  • Motion-compensated frame interpolation (MCFI) techniques in video signal processing have many application areas. Frame rate up-conversion (FRUC) or distributed video coding (DVC) technique needs an effective MCFI algorithm. For these applications, it is necessary to develop an effective post-processing technique to improve visual qualities or to reduce virtual channel noises, resulting in the reduced channel bit rate. This paper proposes a reliability evaluation method based on spatio-temporal characteristics for motion-compensated interpolated blocks. The proposed algorithm investigates the temporal matching characteristics for current frame and then is designed in such a way that it can measure temporal characteristics as well as the spatial ones. Through computer simulations, it is shown that the proposed method outperforms the conventional temporal matching method.

  • This paper presents a new method for an efficient coding of very low bit-rate color video based on adaptive wavelet transform. Our approach reveals that the coding process works more efficiently if the quantized wavelet coefficients are preprocessed by a mechanism exploiting the redundancies in the wavelet subband structure. Thus, we focuses optimized activity of coding part, and exhaustive overlapped block motion compensation is utilized to ensure coherency in motion compensated error frames, and raised cosine window is applied. The horizontal and vertical components of motion vectors are encoded separately using adaptive arithmetic coding while significant wavelet coefficients are encoded in bit-plane order using adaptive arithmetic coding. On average the proposed codec exceeds H.263 and ZTE in peak signal-to-noise ratio by as much as 2.07 and 1.38dB at 28 kbits, respectively. Fore entire sequence coding, 3DWCVC method is superior to H.263 and ZTE by 0.35 and 0.71dB on average, respectively.

  • Recently, as the demand for immersive videos increases, efficient video processing techniques for omnidirectional immersive video is actively developed by MPEG-I. While the omnidirectional video provides a larger degree of freedom for a free viewpoint, the size of the video increases significantly. Furthermore, in order to compress 6 degree-of-freedom (6 DoF) videos that support motion parallax, it is required to develop a codec to yield better coding efficiency. In this paper, we develop a 6 DoF codec using Versatile Video Coding (VVC) as the next generation video coding standard. To the authors' best knowledge, this is the first VVC-based 6 DoF video codec toward the future ISO/IEC 23090 Part 7 (Metadata for Immersive Media (Video)) MPEG-I standardization. The experiments were conducted on the seven test video sequences specified in Common Test Condition (CTC) in two operation modes of TMIV (Test Model for Immersive Media) software. It is demonstrated that the proposed codec improves coding performance around 33.8% BD-rate reduction in the MIV (Metadata for Immersive Video) mode and 30.2% BD-rate reduction in the MIV view mode as compared to the state-of-the-art TMIV reference software. We also show the performance comparisons using Immersive Video PSNR (IV-PSNR) and Mean Structural Similarity (MSSIM).

  • The MPEG-2 source coding algorithm is very sensitive to transmission errors due to using of variable-length coding. When the compressed data are transmitted, transmission errors are generated and error correction scheme is not able to be corrected well them. In the decoder error concealment (EC) techniques must be used to conceal errors and it is able to minimize degradation of video quality. The proposed algorithm is method to conceal successive macroblock errors of I-frame and utilize temporal information of B-frame and spatial information of P-frame In the previous GOP which is temporally the nearest location to I-frame. This method can improve motion distortion and blurring by temporal and spatial errors which cause at existing error concealment techniques. In network where the violent transmission errors occur, we can conceal more efficiently severe slice errors. This algorithm is Peformed in MPEG-2 video codec and Prove that we can conceal efficiently slice errors of I-frame compared with other approaches by simulations.

  • A face detection plays an important role in face recognition, video surveillance, and human computer interaction. In this paper, we propose a progressive threshold method to detect human faces in real time. The consecutive face images are acquired from camera and transformed into YCbCr color space images. The skin color of the input images are separated using a skin color filter in the YCbCr color space and some candidated face areas are decided by connected component analysis. The intensity equalization is performed to avoid the effect of many circumstances and an arbitrary threshold value is applied to get binary images. The eye area can be detected because the area is clearly distinguished from others in the binary image progressive threshold method searches for an optimal eye area by progressively increasing threshold from low values. After progressive thresholding, the eye area is normalized and verified by back propagation algorithm to finalize the face detection.

