Assumed strain finite strip method using the non-periodic B-spline

  • An assumed strain finite strip method(FSM) using the non-periodic B-spline for a shell is presented. In the present method, the shape function based on the non-periodic B-splines satisfies the Kronecker delta properties at the boundaries and allows to introduce interior supports in much the same way as in a conventional finite element formulation. In the formulation for a shell, the geometry of the shell is defined by non-periodic B3-splines without any tangential vectors at the ends and the penalty function method is used to incorporate the drilling degrees of freedom. In this study, new assumed strain fields using the non-periodic B-spline function are proposed to overcome the locking problems. The strip formulated in this way does not posses any spurious zero energy modes. The versatility and accuracy of the new approach are demonstrated through a series of numerical examples.

  • Korea Astronomy Observatory (KAO) recently developed a new model of CCD imaging system for astronomical purpose. This paper presents system structure and electrical circuit descriptions with the performance of the CCD imaging system. The developed system can handle astronomical image acquisition with additional functions of on-chip binning, sub-image acquisition using a SITe $1024\times1024$ CCD chip. Particularly the controller design of the system allows us great flexibility and versatility with the software system control and it is possible to cope with any format CCDs by any manufactures, in principle. The system performances are derived by mean variance test in our laboratory, which shows that the total system noise 10.5e-(R.M.S), Gain 1.9e-/ ADD, non-linearity $0.37\%$

  • After many years of proliferation, the nuclear industry is indebted for a formidable consequence, the safe management of spent fuel. Naturally, the high radioactivity involved with such process motivates the development of effective telerobotic systems. Nevertheless, the existing master-slave type of tele manipulators are limited in effectiveness by the human operator's limited sensory and manipulation capabilities. This paper presents the result of a research effort to resolve such problems by assigning the slave manipulator a certain degree of intelligence; sensing and actuation. In the presented system, a perception-action loop is achieved using ultrasonic range sensor and laser distance sensor interfaced with the PUMA 760 industrial robot system, and applied to automating impact wrenching task for unbolting the lid of nuclear spent fuel cask. The perception-action loop performs determination of the cask location, collision avoidance and centering of the impact wrench onto the bolt head. To aid the insertion task and to provide versatility a mounting module consisting of an RCC device and an automatic tool changer is designed and implemented. The performance of the developed system is tested on the model cask and the result is given.

  • A versatile negative resistance using one transistor, one photo-coupler and three resisters, which can be used as either a voltage controlled or current controlled negative resistance, is designed. The versatility is obtained by changing the transistor and one connection of the circuit. The negative resistance region is linear and its value can be varied by varying one of the three resistor values.

Simultaneous Detection of Tartrazine-Sunset Yellow in Food Samples Using Bioxide/Carbon Paste Microcomposite with Lanthanum and Titanium

  • This report describes the simultaneous detection of the two dyes most commonly used in food, tartrazine (TZ) and sunset yellow (SY), based on a microcomposite of carbon paste decorated with La2O3 and TiO2. Anodic currents for SY-TZ were observed at 0.89-1.21 V by cyclic voltammetry (CV) separated with a ΔV of 0.32 V. The increased anodic peak currents compared to that of the unmodified carbon paste electrode were almost 50 and 41% for SY-TZ, respectively. The detection limits with the optimal amount of La2O3-TiO2 were 0.02 and 0.03 µmol/L, respectively. The relative standard deviation (RSD) based on fifty measurements was less than 3%. The versatility and novelty of the sensor were tested with food samples containing these substances and other substances.

  • In order to reduce the lead-time and cost, many useful methods have been applied to rapid prototyping (RP) in recent years. But cutting process is still considered as one of the effective RP methods that have been developed and currently available in the industry. It also offers practical advantages in aspects of precision and versatility. However, traditional 3-axis NC machining has some inherent limitations such as the restriction of tool accessibility and the complex setup. In this work, a new rapid prototyping system with high speed 5-axis machining of plastics has been developed to overcome those limitations. And cutting experiments were conducted to determine the design factors of the system and the cutting conditions of plastics. The architecture of developed system is described in detail and the successful application examples are presented.

  • Recently, reaction injection molding has been used broadly for rapid prototyping, because of its convenience and versatility. Since the properties of molded products are dependent on the process variables and the production is very short(less than 2minutes), the control of process variables is important. Generally, the two significant process variables are degree of cure and temperature of the reactants. In this paper, the relation between the degree of cure and the temperature of reactants was investigated to find the optimal curing condition of reaction injection molding for rapid prototyping. The degree of cure during reaction injection molding was measured by the Lacomtech sensor and dielectrometry equipment employing Wheatstone bridge type circuit.

  • Transient linear elastodynamic problems are numerically analyzed in a time-domain by the Finite Element Method, for which the variational formulation based upon the equations of motion in convolution integral is newly derived. This formulation is implicit and does not include the time derivative terms so that the computation procedure is simple and less assumptions are required comparing to the conventional time-domain dynamic numerical algorithms, being able to get the improved numerical accuracy and stability. That formulation is expanded using the semi-discrete approximation to obtain the finite element equations. In the temporal approximation, the time axis is divided equally and constant and linear time variations are assumed in those intervals. It is found that unconditionally stable numerical results are obtained in case of the constant time variation. Some numerical examples are given to show the versatility of the presented formulation.

  • The lateral arm flap was reported first by Song et al. in 1982, and Katsaros and colleagues described an anatomic study and clinical cases in 1984. This flap is thin, has relatively constant vascular anatomy, and provides relatively acceptable scar at the donor site. Despite its many advantages its wide application has been limited by its short vascular pedicle with small diameter of lumen, and its small skin paddle. We studied its anatomical structure to get longer length of vascular pedicle, wide diameter and thinner part of flap beyond the lateral condyle through 6 fresh cadaver dissection and dye injection study. We experienced 21 cases of lateral arm free flaps and 26 cases of forearm free flaps from May, 1992 to January, 1996. We compared its usefulness with forearm free flaps in the aspects of donor morbidity, operative factors, quality of flap, and versatility. In conclusion, lateral arm flap can replace the role of forearm flap in most cases so that patient's donor morbidity can be reduced especially in the women.
