  • This paper presents an approach to detect object distance with the use of the recently developed low-cost Kinect sensor. The technique is based on Kinect color depth-image processing and can be used to design various computer-vision applications, such as object recognition, video surveillance, and autonomous path finding. The proposed technique uses keypoint feature detection in the Kinect depth image and advantages of depth pixels to directly obtain the feature distance in the depth images. This highly reduces the computational overhead and obtains the pixel distance in the Kinect captured images.

  • This paper presents the moving objects segmentation algorithms from the sequence images in the stationary backgrounds such as surveillance camera and video phone and so on. In this paper, the moving object area is extracted with proposed object searching algorithm and then moving object is segmented within the moving object area. Also the proposed algorithms have the robustness against noise problems and results show the proposed algorithm is able to efficiently segment and track the moving object area.

  • Tracking human facial expression within a video image has many useful applications, such as surveillance and teleconferencing, etc. Initially, the Active Appearance Model (AAM) was proposed for facial recognition; however, it turns out that the AAM has many advantages as regards continuous facial expression recognition. We have implemented a continuous facial expression recognition system using the AAM. In this study, we adopt an independent AAM using the Inverse Compositional Image Alignment method. The system was evaluated using the standard Cohn-Kanade facial expression database, the results of which show that it could have numerous potential applications.

  • Human posture recognition is an attractive and challenging topic in computer vision due to its promising applications in the areas of personal health care, environmental awareness, human-computer-interaction and surveillance systems. Human posture recognition in video sequences consists of two stages: the first stage is training and evaluation and the second is deployment. In the first stage, the system is trained and evaluated using datasets of human postures to ‘teach’ the system to classify human postures for any future inputs. When the training and evaluation process is deemed satisfactory as measured by recognition rates, the trained system is then deployed to recognize human postures in any input video sequence. Different classifiers were used in the training such as Multilayer Perceptron Feedforward Neural networks, Self-Organizing Maps, Fuzzy C Means and K Means. Results show that supervised learning classifiers tend to perform better than unsupervised classifiers for the case of human posture recognition.

  • IPresented is a small and handy remotely piloted vehicle(RPV) that can be used for military and non-military surveillance operations. The RPV is equipped with an on-board high resolution color camera to transmit the analog video images and on-board electronics to provide real-time flight information to the pilot, thereby enabling him/her to remotely pilot within the range of 5 km radius. This paper describes the RPV system including its design, manufacturing and flight test results which manifest the stability of on-board mission and flight equipment as well as the remote piloting capability. A future plan for necessary improvements identified from the flight tests are also discussed.

  • Recently, the IDS(Intrusion Detection System) using a video camera is an important part of the home security systems which start gaining popularity. However, the video intruder detection has not been widely used in the home surveillance systems due to its unreliable performance in the environment with abrupt illumination change. In this paper, we propose an effective moving edge extraction algorithm from a sequence image. The proposed algorithm extracts edge segments from current image and eliminates the background edge segments by matching them with reference edge list, which is updated at every frame, to find the moving edge segments. The test results show that it can detect the contour of moving object in the noisy environment with abrupt illumination change.

  • Passenger safety is a primary concern of railway system but, it has been urgent issue that dozens of people are killed every year when they are fallen from train platforms. In this paper, we propose a vision based monitoring system for railway station platform. The system immediately perceives dangerous factors of passengers on the platform by using image processing technology. To monitor almost entire length of the track line in the platform, we use several video cameras. Each camera conducts surveillance its own preset monitoring area whether human or dangerous object was fallen in the area. Moreover, to deal with the accident immediately, the system provides local station, central control room employees and train driver with the video information about the accident situation including alarm message. This paper introduces the system overview and detection process with experimental results. According to the results, we expect the proposed system will play a key role for establishing highly intelligent monitoring system in railway.
