DEVELOPMENT OF NEW TAXONOMY OF INAPPROPRIATE COMMUNICATION AND ITS APPLICATION TO OPERATING TEAMS IN NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS

  • Inappropriate communications can cause a lack of necessary information exchange between operators and lead to serious consequences in large process systems such as nuclear power plants (NPPs). In this regard, various kinds of taxonomies of inappropriate communications have been developed to prevent inappropriate communications. However, there seems to be difficult to identify inappropriate communications from verbal protocol data between operators. Because the existing taxonomies were developed for use in report analysis, there is a problem of 'uncertainty'. In consequence, this paper proposes a new taxonomy of inappropriate communications and provides some insights to prevent inappropriate communications. In order to develop the taxonomy, existing taxonomies for four industries from 1980 to 2010 were collected and a new taxonomy is developed based on the simplified one-way communication model. In addition, the ratio of inappropriate communications from 8 samples of audio-visual format verbal protocol data recorded during emergency training sessions by operating teams is compared with performance scores calculated based on the task analysis. As a result, inappropriate communications can be easily identified from the verbal protocol data using the suggested taxonomy, and teams with a higher ratio of inappropriate communications tend to have a lower performance score.

  • Audible Pedestrian Signal(APS) is an additional equipment to provide information about pedestrian signals in non-visual formats such as audible tones and verbal messages. It can provide information to pedestrians about the location and directions of a crosswalk, and the traffic signal status. In general, a pedestrian who is visually impaired uses a 358.5MHz wireless remote controller to activate the APS and crosses at the crosswalk with the help of the APS. The existing APS can only receive an activation message from the remote controller. Therefore, the APS has an issue, especially at intersections, that all APSs within the communication range of the remote controller are activated simultaneously. It makes to confuse the visual impaired pedestrians. In this paper, we propose a BLE-enabled APS that can enable two-way communication via Bluetooth with a smartphone. The proposed system solves the problem and provides them with additional information, so that visually impaired pedestrians can cross at the crosswalk more conveniently.

A USEFULNESS OF KEDI-INDIVIDUAL BASIC LEARNING SKILLS TEST AS A DIAGNOSTIC TOOL OF LEARNING DISORDERS (학습 장애아 진단 도구로 기초 학습 기능 검사의 유용성에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine usefulness of KEDI-Individual Basic Learning Skills Test as a diagnostic tool of learning disorders(LD). Learning disorder group consisted of two subgroups, verbal learning disorder group(VLD, n=34) and nonverbal learning disorder group(NVLD, n=14). Comparison group consisted of Dysthymia Disorder subgroup(n=11) and Normal subgroup(n=20). Performance of intelligence test and achievement test was examined in all 4 subgroups. In KEDI-WISC, VLD subgroup revealed primary problems in vocabulary, information and verbal-auditory attention test. NVLD group revealed primary problems in almost all performance tests such as visual acuity, psycho-motor coordination speed and visual-spatial organizations ability subtest. In KEDI-Individual Basic Learning Test, VLD group revealed primary problems in phonological coding process, word recognition and mathematics. For successful classification of LD children, the importance of achievement test and intelligence test was discussed by discriminant analysis and factor analysis. The results indicate that KEDI-Individual Basic Learning Skills is of considerable usefulness in diagnosing LD, but must be used in subtests, and additional tests must be conducted for thorough exploration of LD.

  • This study is a fundamental research for the developing 3D character contents about facial expression as a sort of non-linguistic signs, focusing on an expression of emotion factors of a person. It contributes a framework for symbolic analysis about Human's emotions along with a general review of expression. The human face is the most complex and versatile of all species. For humans, the face is a rich and versatile instrument serving many different functions. It serves as a window to display one's own motivational state. This makes one's behavior more predictable and understandable to others and improves communication. The face can be used to supplement verbal communication. A prompt facial display can reveal the speaker's attitude about the information being conveyed. Alternatively, the face can be used to complement verbal communication, such as lifting of eyebrows to lend additional emphasis to stressed word. The facial expression plays a important role under the digital visual context. This study will present a frame of facial expression categories for effective manufacture of cartoon and animation that appeal to the visual emotion of the human.