  • In the recent mobile communication systems, the performance of Turbo Code using the error correction coding depends on the interleaver influencing the free distance determination and the recursive decoding algorithms that is executed in the turbo decoder. However, performance depends on the interleaver depth that need a large time delay over the reception process. Moreover, Turbo Code has been known as the robust ending method with the confidence over the fading channel. The International Telecommunication Union(ITU) has recently adopted as the standardization of the channel coding over the third generation mobile communications such as IMT-2000. Therefore, in this paper, we proposed of the method to improve the conventional performance with the parallel concatenated 4-New Turbo Decoder using MAP a1gorithm in spite of complexity increasement. In the real-time video and video service over the third generation mobile communications, the performance of the proposed method was analyzed by the reduced decoding delay using the variable decoding method by computer simulation over AWGN and fading channels.

  • Vehicle black boxes that have similar functions as airplane black boxes are currently being used due to the loss of many lives and properties arising from vehicle accidents. Both black-box products and Event Data Recorder(EDR) systems are currently available in the market. Most of the existing in-vehicle black boxes, however, record only external videos and images and cannot show the vehicle's driving status, whereas EDR products record only the driving status and not external videos. To address the problem of black boxes that can record only videos and images and that of EDR systems that can record only driving data, an integrated vehicle state and video recording system that uses MOST(Media-oriented System Transport) and OBD-II(Onboard Diagnostics II) and CAM (camera) and GPS (global positioning system).

  • This paper describes an efficient algorithm for shot boundary detection in MPEG video stream. There are two types of shot boundary: abrupt and gradual. The proposed algorithm for detecting the abrupt shot boundaries used DCT DC value in compressed domain. The proposed algorithm of the gradual change detection consists of two-pass mechanism. In the first pass, the expected positions of shot boundaries are extracted using ratio value of motion vectors. After decoding frames that are extracted in the first pass, we will make the dissolving image using (n)th and (n+2)th image of expected position. The gradual shot boundaries are selected by similarity of the dissolving image and the image of (n+1)th expected position. As applying the algorithm for detecting shot boundaries, the gradual changes as well as the abrupt changes are detected efficiently. Experimental results indicate that the proposed method is computationally fast for detecting shot boundaries and robust to the variation of the video characteristic that is different for the kind of videos.

  • Tremendous computation of full search or lossless motion estimation algorithms for video coding has led development of many fast motion estimation algorithms. We still need proper control of computation and prediction quality. In the paper, we suggest an algorithm that reduces computation effectively and controls computational amount and prediction quality, while keeping prediction quality as almost the same as that of the full search. The proposed algorithm uses multiple thresholds for partial block sum and times of counting unchanged minimum position for each step. It also calculates the partial block matching error, removes impossible candidates early, implements fast motion estimation by comparing times of keeping the position of minimum error for each step, and controls prediction quality and computation easily by adjusting the thresholds. The proposed algorithm can be combined with conventional fast motion estimation algorithms as well as by itself, further reduce computation while keeping the prediction quality as almost same as the algorithms, and prove it in the experimental results.

  • In this paper, a real-time vehicle detection and tracking algorithms is proposed. The vehicle detection could be processed using GMM (Gaussian Mixture Model) algorithm and mathematical morphological processing with HD CCTV camera images. The vehicle tracking based on separated vehicle object was performed using Euclidean distance between detected object. In more detail, background could be estimated using GMM from CCTV input image signal and then object could be separated from difference image of the input image and background image. At the next stage, candidated objects were reformed by using mathematical morphological processing. Finally, vehicle object could be detected using vehicle size informations dependent on distance and vehicle type in tunnel. The vehicle tracking performed using Euclidean distance between the objects in the video frames. Through computer simulation using recoded real video signal in tunnel, it is shown that the proposed system works well.
