Conjoint Analysis of Online Content : A Case of Video on Demand Service (온라인 콘텐츠의 컨조인트 분석 : Video on Demand 서비스 사례를 중심으로)

  • This study uses conjoint analysis technique to calculate relative importance of each attribute of a specific online content: video-on-demand (VoD) services of TV soap operas. A series of interviews were conducted to identify and derive critical attributes for VoD services. Conjoint instrument was constructed using attributes identified and administered among actual viewers. Price, genre, additional service, and actors were found to be the most highly valued attributes of the VoD services. While price was the most valued attribute for female viewers, it was genre for male viewers. The result suggests that these attribute differentiation would lead to more profitable pricing scheme, and development of additional services may be critical for online content business' success.

The Impact of Mobile Channel Adoption on Video Consumption: Are We Watching More and for Longer? (모바일 채널 수용이 고객의 동영상 소비에 미치는 영향에 관한 실증 연구)

  • The advancement in mobile technology brought disruptive innovation in media industry. The introduction of mobile devices broke spatial and temporal restrictions in media consumption. This study investigates the impact of mobile channel adoption on video viewing behavior, using real-world dataset obtained from a particular on-demand service provider in South Korea. We find that the adoption of a mobile channel significantly increases the total viewing time of video-on-demand via TV and the number of contents viewed. Our results suggest that the mobile channels act as a complement channel to conventional TV channels. We provide theoretical and practical insights on consumer usage in the emerging over-the-top market.

Implementation of fast forward function in video on demand service system (주문형 비디오 서비스 시스템에서의 정방향 및 역방향 빠른재생 기능구현)

  • We propose a new scheme to provide the fast forward and reverse(FF/R) functions to users in Video On Demand Service System. The proposed scheme is to use only I and P pictures obtained by sampling MPEG2 bit-steam. New frame raes for FF/R play are specified with parameters of MPEG2 syntrx. Bits of I and P pictures are reduced in three steps: Variable length decoding(VLD), Inverse quantization and Requantization. The proposed scheme is ecnomical in the sense that it can provide FF/R function without any additional requirement on the bandwidth and on the storage media in video server.

  • VOD 서비스는 가장 유망한 ATM 서비스의 하나로 간주되고 있으며 거의 모든 시럼 서비스에서 제공되고 있다. VOD 서비스는 응용분야 및 프로그램의 내용에 따라 여러 가지로 불리우고 있으며, 이러한 이유로 사람에 따라 서로 다른 뜻으로 쓰이는 경우가 많은 점을 고려하여 DAVIC 표준에서는 더 구체적으로 VOD 서비스를 분류하였다. DAVIC에 정의된 19가지의 서비스 중에서 VOD 서비스와 관련있는 것을 보면 Movies On Demand(MOD), Near Video On Demand(MOD), Karaoke On Demand(MOD), News On Demand(MOD)등이 있으며, 이외에도 유사한 서비스들이 있다. 본 고에서는 VOD 서비스를 제공하기 위하여 필요한 기술인 압축/복원, 전송 방식, 비디오 서버, Settop Box 등에 관하여 기술하였으며, 마지막으로 VOD 서비스 제공 예를 보였다.

Design and Performance Evaluation of Software RAID for Video-on-Demand Servers (주문형 비디오 서버를 위한 소프트웨어 RAID의 설계 및 성능 분석)

  • Software RAID(Redundant Arrays of Inexpensive Disks) is defined as a storage system that provides capabilities of hardware RAID, and guarantees high reliability as well as high performance. In this paper, we propose an enhanced disk scheduling algorithm and a scheme to guarantee reliability of data. We also design and implement software RAID by utilizing these mechanism to develop a storage system for multimedia applications. Because the proposed algorithm improves a defect of traditional GSS algorithm that disk I/O requests arc served in a fixed order, it minimizes buffer consumption and reduces the number of deadline miss through service group exchange. Software RAID also alleviates data copy overhead during disk services by sharing kernel memory. Even though the implemented software RAID uses the parity approach to guarantee reliability of data, it adopts different data allocation scheme. Therefore, we reduce disk accesses in logical XOR operations to compute the new parity data on all write operations. In the performance evaluation experiments, we found that if we apply the proposed schemes to implement the Software RAID, it can be used as a storage system for small-sized video-on-demand servers.

