  • Most video coding systems use YCbCr color space for their inputs, but RGB space is more preferred in the field of high fidelity video because the compression gain from YCbCr becomes disappeared in the high quality operation region. In order to improve the coding performance of RGB video signal, this paper presents an adaptive frequency-selective weighted prediction algorithm. Based on the sign agreement and the strength of frequency-domain correlation of residual color planes, the proposed scheme adaptively selects the frequency elements as well as the corresponding prediction weights for better utilization of inter-plane correlation of RGB signal. Experimental results showed that the proposed algorithm improves the coding gain of around 13% bitrate reduction, on average, compared to the common mode of 4:4:4 video coding in the state-of-the-art video compression standard, H.264/AVC.

  • In this paper, we present a novel video fingerprinting implementation method to identify the source of illegal copies. The video fingerprinting is achieved by the insertion of uniform distributed random number is made by seller and buyer's identification key-in the video wavelet coefficients by their temporal wavelet transform. The proposed fingerprinting is able to detect unique fingerprint of video contents even if they have been distorted by collusion attacks and MPEG2 compression. Especially, we use characteristics of the temporal wavelet transform to assign user's embedding area. Experimental results show the traceability of unauthorized distribution of video contents and its robustness to various collusion attacks and MPEG2 compression.

  • In this paper, we propose the novel methodology to improve the rate-distortion characteristics by the difference of the quantized DCT coefficients using two different quantized parameters in HEVC. Under the special condition of the quantization property in HEVC, we evaluate the binary difference of the quantized DCT coefficients derived from two different quantized parameters and compressed it with simple CABAC algorithm based on the characteristics of the binary difference. The experimental result shows that the proposed algorithm improves the compression performance of the rate-distortion property in comparison to the conventional HEVC compression method.

  • In this paper, we propose efficient rate control algorithm for video near-lossless compression. The proposed method adjusts pixel error range using amounts of previous encoded bits and target bits at a slice encoding interval. Thus, encoded bits by the proposed method are transmitted well through limited bandwidth without overflow. Also, target bits and encoded bits can be controlled according to transmission policy. Experimental results show that our proposed method not only almost fits compression ratio, but also has better image quality.

  • We present a hybrid hardware architecture capable of encoding and decoding a full HD resolution video with 60 fps. A number of technical modifications are applied to an existing image compression algorithm not only to accommodate large videos at a high frame rate but to enhance the quality of synthetic images, such as characters and video game images. Image quality of the proposed algorithm at a 1/6 compression ratio was comparable to that of the BTC based 1/3 compression algorithm.

  • As realistic media are widespread in various image processing areas, image or video compression is one of the key technologies to enable real-time applications with limited network bandwidth. Generally, image or video compression cause the unnecessary compression artifacts, such as blocking artifacts and ringing effects. In this study, we propose a Deep Residual Channel-attention Network, so called DRCAN, which consists of an input layer, a feature extractor and an output layer. Experimental results showed that the proposed DRCAN can reduced the total memory size and the inference time by as low as 47% and 59%, respectively. In addition, DRCAN can achieve a better peak signal-to-noise ratio and structural similarity index measure for compressed images compared to the previous methods.

  • The purpose of this study is to design and simulate Reed Solomon encoder(255,223) in PCM/FM communication system in order to transmit the KSLV-I onboard video data. Especially in the compressed video data transmission applications, the communication system is required to have a very low BER performance because of interframe or interframe compression techniques. We have used the primitive polynomial of CCSDS standard and calculated the various coefficients and then the encoder have been simulated as a part of RF interface FPGA hardware in a video compression unit.

  • In this paper, we present a motion compensated video compression method based on both block and object motions. A simplified objectoriented motion parameter is estimated from the block based motion vectors. A decision rule for the global or local MCP modes is established. Simulation results show that the proposed method has lower bit-rates than the BMA based method at the same reconstruction errors.

  • High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) is the newest video coding standard for improvement in video data compression. This new standard provides a significant improvement in picture quality, especially for high-resolution videos. A quadtree-based structure is created for the encoding and decoding processes and the rate-distortion (RD) cost is calculated for all possible dimensions of coding units in the quadtree. To get the best combination of the block an optimization process is performed in the encoder, called rate distortion optimization (RDO). In this work we are proposing a novel approach to enhance the overall RDO process of HEVC encoder. The proposed algorithm is performed in two steps. In the first step, like HEVC, it performs general rate distortion optimization. The second step is an extra checking where a SSIM based cost is evaluated. Moreover, a fast SSIM (FSSIM) calculation technique is also proposed in this paper.

  • In the H.264 video coding standard, the information for the macroblock is encoded by the independent syntax elements, called RUN and MB_type. Through the experimental observation for various test sequences, it is shown that the performance of the video coding is improved by using the combined RUN and MB_type as an entity. Based on this fact, we propose an unified new syntax element composed of the RUN and MB_type in order to improve the compression ratio of H.264 video coding. In the proposed syntax element, an EOF(End-Of-Frame) symbol indicating the end of picture is used for enhancing the performance of video coding. The simulation result shows that the proposed method outperforms maximally 15 % to the conventional method for the bitrate of the macroblock.
