The understory vegetation of a Chamaecyparis obtusa plantation is relatively sparse at a valley in Sangkwan-my6n, Wanju-gun, Chiinbuk, Korea, and that of the pure C. obtusa plantation is more sparse than in the C, obtusa-Larix leptolepis plantation. In order to investigate the causes of this difference, this study was carried out both in the field and in the laboratory. Total of 109 taxa, comprising 90 genera and 53 families, were identified in the plantation. But the average number of species above 10% frequency was only 27, and both the number of species and plants per quadrat in the pure C. obtusa plantation were lower than those in the C, obtusa-L. leptolepis plantation. Light intensity, soil pH, and the difference of soil minerals were supposed to be parts of the causes. Soils, litter extracts of C. obtusa and L. leptolepis, and leachates collected by vermiculite beneath C. obtusa canopy for 1 year were tested for the effect on germination and seedling growth of both inside species and outside species in the laboratory. Germination and seedling growth of outside species were more suppressed than those of inside species. Therefore it was found that allelopathic effect of C. obtusa would be responsible for the sparse understory vegetation in the C. oblusa plantation.

Recently Korean government announced the vision for low-carbon green growth. Quantifying of the carbon storage, distribution, and change of urban trees is vital to understanding the role of vegetation in the urban environment. In the city planning the carbon storage estimation has become an important factor. In this paper, KOMPSAT-2 satellite imagery was used to develop a method to predict the urban forest carbon storage from the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) computed from a time sequence image data. The total carbon storage change by trees in the 6 administrative zonings of Jinju was estimated using the image data in 2007 and 2009. Therefore the paper presents a method based on the satellite images, which can estimate the spread of urban tree and carbon storage variation using KOMPSAT-2.

Topographic changes in the foredune in Sohwang-ri, Boryeong, Chungnam Province was analyzed over the last two years. Seven cross-sections and one permanent plot ($20m{\times}50m$) were periodically studied based on erosion and deposition measurement, in addition to vegetation monitoring and measurement of wind using an automatic weather station. The sand dunes usually grew from late winter to spring and the growth occurred in a period of strong northwesterly winds. From March to April, heavy sedimentation was observed on the front section of the foredune and sand piled up to ca. 30cm to the ca. 25m landward from the high tide line. It is likely that increased wind force and growth of vegetation played a major role in transportation and sedimentation of sand. Meanwhile, the lower part of the sand dunes was eroded when typhoon and spring tide caused a rise in sea level. The transition zone of beach and dune was usually affected by sea water but some frontal slopes were entirely influenced, resulting in dune scarps. The eroded scarps were naturally restored to their original state as time passed.
The taxonomic characteristics of Eupatorium rugosum were reviewed and growth responses under different light intensities were investigated. Changes of soil and vegetation environments at experimental plots on Mt. Namsan were surveyed and the distribution pattern examined. The distribution of E. rugosum was closely related to the content of total nitrogen and available phosphorus in the soil. No competitors which could inhibit the growth of E. rugosum were present. Growth of E. rugosum was highest at a light intensity of 7, 500 lux, but dry weight was highest at a light intensity of 15, 000 lux followed by 30, 000 and 7, 500 lux. Growth in height of E. rugosum under a light intensity of 1, 500 lux continued even though the amount of growth was small. E. rugosum is found throughout the area of Mt. Namsan, and its density is higher at the roadside and in valley regions. E. rugosum appeared at 25 of 50 quadrats on Mt. Namsan, and the mean coverage of E. rugosum in survey quadrats was 12%.
This study was conducted to evaluate the vegetation, distribution and growth pattern of Glehnia littoralis community by the DCA ordination method in eastern coast of Korea. The number of plant species growth with G. littoralis in natural habitat was found 51 taxa, and species of high frequency among 51 taxa was Ixeris repens, Calystegia soldanella, Carex kobomugi, Elymus mollis, Lathyrus japonica and Zoysia macrostachya. Indicator species of Z. macrostachya, Linaria japonica, C. soldanella, I. repens, Carex pumila, Artemisia capillaris, Oenothera biennis, L. japonica and E. mollis in G. littoralis community was differential species of syntaxonomy. C. kobomugi, Z. macrostachya, E. mollis, Cynodon dactylon and L. japonica was the distribution in dryness sand and moisture sandyloam, I. repens, C. soldanella, L. japonica and C. pumila was the distribution in dryness sand. In coastal dune, I. repens, C. soldanella, Salsola komarovi and G. littoralis combined strength of the distribution, and sand of coast was typical of the habitat.

