  • A test was performed to collect the data to validate an analytic method for vent hole sizing on the nose fairing of a launch vehicle. The bake-out chamber at KARI was used to simulate the ambient pressure drop, and pressure difference data were collected for a model with various kinds of vent holes which was installed in the chamber. The characteristics of the test facility and measurement equipments were evaluated for the measurement of the transient behaviors. The measured data were processed in consideration of the characteristics of the facility and equipments, and the effects of vent hole size and configuration on the pressure variation in the model were analyzed based on the data.

Experimental Study on Ventilation Efficiency of Leakage Gas Based on Supply and Exhaust Vent Location (밀폐공간에서 급·배기구 위치에 따른 누출 가스의 환기효과에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • Climate change is currently one of the most pressing environmental issues, primarily caused by carbon emissions from fossil fuel usage. As a result, alternative fuels that effectively reduce carbon emissions are garnering more attention. Among these alternatives, hydrogen has numerous advantages, such as its ability for large-scale storage and transport. However, it is crucial to prioritize safety measures, particularly in facilities that handle hydrogen, due to its highly flammable and fast-spreading nature. This study aims to compare and analyze the placement of supply and exhaust vents to efficiently release hydrogen in the event of a leak in an enclosed space. The experiments involved six different scenarios, each with various combinations of supply and exhaust vents. To ensure the experimental process's safety, helium, which shares similar physical properties with hydrogen, was used to analyze the internal oxygen concentration during ventilation system operations. The results revealed that among the six scenarios, Case 2, which employed a lower side supply vent and an upper side exhaust vent, exhibited the shortest ventilation time of 4 minutes and 30 seconds. Additionally, the decrease rate in oxygen concentration was examined in the upper, middle, and lower areas. Ventilation utilizing an upper surface supply vent and two exhaust vents on the upper surface and upper side (Case 6), showed lower oxygen concentration values in the upper area, while Case 2 yielded lower values in the middle and lower areas. Therefore, it is crucial to select an appropriate supply and exhaust vent configuration considering the space's characteristics and usage environment.

  • Water modeling experiments and computer simulation for the predictions of defects of die castings are very important to produce high quality castings with less cost. The relation between the variable air vent system and the characteristics of the fluid flow in the die cavity is studied by using water modeling tests, which give ideas on reasonable designing of die cavity, vent arrangement and gating system. In order to test the water modeling, injection is done by using water containing NaCl. Flow behaviors in cavities are visualized by high speed camera and video tape recorder, and local filling time is measured with electrode sensors. Special attention is paid to the configuration of die cavity. Simulated results by computer are examined and compared with the results of water modeling experiments. There are close correlations between the simulated results and water modeling ones.

Cooling Characteristics of Fruits and Vegetables for Pressure Cooling (차압통풍 예냉 청과물의 냉각특성)

  • Numerous variables affect product cooling rate of pressure cooling system for fruits and vegetables. These include carton vent area, initial and desired final product temperature, flow rate and temperature of the cooling air, product size, shape and thermal properties and product configuration(whether in bulk or packed in shipping cartons). This study was carried out to determine the influence of each of these variables as they affect cooling time. The opening ratio and number of the vent hole were recomended as 4∼10% and 2∼4ea., respectively, for a minimum alt flow resistance and for a uniform air flow pattern. In the cooling experiment for tomatoes and mandarins, optimum air flow rate was 0.04 m3/min.kg in terms of energy saving. The cooling air temperature should be about 2$^{\circ}C$ less than the desired final product temperature for reducing cooling time.

  • In this paper a method for analysing aerodynamic characteristics of a rotating parachute in steady descending motion is presented. Because of a complex geometric configuration of the parachute associated with side vents and discontinuous skirts, special procedure was adopted th handle the geometry in the analysis. A panel method was successfully applied to the present problem and yielded good results using above procedure. A CFD code using the full Navier-Stokes equations was also applied and provided good results. Parachute free drop and wind tunnel tests were performed to determine the fully developed canopy configuration and aerodynamic characteristics. The method can be used for optimizing the parachute size and side vent configurations in the design period.

Evaluation of the Excess Free Energy for Two-Center-Lennard-Jones Liquids Using the Vent Effective Acceptance Ratio

  • A method of calculating the excess Helmholtz free energy from the average of the bent effective acceptance ratio for two-center-Lennard-Jones liquids has been presented. The bent effective acceptance ratio has been newly composed from the acceptan ce ratio for the potential energy difference between a configuration in the Metropolis Monte Carlo procedure and random virtual configuration generated by the separate parallel Monte Carlo procedure and the Boltzmann factor for half the potential energy difference. The excess Helmholtz free energy was calculated directly from the average of the bent effective acceptance ratio through a single Metropolis Monte Carlo run. Because the separate parallel Monte Carlo procedure was used, this method can be applied to molecular dynamics simulations. For two-center-Lennard-Jones liquids, the average of the bent effective acceptance ratio gave better results than use of the modified effective acceptance ratio in the previous work.

  • Venting capability to prevent excess pressurization caused by loss of Residual Heat Removal System (RHRS) during mid-loop operation hat been evaluated analytically and the peak Reactor Coolant System (RCS) pressure was compared with the results of the MIDLOOP computer code. Even though analytical method if relatively simple, the results are in a good agreement with those of the computer code. For both methods, the peak pressures have not, exceeded the nozzle dam design pressure, if the vent paths such as pressurizer safety valves or a pressurizer manway are available in a closed RCS configuration with the nozzle dam installed.

  • Flow characteristics of base region of small scaled 4 nozzle clustered engine has been analyzed with CFD approach along with the tests of numerical methods. The numerical test shows that Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model is appropriate for the present research. Plumes expanded from nozzles exits collide with each other and make high pressure stagnation region. Some of collided plumes expand again reversely into the base region with supersonic speeds. The reversed plume in the base region goes out to the outer region through the minimum vent area formed by the nearest nozzle exterior surfaces. But different from the empirical theory, the minimum vent area does not play a role of throat. Additionally the temperature of the nozzle inner surface strongly affects the temperature of the reversed plumes.

  • In recent years, as safety management in underground mines has become more important in the worldwide, mine safety management technologies combining information communication technology such as real-time worker position tracking, monitoring system and equipment remote control have been developed. Wireless communication system is mainly applied to these technologies for the flexibility of network configuration. There are some cases the monitoring system was installed in domestic underground mines, but, it is necessary to develop the technology more suitable for domestic mining standard. In this study, we developed the real-time environmental monitoring system using ZigBee technology and examined the result of application to domestic limestone mine. Furthermore, applicability of the developed environment monitoring system to $VentSim^{TM}$ LiveView was checked. This study is expected to contribute to the related studies like the optimization of the ventilation system in underground mines.
