There are channel errors when video data are transmitted between encoder and decoder. These channel errors would make decoded image incorrect, so it is very important to detect and recover channel errors. This paper proposes a method of error detection and recovery by hiding specific information into video bitstream using fragile watermark and checking it later. The proposed method requires no additional bits into compressed bitstream since it embeds a user-specific data pattern in the least significant bits of LEVELs in VLC codewords. The decoder can extract the information to check whether the received bitstream has an error or not. We also propose to use this method to embed essential data such as motion vectors that can be used for error recovery. The proposed method can detect corrupted MBs that usually escape the conventional syntax-based error detection scheme. This proposed method is quite simple and of low complexity. So the method can be applied to multimedia communication system in low bitrate wireless channel.

After the efficiency of H.264 video compression has been announced, it replaced MPEG-2 standard in several applications. So transcoding methods of MPEG-2 to H.264 have been studying because there are variety devices and contents followed by MPEG-2. Although H.264 supported various service such as IPTV, DMB, digital broadcasting etc, but users using MPEG-2 devices cannot accessible to them. This paper propose H.264 to MPEG-2 transcoding for users of MPEG-2 devices without displacement H.264. The proposed method predicted a motion vector for MPEG-2 encoder after it extracted from motion vectors of variable blocks in H.264 to improve processing time. Also it predicted a optimal motion vector using modified boundary matching algorithm after grasped a special character for boundary and background of object. The experimental results from proposed method show a considerable reduction in processing time, as much as 65% averagely, with a small objective quality reduction in PSNR.

This paper presents a new model-based macroblock layer rate control algorithm for low bit rate video coding which generates output bits corresponding to a target bit budget. The H.264 standard uses various coding modes and optimization methods to improve the compression performance, which makes it difficult to control the generated traffic accurately in low bit rate environments. In the proposed scheme, we first estimate MAD values of macroblocks in a frame and define a target remaining bits using the estimated MAD values before encoding each macroblock. If a difference between the target value and the actual value is greater than a threshold value, the quantization parameter is adjusted to decrease the difference. It is shown by experimental results that the new algorithm can obtain more than 66% decrease of the difference between the target bits and the resulting bits for a frame with the PSNR performance better than that of the existing rate control algorithm.

The first frame of a GOP is encoded in intra mode which generates a larger number of bits. In addition, the first frame is used for the inter mode encoding of the following frames. Thus the intial QP for the first frame affects the first frame as well as the following frames. Traditionally, the initial QP is determined among four constant values only depending on the bpp. Although this initialization scheme is simple, yet it is not accurate enough. An accurate intial QP prediction scheme should not only depends on bpp but also on the complexity of the video sequence and the output bandwidth. In this paper, we propose a traffic model for finding the optimal initial QP which maximizes the PSNR of the GOP. We also propose a method to find model parameters for real-time video encoding. It is shown by experimental results that the proposed traffic model captures initial QP characteristics effectively and the proposed method for model parameters accurately estimates the real values.

Smart Camera provides intelligent vision functionalities which can interpret captured video, extract context-aware information and execute a necessary action in real-timeliness in addition to the functionality of network cameras which transmit the compressed acquired videos through networks. Intelligent vision algorithms demand tremendous computations so that real-time processing of computation of intelligent vision algorithms as well as compression and transmission of videos simultaneously is too much burden for a single CPU. Davinci processor of Texas Instruments is a popular ASSP(Application Specific Standard Product) which has dual core architecture of ARM core and DSP core and provides various I/O interfaces as well as networking interface and video acquiring interface necessary for developing digital video embedded applications. In this paper, we report the results of designing and implementing S/W for Davinci-based smart camera. We implement a face detection as an example of vision application and verify the implementation works well. In the future, for the development of a smart camera with more broad and real-time vision functionalities, it is necessary to study about more efficient vision application S/W architecture and optimization of vision algorithms on DSP core of Davichi processor.
The purpose of the paper is to enable a format transcoding between a heterogeneous compression format in a real time, and to enhance the compression ratio using characteristics of the compressed frame. In this paper, for the heterogeneous format transcoding, we tried to transcode from MPEG2 having a lower compression ratio to H.263 having a higher compression ratio. After analyzing MPEG 2 bit stream and H.263 bit stream of the same original video, we found that the number of intra coded macro blocks in MPEG 2 data is much higher than the number of the intra coded macro blocks in H.263 data. In the process of P frame generation, a intra coded macro block is generated when a motion estimation value representing the similarity between the previous frame and current frame does not meet a threshold. Especially the intra coded macro block has a great impact on the compression ratio. Hence the paper, we tried to minimize the number of intra coded macro blocks in H.263 data stream which is transcoded from MPEG 2 in a compressed domain. For the purpose, we propose a guided search method for transcoding the INTRA coded block into INTER coded block using the information about motion vectors surrounding the intra macro block in order to minimize the complexity of the motion estimation process. The experimental results show that the transcoding of MPEG 2 into H.263 can be done in a real time successfully.

