Purpose: In this study differences in levels of performance and importance of nursing jobs were explored in relation to levels of work experience. Method: The sample was chosen by convenient sampling (N=363) and a cross-sectional study design was used. Frequencies and percentages were used for descriptive statistics. ANOVA was utilized to examine differences in performance and importance of nursing jobs among three groups of nurses, divided based on levels of work experience (less than 1 year, 1 to 4 years, and 5 or more years). Results: Regarding performance of nursing jobs, novice nurses provided more support for patients, but provided less assessment of patients (i.e., investigation of levels of nutrition and exercise, and observation of verbal, and non-verbal behavior, and levels of cognition). Regarding the importance of nursing jobs, nursing linked to exercise and activities, and post-operative and excretion care were considered to be less important among novice nurses than among experienced nurses. Conclusion: Different training programs should be developed and provided to nurses according to levels of work experience. By doing so, it will be feasible to minimize differences in quality of nursing care triggered by different levels of work experience.
Objective : Treatments for patients with mental retardation and pervasive developmental disorders are not curative, and are designed to help those with disabilities adjust to their environments and daily demands. As clinicians, the present authors tried to find agents with potentially curative properties. Among the numerous herbal formulations available, we chose and assessed Gami-jiwhang-tang (GJT) in the hope that it would improve cognitive development of children. Methods : Subjects were typically-developing healthy, 7- to 8-year-old boys and girls living in Seoul, Korea. The experimental group took GJT for six weeks and was followed up six weeks after discontinuation of GJT. The control group was assessed at the same intervals but did not receive placebos. To measure the effects of GJT, neuropsychological tests and intelligence test were taken before commencing GJT and twelve weeks later. Resulets and Conclusion : For all of the ANOVAs, the treatment by time interaction terms was not significant. However, the experimental group showed the tendency to be progressed in most subscales compared with the control group, especially on performance intelligence, visual organization, and verbal fluency. Conclusion : Although GJT failed to reveal significant improvement in cognition, we remain hopeful about the compound and believe that it should be evaluated by a double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in the future.
Objectives : This study investigated whether long-acting injectable (LAI) paliperidone is different from its oral form in terms of the effect on cognitive function in schizophrenia spectrum and other psychotic disorders. Methods : We reviewed the medical records of patients in Seoul National University Bundang Hospital who were diagnosed as having schizophrenia and/or other psychotic disorders based on DSM-5 from 2016 to 2017. Seven patients were treated with oral paliperidone and 11 were treated with paliperidone palmitate. All patients underwent clinical and neuropsychological assessment, including the Korean version of the MATRICS Consensus Cognitive Battery (MCCB) at their first visit or within one month of their initial treatment. MCCB was repeated within three to 12 months after the initial assessment. Results : There was no significant difference between the two groups in most cognitive domains including speed of processing, attention and vigilance, working memory, verbal learning, visual learning and reasoning and problem solving domain. However, patients treated with paliperidone palmitate showed better improvement in social cognition domain than those taking oral paliperidone. The standardized values of social cognition domain scores had significantly improved over time in patients under paliperidone palmitate, demonstrating a significant time-by-group interaction. Conclusion : Our results show that long-acting injectable paliperidone could be helpful in some aspects of improving cognitive function in schizophrenia spectrum and other psychotic disorders. Further studies with other antipsychotics are necessary to generalize the results.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the effects on cognitive function, mood, problematic behaviors and response to interaction with robot pet by elderly people with dementia. Method: A methodological triangulation design with quantitative and qualitative methods was used. The participants were 9 elderly people with dementia. The intervention was conducted twice a week for 4 weeks, Qualitative data were collected by interviews and video-taping for analysis of the responses of participants, Results: 1) Cognitive function, mood and problematic behaviors did not show any significantly differences after the program. 2) Analysis of the responses showed increases in verbal communication and positive action. Conclusion: The robot pet program had positive effects such as increasing communication and interaction. Therefore, this program could be considered as an effective program for emotional support for elderly people with dementia. However further repetitive study is need to validate the result.