myEvalSVC: an Integrated Simulation Framework for Evaluation of H.264/SVC Transmission

  • The ever-increasing demand for H.264 scalable video coding (H.264/SVC) distribution motivates researchers to devise ways to enhance the quality of video delivered on the Internet. Furthermore, researchers and practitioners in general depend on computer simulators to analyze or evaluate their designed network architecture or proposed protocols. Therefore, a complete toolset, which is called myEvalSVC, for evaluating the delivered quality of H.264/SVC transmissions in a simulated environment is proposed to help the network and video coding research communities. The toolset is based on the H.264 Scalable Video coding streaming Evaluation Framework (SVEF) and extended to connect to the NS2 simulator. With this combination, people who work on video coding can simulate the effects of a more realistic network on video sequences resulting from their coding schemes, while people who work on network technology can evaluate the impact of real video streams on the proposed network architecture or protocols. To demonstrate the usefulness of the proposed new toolset, examples of H.264/SVC transmissions over 802.11 and 802.11e are provided.

  • Real time multimedia data services have been made possible by the rapid development of the computer and internet technology. Based on the technology, Many multimedia system developer try to use VOD(Video on Demand) and GVA technologies for distance education. However the system has mainly been developed to provide the video screen of good quality in real time and to compose contents efficiently. Not many researches and developments have been made for providing the users that is taking distance education with various types of service using VOD and GVA. Therefore In this paper we have designed and implemented an active on-demand multimedia service system to improve user-side service quality in distance education using VOD and GVA service. The on-demand multimedia service system can prominently help users to save the time and effort to search and select the studying data by this paper enables off-line search functions through E-mail and periodical current awareness service supported by PUSH technology, user oriented information booking supported by SDI service and feedback service.

  • In this paper, a VOD(Video -on-Demand) system is implemented using LAN(Local Area Network). The use of LAN causes the time-delay problem due to its narrow channel limitation, as a result, the service using the conventional LAN used not to be popular. In this paper, to solve these problems, we develop the modified topology, the selection methodology of the network equipment, and the dedicated(improved) protocol. Consequently, we can serve at most 3 or 4 clients at the same time, and we conclude it is necessary to optimize the network buffer size depending on the size of video data.

  • Peer-to-Peer (P2P) network has great potential on utilizing the network while reducing the server loads. Video on Demand (VoD) has become widely used since we can watch contents we like without having to download the overall file first. The mobile users may not need high quality of video; they only need good enough quality that can be played in the limited resource of physical device and network. So does with the devices with very limited network bandwidth. These issues emerge an idea of allowing Free-Rider in the P2P VoD system, where those low performance devices will only optimize the network utilization, affecting none to the performance of main system.

Determination of Reserved Channel Capacity for Popular Videos in Video-on-Demand Systems (주문형 비디오 시스템에서 인기 비디오를 위한 예약 채널 용량의 결정)

  • Video-on-Demand (VOD) service needs high resource consumption because of high bandwidth and long playback duration which are characteristics of multimedia. Various techniques such as Patching and Channel-Reserving Patching have been proposed to reduce the demand on the network-I/O bandwidth. Patching allows new clients to join an existing multicast for realization of true VOD, and Channel-Reserving Patching reserves the part of total channel capacity of video server in order to serve the requests for popular videos on which requests of users concentrate. To improve the performance of Channel-Reserving Patching, we propose the method that determines the reserved channel capacity of video server for the popular videos in this paper. The performance of our method is evaluated in terms of average servile latency, defection ratio and fairness through simulation, and is compared with those of Patching and another Channel-Reserving Patching.
