  • This paper presents the utilization of waste concrete as vertical drain material. The materials used as vertical drain material were the waste concrete, obtained from the demolished apartments or concrete structure and sand. In this study, laboratory model test was performed to investigate settlement and bearing capacity between sand compaction pile and waste concrete compaction pile. The results of laboratory model test showed that the improvement efficiency of soft ground by waste concrete compaction pile was better than sand compaction pile.

  • In the vertical drain method, discharge capacity is generally one of the most important factor which affect on the estimation of the drain efficiency. However, adopting the drain considering discharge capacity only is not sufficiently considered method so that systematic criteria for adoption is necessary to choose the most suitable drain. Therefore, this study represents the application method considering behavior of the ground and vertical drain which is coupled together and ground improvement efficiency analyzing various cases of discharge capacity test performed in the recent soft ground improvement projects. According to the analysis, most drains tend to satisfy the required discharge capacity. It presents that deformed shape of the drains and well resistance estimation along the ground settlement, improvement efficiency by water content ratio along the depth and shear strength obtained after ground improvement should be considered altogether with the discharge capacity to select the proper drain. Also, appropriate adoption of drain material considering the ground condition is vital through analyzing the field measured data and comparing the result of the discharge capacity test as various vertical drain materials are being constructed continuously.

  • Vertical drains have been commonly used to increase the rate of the consolidation of dredged material. The installation of vertical drains additionally provides a radial flow path in the dredged foundation. The objective of this study develops a numerical model for 2-D axisymmetric non-linear finite strain consolidation considering self-weight consolidation to predict the effect of vertical drain in dredged foundation which is in process of self-weight consolidation. The non-linear relationship between the void ratio and effective stress and permeability during consolidation are taken into account in the numerical model. The results of the numerical analysis are compared with that of the self-weight consolidation test in which an artificial vertical drain is installed. In addition, the numerical model developed in this paper is the simplified analytical method proposed by Ahn et, al (2010). The comparisons show that the developed numerical model can properly simulate the consolidation of the dredged material with the vertical drains installed.

  • Sand drain as a vertical drainage is widely used in soft ground improvement. Recently, sand, the principal source of sand drain, is running out. A laboratory model test was carried out to utilize gravel as a substitute for sand. Though which the characteristics of gravel are compared to those of sand for engineering purpose. According to the test, the settlement was found to be smaller in gravel drain than in sand drain. The increase in bearing capacity by gravel rile explains the result. The clogging effect was not found in gravel column. As a result, it is assumed that gravel is relatively acceptable as a drainage material. Gravel material seems better than sand material in bearing capacity and it is found that bearing capacity is larger when gravel is used as compaction pile than as drain from in-situ test on bearing capacity. Increase of bearing capacity with gravel pile means an effect of composite ground by stiffness of gravel material. It can lie supposed to use gravel pile instead of sand pile in view of consolidation effect and bearing capacity.

  • Soft foundation is extensively distributed in coastal areas including our local regions. Embankment load on such soft foundation causes displacement due to lack of base ground supports. Long-term consolidation can result in settlement and destruction of shear failure and structure. Therefore, a variety of vertical drain methods are applied to construction sites to prevent base from breaking and changing for secure construction. This study analyzed the patterns of changes displacement to determine efficient range of improvement since range of vertical drain material determines vertical and horizontal changes based on the width range of under ground improvement. Changes of intensity with distance from embankment edge were also analyzed in the field study of embankment slope.

  • Sand drain as a vertical drainage is widely used in soft ground improvement. Recently, sand, the principal source of sand drain, is running out. The in-situ tests were carried out to utilize gravel as a substitute for sand. In-situ tests area was divided into two areas by material used. One is Sand Drain(SD) and Sand Compaction Pile(SCP) area, the other is Gravel Drain(GD) and Gravel Compaction Pile(GCP) area. Both areas were monitored to obtain the information on settlement, pore water pressure and bearing capacity by measuring instruments for stage loading caused by embankment. The results of measurements were analyzed, The clogging effect was checked at various depth in gravel column after the test. According to the test results, the settlement was found to be smaller in gravel drain than in sand drain. The increase in bearing capacity by gravel pile explains the result. The clogging effect was not found in gravel column. It is assumed that gravel is relatively acceptable as a drainage material. Gravel is considered to be a better material than sand for bearing capacity, and it is found that bearing capacity is larger when gravel is used as a gravel compaction pile than as a gravel drain.

  • This paper presents a study on the discharge capacity of geotextiles as a horizontal drain layer placed between the layers of earth fill and natural soft ground. Required discharge capacity of geotextiles as drain layers estimated by consolidation analysis is proportional to the consolidation coefficient of the ground soils and the width of the earth fills. The field discharge capacity of the geotextiles are measured by the hydraulic transmissivity test. And the results show wide variation according to the material characteristics of geotextiles, water content of the soils, vertical pressure, and etc. For the short horizontal drain length, geotextile filter mat can be used for the horizontal drain layer. And f3r the long drain($25{\sim}55m$), it is used for the drain together with Bord Drain.

  • Copper slag is the by-producted material on the proceeding of refining the copper. To verify applications of copper slag to vertical drain material can substitute for the sands in ground improvement, laboratory soil tests and consolidation model tests were conducted. The results of consolidation model test was analyzed as the hyperbolic method. The hyperbolic method assumes that the settlement(s) versus time(t) behavior approaches a straight line describes a hyperbolic reaction. The inverse of the slope of the line would then yield the ultimate settlement. Through in this study, copper slag is compatible with vertical drain material as like sands. Copper slag compaction pile promote the consolidation settlement.

  • In this study, the full-scale laboratory model test on utilization of recycled aggregates and crushed stone as vertical drains to use an alternative material of sand in soft ground is performed. The settlement and pore water pressure were measured to evaluate the discharge capacity and filed application, and the results were compared and analyzed through the finite element method. The measured and estimated settlement in all vertical drain materials decreases gradually with the load increase. The measured settlement 6.55~8.63 mm, and the estimated by the Hyperbolic model was 7.45~7.92 mm. So the model used for the analysis can be applied to the settlement estimation of the actual field. The variations of pore water pressure with time showed constantly regardless of the load in all vertical drainage materials. The pore water pressure was similarity to that of sand after rapid drawdown. Therefore, it was applicable to the field because discharge capacity was enough to be an alternative material to the sand which had been being used as the vertical drains.