Providing care to the dementia elderly with behavioral problem is a major issue in nursing homes today. This study was aimed to explore the nursing staffs′ response to aggressive dementia patients, and the effect that the aggressive behavior had on Nsgstaff. The interviews used a semi-structured questionnaire are were carried out from May to July, 1999. The subjects were 23 nursing personnel working in the nursing homes for dementia elderly. The result are as follows; 1. The types of aggressive behavior cited by the subjects was "physical", "linguistic", and "sexual". 2. The factors that caused the behavior were "symptoms of disease", "under- conditioning", "context of nursing care", "unsatisfied need", "relationship to other patients", "change of outer environment", and "invasion of one′s own privacy". 3. The response of the subjects were "unhappiness", "stress", "anger", "exaggeration", "anxiety", and "fear". 4. The management strategies listed by nursing personnel used to alleviate aggressive behavior were "ignorance" "patience" "leaving the area" "soothing sounds" "verbal punishment" "restriction and isolation" and "various management skill appliance" "adaptation". 5. The effect that aggressive behavior and were "disturbance of relationship to elderly" "decline in the amount and quality of nursing care" "interruption of task performance" "job exhaustion" "desire to leave the job" "physical impact" "stress on the cognition of others" "anxiety about health and one own future" "interference to family life′. The findings of this study will be useful in understanding the difficulties of nursing personnel when confronting the aggressive behavior of dementia partients. It also is useful as basic data in preparing efficient intervention program for these difficulties.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the influence of cognitive function and depressive symptoms on instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) in addition to identify the factors associated with IADL in community-dwelling older adults. Methods: This was a descriptive study with cross-sectional design. Data were collected from July 2013 to June 2014. A total of 143 participants without dementia, depression and disability were enrolled in this study. Cognitive function was measured using Seoul verbal learning test (SVLT), digital span (forward/backward) and fist-edge-palm test. The Korean-IADL and Short Geriatric Depression Scale (S-GDS) were used. Data analysis was performed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and hierarchical regression. Results: Overall, a multiple regression model revealed that approximately 27.4% of total variability in IADL in the sample of community-dwelling older adults could be explained by the significant 12 variables in this model ($R^2=0.274$, F=5.467, p<.001). Age, having religion and cognitive function were the predictors of IADL in community-dwelling older adults. Conclusion: This study suggest that we need to monitor cognitive function in older to maintain the ability for IADL in older adults. Also, individualized program for improving older adults' IADL should be included in nursing intervention.
Objectives It was the aim to examine the association of the thyroid-related hormones with cognitive function, depression, and subjective memory impairment in community-dwelling elders with questionable dementia. Methods The sample consisted of 399 community residents with 'questionable dementia' aged 60 or over in whom serum thyroid-related hormones [thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) and thyroxine] had been assayed. Cognitive impairment was defined using the Korean version of the Consortium Establish a Registry for Alzheimer's Disease. Depression was diagnosed using the Korean version of Geriatric Depression Scale and subjective memory complaint (SMC) was checked using the subjective memory complaints questionnaire (SMCQ). Age, gender, education, and the presence of apolipoprotein E {\varepsilon}4 were included as covariates. Results There was a significant positive association between verbal fluency test (VFT) score and serum TSH levels (p = 0.01). There was a significant negative association between SMCQ total score and word list memory test (WLMT)(p = 0.002) or word list recall test (WLRT) score (p = 0.013). Conclusions Lower serum TSH levels were associated with semantic memory (VFT), and we found that SMC was associated with episodic memory (WLMT and WLRT) in this sample.
Polygala Tenuifolia, also described as Yuan Zhi, is a conventional botanic plant found in Korea and China. It's most well- known promise is to improve cognition and guard against mental disorders, cure sputum, anxiety, and sleeplessness, and keep the central nervous system health. The pharmacological aspects of Polygala Tenuifolia's genesis and component compounds reveal the neuroprotective potential in connection to Alzheimer's disease. It contains three herbs: Bokshin, Sukchangpo, and Wongi. P. Tenuifolia's primary ingredients are Xanthone glycosides, Triterpenoid saponins, and Oligosaccharides. Polygalasaponins and Etrahydrocolumbamine are the major components, and they've been widely used for more than a century to relieve mood and psychological illnesses, particularly in North Asian countries such as Korea, China, Japan, and Taiwan. P. Tenuifolia extract eliminates allergic illnesses such as eczema and contact dermatitis by modulating Protein kinase-A and Mitogen-protein kinase-38. In vitro and in vivo studies linking P. tenuifolia root ingredients to a variety of pharmacological effects pertinent to AD show that this species' isolates may function through polyvalency. In great health, people can take up to 250-300 mg per day. It was given in peer-reviewed studies at dosages of 100-150 mg many times each day. There is minimal evidence that it improves verbal memory in experimental animals.
