  • To solve the rule explosion problem in multi input fuzzy logic system, a method of converting a given fuzzy system to 2 layered hierarchical fuzzy system is presented where the collection of the THEN-parts of the fuzzy rules of given fuzzy system is considered as vectors of fuzzy rule. At the 1 st layer, linearly independent fuzzy rule vectors generated from the given fuzzy logic system are used and, at the 2nd layer, linear combinations of these independent fuzzy rule vectors are used for fuzzy logic units at each layer. The resultant 2 layered hierarchical fuzzy system has not only equivalent approximation capability, but less number of fuzzy rules compared with the conventional fuzzy logic system.

  • To make an accurate retrieval of the proportion of each category among mixed pixels (Mixel's) of a remotely sensed imagery, a maximum likelihood estimation method of category proportion is proposed. In this method, the observed multispectral vector is considered as probability variables along with the approximation that the supervised data of each category can be characterized by normal distribution. The results show that this method can retrieve accurate proportion of each category among Mixel's. And a index that can estimate the degree of error in each category is proposed. AS one of the application of the proportion estimation, a method for image classification based on category proportion estimation is proposed. In this method all pixel in a remotely sensed imagery are assumed to be Mixel's, and are classified to most dominant category. Among the Mixel's, there exists unconfidential pixels which should be categorized as unclassified pixels. In order to discriminate them, two types of criteria, Chi square and AIC, are proposed for fitness test on pure pixel hypothesis. Experimental result with a simulated dataset show an usefulness of proposed classification criterion compared to the conventional maximum likelihood criterion and applicability of the fitness tests based on Chi square and AIC,

  • This paper presents a neural net based nonlinear adaptive controller for an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV). AUV's dynamics are highly nonlinear and their hydrodynamic coefficients vary with different operational conditions, so it is necessary for the high performance control system of an AUV to have the capacities of learning and adapting to the change of the AUV's dynamics. In this paper a linearly parameterized neural network is used to approximate the uncertainties of the AUV's dynamic, and the basis function vector of network is constructed according to th AUV's physical properties. A sliding mode control scheme is introduced to attenuate the effect of the neural network's reconstruction errors and the disturbances in AUV's dynamics. Using Lyapunov theory, the stability of the presented control system is guaranteed as well as the uniformly boundedness of tracking errors and neural network's weights estimation errors. Finally, numerical simulations for motion control of an AUV are performed to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed techniques.

  • The computation of moving interface by the level set method typically requires reinitializations of level set function. An inaccurate estimation of level set function ${\phi}$ results in incorrect free-surface capturing and thus errors such as mass gain/loss. Therefore, accurate and robust reinitialization process is essential to the free-surface flows. In the present paper, we pursue further development of the reinitialization process, which evaluates directly level set function ${\phi}$ using a normal vector in the interface without solving the re-distancing equation of hyperbolic type. The Taylor-Galerkin approximation and P1P1splitting FEM are adopted to discretize advection equation of the level set function and the Navier-Stokes equation, respectively. Advection equation of free surface and re-initialization process are validated with benchmark problems, i.e., a broken dam flow and time-reversed single vortex flow. The simulation results are in good agreement with the existing results.

  • The formation process of a current sheet is important for solar flare from a viewpoint of a space weather prediction. We therefore derive the temporal development of the spatial and statistical distribution of electric current density distributed in a flare-producing active region to describe the formation of a current sheet. We derive time sequence distribution of electric current density by applying a nonlinear force-free approximation reconstruction to Active Region 12158 that produces an X1.6-class flare. The time sequence maps of photospheric vector magnetic field used for reconstruction are captured by a Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager (HMI) onboard Solar Dynamic Observatory (SDO) on 10th September, 2014. The spatial distribution of electric current density in NLFFF model well reproduce observed sigmoidal structure at the preflare phase, although a layer of high current density shrinks at the postflare phase. A double power-law profile of electric current density is found in statistical analysis. This may be expected to use an indicator of the occurrence of a solar flare.

  • This paper presents an efficient algorithm to estimate the maximum load level for heavily loaded power systems with the load-generation vector obtained by ELD (Economic Load Dispach) and/or short term load forecasting while utilizing the elliptic pattern of the P-e curve. It is well known the power flow equation in the rectangular corrdinate is jully quadratic. However, the coupling between e and f makes it difficult to take advantage of this quadratic characteristic. In this paper, the elliptic characteristics of P-e curve are illustrated and a simple technique is proposed to reflect the e-f coupling effects on the estimation of maximum loadability with theoretical analysis. An efficient estimation algorithm has been developed with the use of the elliptic properties of the P-e curve. The proposed algorithm is tested on IEEE 14 bus system, New England 39 bus system and IEEE 118 bus system, which shows that the maximum load level can be efficiently estimated with remarkable improvement in accuracy.

  • The 3-noded metric Timoshenko beam element with an offset of the internal node from the element centre is used here to demonstrate the best-fit paradigm using function space formulation under locking and mesh distortion. The best-fit paradigm follows from the projection theorem describing finite element analysis which shows that the stresses computed by the displacement finite element procedure are the best approximation of the true stresses at an element level as well as global level. In this paper, closed form best-fit solutions are arrived for the 3-noded Timoshenko beam element through function space formulation by combining field consistency requirements and distortion effects for the element modelled in metric Cartesian coordinates. It is demonstrated through projection theorems how lock-free best-fit solutions are arrived even under mesh distortion by using a consistent definition for the shear strain field. It is shown how the field consistency enforced finite element solution differ from the best-fit solution by an extraneous response resulting from an additional spurious force vector. However, it can be observed that when the extraneous forces vanish fortuitously, the field consistent solution coincides with the best-fit strain solution.

  • In order to handle the problem that puncture patterns will change the position distribution of original information bits and frozen bits in polar codes, which affects performance of puncture polar codes further, a minimum row weight and polar spectrum based puncture polar codes construction algorithm (called PA-MRWP) is proposed in this paper. The algorithm calculates row weight of generator matrix and sorts the row weight in ascending order first. Next, the positions with the minimum row weight are selected as initial puncture positions. If the rows with the same row weight cannot all be punctured, polar spectrum based auxiliary puncture scheme is used. In sub-channels with the same row weight, rows corresponding to the polarized sub-channels with higher reliability are selected as puncture positions to construct puncture vector, and the reliability is calculated based on polar spectrum. It is actually a two-step selection strategy, the proposed minimum row weight puncture (MRWP) algorithm is used for primary selection and polar spectrum based auxiliary puncture is used for adjustment. Simulation results show that, compared with worst quality puncture (WQP) algorithm, the proposed PA-MRWP algorithm and Gaussian approximation-aided minimum row weight puncture (GA-MRWP) algorithm provide gains of about 0.46 dB and 0.29 dB at bit error rate (BER) of 10-4, respectively when code length N=400, code rate R=1/2. In addition, the proposed puncture algorithms improve the BER performance significantly with respect to quasi-uniform puncture (QUP) algorithm.
