belong to the year 4500 B.C. or so. The vine gardens produced raisins and wine as well as vines. Figs are the fruit which are first mentioned in the Bible(Genesis 3:7) and they were the precious product of the Palestine people, which is described in Deuteronomy 8:8. Figs are sweet and watery and can easily quench thirst on hot summer days. They were used for cookies and wine in the raw or dried state. An apple, which is tappuah in Hebrew, is mentioned as 'Sagwa' six times in the Revised Korean Version, and in the Korean Joint Version it is twice mentioned as 'Sagwa' and as 'Neungum' four times. In ASV and KJV, 'apple' appears eleven times. which is because' the apple of eye' is translated in the 'Nun-dong-ja(the pupil of the eye)'In the Korean Version. 'Sagwa(apple)'of Proverb 25:11, the Song of Songs 2:3, 2:5, 7:8, 8:5 and Joel 1 :12 have been thought to be doubtful. because apple trees cannot be grown in the areas mentioned in the Bible. Some maintain that the apples in the Bible refer to apricots(Prunus armeniaca, Citrus medica L.) or golden oranges (Citrus sinensis L. Obsbeck) which is confusing. In the Revised Korean Version, 'Salgu(apricots)' appears eight times while ASV and KJV translate almond into 'Salgu'. So since translating a genuine apricot into 'Salgu' can be confusing, a great care should be taken in the translation into Korean. Some hold that as some papyri arround the year 1200 B.C. describes pomegranate, apple, olive and fig trees growing on the Nile delta, tappuah rightly refers to 'Sagwa(apple)' In the Korean Joint Version, Sagwa and Neungum are used together to refer to the same fruit, which should be avoided. It is desirable to use the same word for the same thing. Sagwa' showing up six times In the HeL.Ised Korean Version should all be replaced by 'Neungum' Dates symbolized peace and abundance were used for food in the raw or dried state, and were made into honey. Pomegranates can be eaten in the raw state and be used for sherbets and wine. Juice made of promegranates can be mixed with wine and drunk.
This study was conducted to obtain the basic information on the production of high yield and qualitied yam in Andong, major yam-producing district, in Kyongbuk province, using three major Yam cultivars, such as Danma, Jangma and Alata (round type). Alata showed the longest tuber width while Jangma showed the longest tube length. Danma showed the highest tube yield at 2,123 kg/10a. Tubes of Alata had higher dry ratio than those of other cultivars, suggesting that Alata could be used as good processing materials. Characteristics of top parts, such as vine length, leaf number, and lateral vine number showed typical sigmoid curves. Tuber characteristics such as length, width and fresh weight of tuber were linearly increased as the growth period was progressed. Relative growth rate (RGR) for new tuber and stem reached the highest value at 86 DAT (days after transplanting). There were similar tendencies among the cultivars in net assimilation rate (NAR). The highest crop growth rate (CGR) was appeared at 156 DAT regardless of cultivars. In the changes of leaf area ratio (LAR), there were significant differences among three cultivars. LAR were decreased at 86, 106 and 136 DAT for Alata, Danma and Jangma, respectively. However, specific leaf weight (SLW) was greatly increased at 176 DAT, and leaf area index (LAI) was decreased at 156 DAT in all cultivars.
Objective: The objective of this study was to compare the feeding value, meat nutrients and associative effects of a diet comprised of various corn silages inclusion with peanut vine or wheat straw in finishing beef cattle. Methods: One hundred and eighty Simmental crossbred beef steers were blocked and assigned to the follow treatments: i) whole plant corn silage-based diet (control, WPCS), ii) mixed forages-based diet (replacing a portion of corn silage with wheat straw, WPCSW), iii) corn stalklage-based diet (CS), and iv) sweet corn stalklage-based diet (SCS). Each group consisted of 5 repeated pens with 9 steers/pen. The diets were formulated to be isonitrogenous and isoenergetic with same forage to concentrate ratio. Experimental diets were fed for 90 d. Results: The effective ruminal degradability of dry matter and crude protein were highest for WPCS diet (p<0.05), for neutral detergent fiber was highest in SCS diet (p<0.05). The average daily gain was greater for cattle offered the WPCS diet, intermediate with WPCSW and SCS and lowest with CS (p<0.001). The concentration of non-esterified fatty acid in serum was higher for steers fed with CS and SCS diets than those offered WPCS and WPCSW steers (p<0.001). The treatments did not affect the general nutritional contents and amino acids composition of Longissimus dorsi of steers (p>0.05). Conclusion: The corn silage-based diet exhibited the highest feeding value. The sweet corn stalklage and wheat straw as an alternative to corn silage offered to beef cattle had limited influence on feeding value and meat nutrients. However, the value of a corn stalklage-based diet was relatively poor. To sum up, when the high quality forage resources, such as corn silage, are in short supply, or the growth rate of beef cattle decreases in the later finishing period, the sweet stalklage and wheat straw could be used as a cheaper alternative in feedlot cattle diet without sharp reducing economic benefits.

Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus (Thunb.) Matsum. & Nakai) is sensitive to low temperature and shows retarded growth under 10℃. Although early transplanting guarantees higher returns, it requires cost and labor to maintain the appropriate temperature for plant growth. Therefore, cultivars tolerant to chilling stress is necessary to reduce the cost and labor requirements. The purpose of this study is to analyze data on plant growth and fruit enlargement under continuous chilling night temperature to develop new cultivars tolerant to chilling temperature. Two cultivars expected to have chilling tolerance and another cultivar sensitive to chilling temperature were grown in greenhouses with chilling and optimal night temperature conditions. In the early growth stage after transplanting, the cultivars expected to have chilling tolerance showed better vine length, fresh weight and dry weight. However, one of the tolerant cultivars showed significantly lower vine length, leaf length and width, and petiole length than the sensitive cultivar during pollination period and later growth stage, showing genotype specific responses. The fruit length, width, and weight were also significantly lower in the tolerant cultivar. The fruit set ratio was significantly higher in the chilling sensitive cultivar than the two tolerant cultivars. These results suggest that the present chilling tolerant cultivars in watermelon were selected based on their performance in the early growth stage, and further studies on chilling tolerance in different growth and development stages are required to develop cultivars adapted to various forcing cultivation systems.
This study was conducted to investigate the actual conditions of intake of Korean traditional beverages in 273 female university students in Seoul, Korea. The subjects of this study consisted of 128 food and nutrition majors and 145 non-majors. Questionnaires were administered to the subjects who had an average age of 20 years. Two-hundred and nineteen students (80.2%) lived with their parents. Regarding the type of beverages subjects often drink, coffee was the most preferred (51.3%) overall, and non-majors (4.1%) were shown to drink traditional beverages more often. Regarding preference for traditional beverages, most subjects (72.5%) responded that they liked their own traditional beverage. However, for frequency of intake of traditional beverages, 48.7% answered they do not drink any traditional beverages. The reasons why subjects like traditional beverages were taste (71.7%) and health (26.3%), and the type of traditional beverages they often drink were Yulmu tea (35.9%), Sik hae (30.8%), and Yuja tea (10.6%), in order. Regardless of major, ginseng tea, jujube tea, mulberry-leaf tea, Chinese matrimony vine tea, ssanghwa tea, ginger tea, and omija tea were found to be satisfactory traditional beverages. Therefore, due to the low intake frequency, preference, and satisfaction of traditional beverages, new traditional beverages that can meet the standards of female students should be immediately developed.
Two oriental melons cultivars, ‘Geumssaragi Euncheon’(GSEC) and ‘House Eunchon’(HEC), were grafted onto different rootstocks and the growth, mineral contents and fruit quality were examined. The seedlings grafted onto‘Geumtozwa’rootsticks showed about 10% defected seedling loss(wilting or dwarfing0as compared to the little or no loss in the seedlings grafted onto 'Sintozwa' or 'Chamtozwa' rootstocks. The seedings grafted onto 'Sintozwa' or 'Chamtozwa' rootstocks also exhibited better vine growth as compared to the intact seedlings or the seedlings grafted onto 'Geumtozwa' rootstocks. The fruits growth, as measured by fruits length, fruit diameter and fruit fresh weight, was accelerated by the rootstocks especially by 'Sintozwa' and 'Chamtozwa' . Intact oriental melons showed the highest soluble solids content in the fruit pericarp followed by 'Chamtozwa' rootstocks. Sucrose contents were higher in the seedling grafted onto 'Sintozwa', whereas higher glucose and fructose contents were measured in intact GSEC fruits or HEC fruits on 'Chamtozwa' rootstock. As compared to the intact plants, the seedling grafted onto 'Sintozwa' rootstock showed higher N. P and K and lower Ca and Mg contents in leaves, stems, roots and fruits. 'Geumtozwa' rootstock, developed specially for oriental melons, showed very similar pattern of mineral absorption or distribution as compared to the intact plants.
Conventional shortest path searching a1gorithms are based on the partial searching method such as Dijsktra, Moore etc. The a1gorithms are effective to find a shortest path in mini-modal condition of a network. On the other hand, in multi-modal case they do not find a shortest path or calculate a shortest cost without network expansion. To copy with the problem, called Searching Area Problem (SAP), a global searching method is developed in this paper with Genetic Algorithm. From the results of two examples, we found that the a1gorithm is useful to solving SAP without network expansion.
The shortest path algorithm for route guidance is implicitly required not only to support geometrical variations of transportation network such as U-TURN or P-TURN but to efficiency search reasonable routes in searching mechanism. The purpose of this paper is to integrate such two requirements ; that is, to allow U-TURN and P-TURN possibilities and to cut down searching time in locating routes between two points (origin and destination) in networks. We also propose a new type of link searching algorithm which can solve the limitation of vine building algorithm at consecutively left-turn prohibited intersections. The test site is a block of Gangnam road network that has some left-turn prohibited and allowed U-TURN intersections. Four models have been identified to be comparatively analyzed in terms of searching efficiency. The Models are as follows : (i) Model 1 - Link Searching Dijkstra Algorithm without Searching Area Extraction (SAE) ; (ii) Model 2 - Link Searching Dijkstra Algorithm with SAE ; (iii) Model 3 - Link Searching Bidirectional Dijkstra Algorithm without SAE ; and (iv) Model 4 - Link Searching Bidirectional Dijkstra Algorithm with SAE. The results of comparative evaluation show that Model 4 can effectively find optimum path faster than any other models as expected. Some discussions and future research agenda have been presented in the light of dynamic route guidance application of the urban ATIS.
