  • Owing to the depletion of fossil energy, wind power is attracting attention as a promising environmentally friendly alternative energy source, because it is abundant, renewable, and non-polluting. Wind turbines are divided into horizontal axis wind turbines (HAWTs) and vertical axis wind turbines (VAWTs) according to the direction of the rotating shaft. VAWTs have a low power generation efficiency, but are not affected by the wind direction and, thus, no yaw system is required and their structure is simple. Small VAWTs are attracting much attention because they can generate power even at low wind speeds. In this study, the output voltages and output currents of small VAWTs with gyromill type, hinge type and double door type blades capable of generating power even at low wind speeds were analyzed at variable wind speeds in the range of 1~11 m/s. At the maximum wind speed of 11m/s, the application of the double door type blades achieved 67% and 9% higher wind turbine output voltages than that of the gyromill type and hinge type blades, respectively. As regards the wind turbine output currents, the application of the double door type blades gave rise to 93% and 5% higher results than that of the gyromill type and hinge type blades, respectively. Through this study, the excellent output characteristics and commercialization potential of the double door type blades, which can generate power both at low and high wind speeds, were confirmed.

  • The objective of this paper is to develop 360 W class wind turbine tree using a helical type wind turbine. The performance of 100 W class helical wind turbine which finished the conceptual design has been forecast through the CFD analysis. After performed the analysis of one wind turbine performance, four wind turbine have been installed at the structure of a tree type and then the change of a output data has been verified through the CFD analysis. In this study, the CFD results of a helical wind turbine tree have been shown by a velocity and pressure distribution. The result could obtain more than rated power 360 W through the CFD analysis.

  • Vibration issue of a building structure due to a wind turbine should be resolved for the application of building-augmented wind turbine. In this study, a dynamic analysis for an horizontal-axis upwind wind turbine is carried out to calculate vibration excited to an example building structure. Characteristics of vertical vibration transfer of the building structure are analytically studied and compared with a criteria. Then, a method to isolate the vibration is presented by analyzing the vibration characteristics of the wind turbine, and verified by applying to the building structure.

  • Vertical axis wind turbine, despite of its limit in power efficiency, the simplicity in structure and maintenance is a competitive factor that keeps this type of turbine in the game until nowadays. Continuous solutions have been given to handle its major weakness and the use of omni-directional guide vane is an considerable one. In this paper, a 5kkW scale Savonius-based wind turbine enhanced with such guide vane system was design and studied. Together with reasonable blade design, the wind turbine shows promising performance compared with basic design while maintaining its original advantages.

  • This study is to develop a system of electric power generation utilizing the wind resources available in the domestic wind environment. We tested drag-type vortical wind turbine models, which have two different types of blades: a flat plate and circular arc shape. Through a performance test, conditions of maximum rotational speed were found by measuring the rpm of wind turbine. The rotational speed was measured by a tachometer in a wind tunnel and the tunnel wind speed was by using a pilot-static tube and a micro manometer. The performance test for a prototype was accomplished by calculating power, power coefficient, torque coefficient from the measurement of torque and rpm by a dynamometer controller From the measurements for miniature turbine models with two different blades, the circular arc shape was found to Produce a maximum rotational speed for the same wind velocity condition. Based on this result, the prototype with the circular arc blade was made and tested. We found that it produces 500W at the wind velocity of 10.8 m/s and the power coefficient was 20%.

  • In this study, low noise designs of a Savonius wind turbines are numerically investigated. From a previous study, it was found that the high harmonic components whose fundamental frequency is higher than the BPF were found to be dominant in noise spectrum of a Savonius wind turbine. On a basis of this observation, S-shaped blade tip is proposed as a low design factors that decrease wind turbine noise by inducing phase differences in vortex shedding. The conventional Savonius and S-shaped turbines are investigated using Hybrid CAA method where flow field around the turbine are computed using CFD techniques and the radiated noise are predicted by applying acoustic analogy to the computed flow data. Noise reductions by these design factors are confirmed by comparing the predicted noise levels from these turbines.

  • Recently, the wind energy has been widely used as a renewable energy resource due to lack and environmental issues of the mostly used fossil fuel. This work is to develop a 500W class blade design of vertical axis wind turbine system which will be applicable to relatively low speed region like Korea and for the domestic use. For this wind turbine a high efficiency and low noise turbine blade was designed with the proposing aerodynamic design procedure, and a light composite structure blade. Structural analyses were performed using the Finite Element Method and fatigue life of the designed blade is estimated. Finally, in order to check its performance, the manufactured blade was tested by using truck and the results of test was good with respect to its analysis result.

  • Performances of 3 different aerodynamic analytical models, single multiple and double multiple stream tube, for vertical axis Darrieus turbine were analyzed comparatively. From the study it has been found that the models derived from stream tube assumptions can be useful for simple prediction of basic design characteristics of Darrieus turbine. But, for a large tip speed and solidity ratios, the models has shown a certain limit in its applicability according to the formulation scheme applied. The results have shown that for the case having large tip speed and solidity ratios the consideration due to stream conditions, such as trailing vortices or wakes, should be included for accurate prediction of the aerodynamic performances of Darrieus turbine.