The growth of impermeable layers in the city center due to today's urban development is emerging as a major cause of urban heat island effects as well as recurring inland flood damages. In order to cope with such disasters caused by climatic changes, an artificial ground afforestation system is suggested as a fundamental solution that addresses both water environment and heat environment. For the afforestation system to replace the current disaster prevention facilities, quantitative performance verification through related numerical analysis models and actual survey monitoring is necessary. Therefore, this study seeks to propose the performance predication method for the heat environment of the afforestation system by looking into correlations between measurements by physical vegetation indicators such as LAI and FVC and forecasts from FASST, a vegetation canopy model used by US Corps of Engineers.
The seasonal variations of the marine algal community were detected with quadrat method during May, 1974-May, 1975 at several stations in the Kwang Yang Bay. Considering the environmental factors such as salinity and water current, etc., and algal vegetation, the Bay was divided into 3 sections; Section I-Myodo and the adjacent area; Section II-Eomnamuseom and the adjacent area; Section III-inlet of the Bay from Odongdo, Yeosu. The dominant species, shown by 5-grades coverage and bimonthly investigations, appear in the order of Sargassum thunbergii(Jan.)>Chondria crassicaulis (Mar.)>Ulva pertusa(May)>U. pertusa (July)>U. pertusa and Gigartina intermedia(Sept.)> Sarg. thunbergii and Gelidium pusillum (Nov.) in Section I, and Sargassum thunbergii(Jan.)>Ulva pertusa and Hizikia fusiforme (Mar.)>U. pertusa and Sarg. thunbergii(May)>Chondria crassicaulis (Sept.)>Ch. crassicaulis (Nov.) in Section II. The members such as Srgassum thunbergii, Gelidium pusillum, G. divaricatum, Hizikia fusiforme, Carpopeltis affinis, and Chondria crassicaulis show the most luxuriant period of growth in winter (Nov.-Mar.), while Ulva pertusa shows the period in May. However, considering the dry weight of total vegetation, the most luxuriant period apperas in May and the poorest one in July. The total dry weight of the vegetation in Section II is about 3.2 times more than the one in Section I.

Different vegetation indices from satellite images have been used for monitoring drought damages, and this study aimed to develop a drought index using NOAA/AVHRR NDVI(Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) and to analyze the temporal and spatial distribution of spring drought severity in North Korea from 1998 to 2001. A new drought index, DevNDVI(Deviation of NDVI), was defined as the difference between a monthly NDVI and average monthly NDVI at the same cover area, and the DevNDVI images at all years except for 2001 demonstrated the drought-damaged areas referred from various domestic and foreign publications. The vegetation of 2001 showed high vitality despite the least amount of rainfall among the target years, and the reason was investigated that higher temperature above normal average would shift the growing stages of plants ahead. Therefore, complementary methods like plant growth models or ground survey data should be adopted in order to evaluate drought-induced plant stress using satellite-based NDVI and to make up far the distortion induced by other environments than lack of precipitation.
Ten plots were established to study the vegetation structure of the Songinbong virgin forest in Ullungdo. It was classified into three communities Fagus crenata var. multinervis commnunity, Acer okamotoanum-Fagus crenata var. multinervis community, and Acer okamotoanum community. Shannon's diversity indicies of this area were not high(0.5150~0.8437), due to the geographical and vegetational characteristics. Considering the community structure(importance value, distribution of DBH class, and so on), the vegetation of the Songinbong virgin forest are thought to be stable continuously. With the analysis of plant growth type, it was presumed that Acer okamotoanum have increased after artificial disturbances in this area where Fagus crenata var. multinervis had been dominanat.
