  • The present study aims to investigate the shimmy stability behavior of a single wheeled nose landing gear system. The system is supposed to be equipped with an electromechanical actuator capable to control the shimmy vibrations. A Proportional-Integrative-Derivative (PID) controller, tuned by using the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) procedure, is here proposed to actively damp the shimmy vibration. Time-history results for some test cases are reported and commented. Stochastic analysis is last presented to assess the robustness of the control system.

  • This paper is concerned with the design and implementation of magnetic damper system to reduce the vibration of suspension system actively. Cylindrical type electro-magnetic actuator with permanent magnet is analyzed and effective controller design is made. Magnetic force analyzed and transfer function for the total system is determined by experimental data using error minimization method. For experiments, simple suspension structure system is utilized, in which a magnetic damper composed of permanent magnet and digital controller is attached. In order to drive the system, bipolar power amplifier of voltage control type is utilized. Stable and high speed control board is used to perform digital control logic for the given system. This paper shows that the magnetic damper system using phase-lead controller excellently reduces vibration of 1-D.O.F (degree of freedom) suspension system.

  • The composite materials may be exposed to environmental (thermal or hygral or both) condition during their service life. The effect of environmental condition is usually adverse from the point of view of design of composite structures. In the present research study the effect of hygrothermal condition on the design of laminated composite structures is investigated. The active fiber composite (AFC) which may be utilized as actuator or sensor is considered in the present analysis. The sensor layer is used to sense the level of response of the composite structures. The sensed voltage is fed back to the actuator through the controller. In this study both displacement and velocity feedback controllers are employed to reduce the response of the composite laminate within acceptable limit. The Newmark direct time integration scheme is employed along with modal superposition method to improve the computational efficiency. It is observed from the numerical study that the laminated composite structures become weak in the presence of hygrothermal load. The response of the structure can be brought to the acceptable level once the AFC layer is activated through the feedback loop.

  • Many analytical and experimental studies on the active suppression of nonlinear panel flutter by using piezoceramic patch have been carried out. However, these active control methods have a few important problems; a large amount of power is required to operate actuators, and additional apparatuses such as sensor systems and controller are needed. In this study passive suppression schemes for nonlinear flutter of composite panel, which is believed to be more robust suppression system than active control in practical operation, are proposed by using piezoelectric inductor-resistor series shunt circuit. Toward the end, a finite element equation of motion for an electromechanically coupled system is proposed using the Hamilton's principle. To achieve the best damping effect, optimal shape and location of the piezoceramic(PZT) patches are determined by using genetic algorithms. The results clearly demonstrate that the passive damping scheme by using piezoelectric shunt circuit can effectively attenuate the flutter.

  • In this study, flow characteristics of the FPN (Fountain Pen Nano-Lithography) using active membrane pumping are investigated. This FPN has integrated chamber, micro channel, and high capacity reservoir for continuous ink feed. The most important aspect in this probe provided control of fluid injection using active membrane pumping in chamber. The flow rates in channel by capillary force are theoretically analyzed, including the control of mass flow rates by deflection of membrane. The above results are compared with numerical simulations that calculated by commercial code, FLUENT. The velocity of fluid in micro channel shows linear behaviors. And the mass flows are proportional to the second order function of pumping pressure that is imposed to membrane.

  • As the railway becomes higher, the reliable stability and riding comfort of higher railway are required. To improve the riding comfort of high-speed trains, it is very helpful to use active suspension system for railway. In Japan, the high-speed train, Shinkansen has adopted semi-active suspension system and now it is running in the main trunk. In this paper, the authors introduce several technical trends of vibration control methods of Japanese Shinkansen. And the installation of semi-active suspension to HSR 350x and the test result of test run on the Kyoung-Bu high speed ling are also explained. After development of HSR 350x, new R&D national project of high speed train is progressed by Ministry of Land, Transport, and Maritime Affairs. This project is the development of Electric Multiple Unit of high speed train with 400km/h of maximum test speed. These result would be helpful to progress next generation high speed project.

  • In this paper, a tile projector was developed for the control of low-frequency underwater echoes. The projector was designed to cover a wide area such as the hull of a submarine, and to have a relatively thin thickness. As a preliminary work for active echo control, the performance of the projector was measured in an anechoic water tank. The transmitting voltage response as well as the passive echo reduction were measured to evaluate the performance as an underwater projector.

  • This paper is concerned with the dynamic modeling and controller design for a cylindrical shell equipped with MFC actuators. The dynamic model was derived by using Rayleigh-Ritz method based on Donnel-Mushtari shell theory. The actuator and sensors for the MFC actuator equations were derived based on pin-force model. The boundary conditions at both ends were assumed to be shear diaphragm. After calculating the natural vibration characteristics, the positive position feedback controller was designed to cope with the first two modes. To this end, the equations of motion were reduced to modal equations of motion by considering the modes of interest. The theoretical results show that vibrations can be successfully suppressed.

  • This paper deals with a uniform cantilever Euler-Bernoulli beam subjected to follower and transversal force at its free end as a model for a pipe conveying fluid under electromagnetic damper force. The electromagnetic damper is composed of a permanent-magnet DC motor, a ball screw and a nut. The main objective of the current work is to reduce the pipe vibration resulting from the fluid velocity and allow it to transform into electric energy. To pursue this goal, the stability and vibration of the beam model was studied using Ritz and Newmark methods. It was observed that increasing the fluid velocity results in a decrease in the motion of the free end of the pipe. The results of simulation showed that the designed semiactive electromagnetic damper controlled by on-off damping control strategy decreased the vibration amplitude of the pipe about 5.9% and regenerated energy nearly 1.9 (mJ/s). It was also revealed that the designed semi-active electromagnetic damper has better performance and more energy regeneration than the passive electromagnetic damper.