  • Objectives : Patients with neck tumor and their family need every information about the disease. Especially, the size and location are confusing with verbal information. With the aid of CT, the problem had some answer, but it needs some medical education. We would like to know the usefullness of 3D reconstructed images in patient education about the disease. Material and Methods : Neck CT data were collected from 10 patients with various neck tumors and converted to 3D reconstructed images. Understanding of the patients about the size and location of tumors were rated from questionaires using axial CT images and 3D images. Results : Understanding score about 3D images were greater than that of CT images(p<0.006). Conclusion : 3D reconstructed images of CT could give the patients more real visual information about the disease.

  • Language is the method for communication. Semantician, G. Leech categorized the function of language as informational, expressive, directive, aesthetic and phatic one. Therefore, language can be defined as the social symbol system and the media for communication. Space, also, performs the role of symbol, information and communication. Space can be the media for the communication and the design can be logical construction process by it's arbitrary interpretation. The researcher considered the common points between verbal language and visual language as the tools for the mutual communication, tried to transit them into the 'space' as object language after analyzing 'image of poetry' as meta language, so that the old perspective of space design as function can be renewed as information system of the significant meaning delivery in the context of language's multiplicity, expandibility and changeability.

  • Customer needs are considered as being quite remarkable in product design. The elaborate fulfillment of them in the design solution is closely related to the success of a product. They, however, are generally collected and presented by marketers. Consequently those needs are difficult for designers to understand and therefore might not get fulfilled in the final product design. Here the goal of this study is set that the process of design information elicitation based on customer needs is developed as a guideline of utilizing them in design activity in effective manners. findings of this study can be summarized as follows: First, customer needs are expected to get interpreted into the designer-oriented language in the aspect of function and image of a product. Those interpreted needs play a role as a base for concept establishment and the development of it with the help of various techniques from the fold of statistics and systematic product development. Second, designer-oriented manner of understanding customer needs requires designers to take parts in from collecting to interpreting them for better design solution that fulfills them, which brings up a necessity that available techniques shouldn't be beyond understanding of designers and for the styling activity customer needs of image aspect should be interpreted and presented visually. In this study, those visual information is presented through the image maps and image information sheet. It is image information sheet that is suggested to contain visual and verbal information altogether such as the overall and major elements images expressing a specific image need and the correlation between them showing how much the elements image contributes to building the overall image.

Classification and Analysis of Accompanying Inscriptions Used in Elementary Science Textbooks (초등학교 과학 교과서에서 사용된 보조적 시각 자료의 분류 및 분석)

  • Elementary students are tend to depend heavily on visual informations in the cognitive process. Thus, elementary science textbooks provide science contents mostly by inscriptions, the visual materials, with little verbal information in the limited page area. Especially, since the textbooks include many accompanying inscriptions rather than a basic inscription, it is very important to understand the relationships among many inscriptions in teaching and leaning science. Therefore, this study analyzed the status and characteristics of accompanying inscriptions used. in elementary science textbooks, and classified them according to their functions. As results, we found six types of the accompanying inscriptions such as inner part, detail, result, process, emphasis, and explanation. Accompanying inscriptions were used more frequently in the lower grade (3rd and 4th grades) than the higher grade (5th and 6th grades). We discussed the examples of each type in detail, and thus revealed some possible difficulties in understanding inscriptions caused by the inconsistency of the directions of the basic inscription and accompanying inscription, and by the absence of the sign linking the basic and accompanying inscriptions.

Cyberbullying Victimization Experience on SNSs: Focusing on Self-disclosure, Compulsive Internet Use, and Depressive Status (SNS상에서 사이버불링 피해경험: 자기노출, 강박적 인터넷 사용 그리고 우울한 상태 중심으로)

  • Cyberbullying has become a critical issue as people (especially, young people) daily use social networking sites (SNSs). This study investigates possible factors affecting cyberbullying victimization experiences, comparing SNS users in Austria and Korea. Particularly, this study focuses on how individuals' self-disclosure patterns, compulsive Internet use, and depressive status are related to four different types of cyberbullying victimization experiences (written-verbal, visual, exclusion, and impersonation). Furthermore, the results are compared between SNS users in Austria and Korea. Results from total 519 respondents show that self-disclosure patterns on SNSs, compulsive Internet use, and depressive status are positively related to different types of cyberbullying victimization experiences. However, there are differences between Austria and Korea. For example, the frequency of changing one's profile setting is positively related to all types of cyberbullying victimization experiences in Korea, while it is only positively related to victimization experience of visual cyberbullying in Austria. Depressive status is only positively related to victimization experience of written-verbal cyberbullying in Korea, while it is positively related to all types of cyberbullying victimization experience in Austria.
