This study was to estimate and complete the flora of herbaceous plants found in Mt. Kyeryong National Park, Mt. Bomoon, and Mt. Shikjang in Taejon Korea. This research was conducted from April 1995 to August 1998. Herbaceous vascular plants were composed of 76 families,336 genera,574 species,4 subspecies, 105 varieties and 9 forms, totaling 691 taxa. The useful resource plants were categorized as edible plants (45.4%), medical plants (31.1%), pasture plants (28.7%), ornamental plants (16.4%) and industrial plants (1.6%).
Hemodynamic shear stress, the frictional force acting on vascular endothelial cells, is crucial for endothelial homeostasis under normal physiological conditions. When discussing blood flow effects on various forms of endothelial (dys)function, one considers two flow patterns: steady laminar flow and disturbed flow because endothelial cells respond differently to these flow types both in vivo and in vitro. Laminar flow which exerts steady laminar shear stress is atheroprotective while disturbed flow creates an atheroprone environment. Emerging evidence has provided new insights into the cellular mechanisms of flowdependent regulation of vascular function that leads to cardiovascular events such as atherosclerosis, atherothrombosis, and myocardial infarction. In order to study effects of shear stress and different types of flow, various models have been used. In this review, we will summarize our current views on how disturbed flow-mediated signaling pathways are involved in the development of atherosclerosis.
A study on the species description, enumeration and interspecific relationships of genus Filipendula was undertaken for four Korean and two Japanese species. The use of scanning electron miroscope(SEM) has made possible a detailed study of foliar trichomes, pollen grains and fruit surface features. A new method for the preparation of SEM samples was developed in this study. Filipendula glaberrima, F. formosa, and F. korean were reliable endemic species. Among them, F. glaberrima shares many characteristics with F. formosa. F. gloaberrima can be divided into tow types based on leaf, seed, flower and pollen characters. Type I is characterized by ciliated fruits, many branched vascular bundles on the petal, dense trichomes on the leaf vein of abaxial surface, and many foveolate pollen surface. Type II possesses glabrous fruits, a few vascular bundles on the petal, rare trichomes on the leaf vein and a few foveolate pollen surface. The significant taxonomic characteristics in the classification of genus Filipendula are their lengths of fruit stalks, the densities of marginal trichomes of fruits, and textures of stipules.
The vascular flora of grasslands in Mt. Kumhak, Moonheri, Sungilkyo and Kosukjong area located at Chulwon were composed of 54, 57, 45, and 39 species, the most impotant of which were Arundinella hirta and Miscanthus purpurascens. These two species contributed greatly to the standing crop of live material was in excess of 142g/$m^2$ throughout the growing season. The peak standing crop of 332.4g/$m^2$ was reached in July under flooded conditions largely as a result of the growth of Miscanthus Purpurascens and Arundinella hirta. The net production of organic matter occurred largely throughout the growing season. The net productivity of the vascular component of community was in excess of 27.3g/$m^2$ for one growing season.
The structural changes in the vascular cambium and secondary xylem Alnus hirsuta (SPACH) Rupr. have been investigated in relation to the girth of the tree. The fusiform initials gain a gradual size increase and later remain more or less constant in their length and width. The width of the ray initials remain constant but their heights gradually increase before becoming almost constant. Xylem elements undergo considerable changes in their dimension with the growing girth of the tree and their trends of structural changes are the same as those of cambium.
Hypoxic culture is widely recognized as a method to efficiently expand human mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) without loss of stem cell properties. However, the molecular basis of how hypoxia priming benefits MSC expansion remains unclear. In this report, our systemic quantitative proteomic and RT-PCR analyses revealed the involvement of hypoxic conditioning activated genes in the signaling process of the mitotic cell cycle. Introduction of screened two mitotic cyclins, CCNA2 and CCNB1, significantly extended the proliferation lifespan of MSCs in normoxic condition. Our results provide important molecular evidence that multipotency of human MSCs by hypoxic conditioning is determined by the mitotic cell cycle duration. Thus, the activation of mitotic cyclins could be a potential strategy to the application of stem cell therapy.
Trees have the ability to undergo secondary growth and produce a woody body. This tree-specific growth is affected by the secondary vascular system and the developmental continuum of secondary phloem and xylem. Secondary growth is one of the most important biological processes on earth. Considering its economic and environmental significance, our knowledge of tree growth and development is surprisingly limited. Trees have received little attention as model species in plant science, as most Plant biology questions can be best addressed by using herbaceous model species, such as Arabidopsis. Furthermore, tree biology is difficult to study mainly due to the inherent problems of tree species, including large size, long generation time, large genome size, and recalcitrance to biotechnological manipulations. Despite all of this, one must rely on trees as models to study tree-specific questions, such as secondary growth, which cannot be studied effectively in non-woody model species. Recent advances in genomics technology provide a unique opportunity to overcome these inherent tree-related problems. Several groups, including our own, have been successful in studying the biology of wood formation with a variety of hardwood and softwood species. In this article, 1 first review the current understanding of tree growth and then discuss the recent attempts to fully explore and realize the potential of molecular biology as a tool for enhanced understanding of secondary growth.

Reports of a global decline in pollinator populations, especially mason bees, have raised concerns regarding the maintenance of pollination interactions. Although addressing local factors causing bee decline is a potential mitigation strategy at the landscape scale, regional rates and high-latitude threats to bee diversity are unclear. We investigated the distribution of mason bees (Osmia. spp. (O. pedicornis, O. corniforns, O. taurus, and O. satoi) and measured species richness and species ratios at regional, latitudinal, and altitudinal scales. We examined the association between bee species richness and three putative environmental conditions: high-low, altitude-dependent, and latitude-dependent. The species richness of the O. pedicornis bee was the highest and it was found between latitudes 35° and 37°, and at 500-600 m in both the northern and southern hemispheres, showing an inverse latitudinal gradient of bee species richness in South Korea. Mason bee species richness and global climate are important predictors of flowering plant diversity. Climate change threatens bee and vascular plant diversity; however, the overlap between bee abundance and plant diversity can be improved by employing suitable conservation strategies.