Recently, we need to dramatically speed up real-time video encoding and decoding on mobile devices because complexity of video CODEC is significantly increasing along with the demand for multimedia service of high-quality and high-definition videos by users. A variety of research is conducted for parallelism of video processing using newly developed multi-core platforms. In this paper, we propose a method of parallelism based on slice partition of video compression CODEC. We propose a novel concept of a parallel slice for parallelism and propose a new coding order to be adequate to the parallel slice which keeps high coding efficiency. To minimize synchronization time of multiple parallel slices, we also propose a synchronization method to determinate whether the parallel slice could be independently decoded or not. Experimental results shows that we achieved 27.5% (40.7%) speed-up by parallelism with bit-rate increase of 3.4% (2.7%) for CIF sequences (720p sequences) by implementing the proposed algorithm on the H.264/AVC.
This paper proposes a method for efficient lossless depth map coding for MPEG 3D-Video coding. In general, the conventional video coding method such as H.264 has been used for depth map coding. However, the conventional video coding methods do not consider the image characteristics of the depth map. Therefore, as a lossless depth map coding method, this paper proposes a bit-plane based lossless depth mar coding method by using the MPEG-4 Part 2 shape coding scheme. Simulation results show that the proposed method achieves the compression ratios of 28.91:1. In intra-only coding, proposed method reduces the bitrate by 24.84% in comparison with the JPEG-LS scheme, by 39.35% in comparison with the JPEG-2000 scheme, by 30.30% in comparison with the H.264(CAVLC mode) scheme, and by 16.65% in comparison with the H.264(CABAC mode) scheme. In addition, in intra and inter coding the proposed method reduces the bitrate by 36.22% in comparison with the H.264(CAVLC mode) scheme, and by 23.71% in comparison with the 0.264(CABAC mode) scheme.
Because of the different shooting position between multi-view cameras and the imperfect camera calibration, Illumination mismatches of multi-view video can happen. This variation can bring about the performance decrease of multi-view video coding(MVC) algorithm. A histogram matching algorithm can be applied to recompensate these inconsistencies in a prefiltering step. Once all camera frames of a multi-view sequence are adjusted to a predefined reference through the histogram matching, the coding efficiency of MVC is improved. However the histogram distribution can be different not only between neighboring views but also between sequential views on account of movements of camera angle and some objects, especially human. Therefore the histogram matching algorithm which references all frames in chose view is not appropriate for compensating the illumination differences of these sequence. Thus we propose new algorithms both the image classification algorithm which is applied two criteria to improve the correlation between inter-view frames and the histogram matching which references and matches with a group of pictures(GOP) as a unit to advance the correlation between successive frames. Experimental results show that the compression ratio for the proposed algorithm is improved comparing with the conventional algorithms.

The translation and the rotation of camera occur global motion which affects all over the frame in video sequence. With the video sequences containing global motion, it is practically impossible to extract exact video objects and to calculate genuine object motions. Therefore, high compression ratio cannot be achieved due to the large motion vectors. This problem can be solved when the global motion compensated frames are used. The existing camera motion estimation methods for global motion compensation have a large amount of computations in common. In this paper, we propose a simple global motion estimation algorithm that consists of linear equations without any repetition. The algorithm uses information .of symmetric points in the frame of the video sequence. The discriminant conditions to distinguish regions belonging to distant view from foreground in the frame are presented. Only for the distant view satisfying the discriminant conditions, the linear equations for the panning, tilting, and zooming parameters are applied. From the experimental results using the MPEG test sequences, we can confirm that the proposed algorithm estimates correct global motion parameters. Moreover the real-time capability of the proposed technique can be applicable to many MPEG-4 and MPEG-7 related areas.