Nowadays, the studies on interface and cognition-engineering has become issues of general interest as newly design-methods which analyze the behavior of user on products. However existing studies were mainly done with verbal-centered method which made it difficult for the designer to apply for visual realization. Moreover many mistakes and noises are taken place whenever the designer converts verbal statements and needs of user into visual factors. Therefore the designer needs to analyze visual perception on user and product as visual-centered methods. This study applies the eye tracking method as analysing-instrument and aims to develop the analysis-framework, the concrete techniques of measurement and the application for the product design. At first the nature and the process of visual perception on products are reviewed for developing analysis method. Then the technique of eye tracking and the meaning of fixation and movement are discussed to specify the concrete method. The basic experiment of product can reveal general analysis process, advantage and guideline for the application of eye tracking method. The Study is peformed through the following 4 steps ; to pre-research into product design and visual perception theory ; to identify the concrete experiment method, to measure the fixation/movement data and analyze the raw data, to convert the result of analysis to the visual framework. Finally the major findings and the limits of the study are suggested and summarized.
This study was to examine the characteristics of aggressive behaviour of dementia patients. It was based on the observation of the patients in a facility for dementia patients. Observation continued for two days from 9a.m. to 5p.m .. aggressive behavior was recorded using the instrument of Ryden. The result of this study is as follows. 1. appearance rate of aggressive behaviour During two days $74\%$ of the patients did aggressive behaviour(first day-$41.8\%$. second day-$62.8\%$). The average aggressive behaviour per person was 1.65. 2. types of aggressive behaviour Aggressive behaviour was the most frequent in verbal domain(157 case; $52.5\%$). Physical domain was the second$(136case;\;45.5\%)$, and sexual domain was the last$(6 case;\;2.0\%)$. More concretely, abusive/vulgar language$(74case;\;24.7\%)$ was more than anything else. Aggressive language$(65case;\;21.7\%)$, pushing$(39case;\;13.0\%)$, intimidating posture$(21case;\;7.0\%)$. slapping $(18case;\; 6.0\%)$ followed it. 3. correlation to other factors such as sex. age etc. The average aggressive behaviour of female(2.07) was higher than that of male(1.23) (p=.05). Age also had meaningful correlation to the frequency of aggressive behaviour(p=.04). All the other factors-the period of living in facility, the seriousness of dementia. movements in daily life. CAPE, emotional state. the extent of trouble in cognition- have nothing to do with the frequency of aggressive behaviour. 4. the time, place and the target of aggressive behavior Aggressive behaviour appeared more frequently in the afternoon $(138case;\;46.4\%)$ than in the morning or at lunch time. The patient's room ranked the first in the list of places where aggressive behaviour took place $(162case;\; 54.5\%)$. Nursing personnel topped in the target of aggressive behaviour$(119case;\; 39.8\%)$. 5. the preceding causes of the aggressive behavior the most frequent preceding causes of the behavior was the stimulus of another residents $(133case, 44.4\%)$ and that of nsg personnel was few relatively$(65 cases,\; 21.7\%)$. 6. Nursing personnel used verbal reaction most frequently$(40 cases,\; 51\%)$ and in a behavioral reaction they used physical restraint $(12 cases,\; 17.1\%)$ most frequently. In the reactions of nsg personnel. the rate of undesired reaction was high$(41cases,\; 44.28\%)$. and in that of the attacked residents, the usual reaction was most frequent $(80cases,\; 65.0\%)$. In the future it is needed to investigate the characteristics of aggressive behavior of dementia patients, and based on this the method of intervention must be developed. Today the number of dementia patient increases so nurses must strive to encounter aggressive behavior more desirably.
