  • Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are grown on the TiN-coated silicon substrate by varying the thickness of Ni and Invar426 catalyst layers at 600$^{\circ}C$ using an inductively coupled plasma-chemical vapor deposition (ICP-CVD). The Ni and Invar426 catalysts are formed using an RF magnetron sputtering system with various deposition periods. Characterization using various techniques, such as FESEM, HRTEM, and Raman spectroscopy, shows that the physical dimension as well as the crystal quality of grown CNTs are strongly changed by the kind and thickness of catalyst materials. It is also seen that Ni catalysts would be more desirable for vertical-alignment of CNTs compared with Invar426 catalysts. However, the CNTs using Invar426 catalysts display much better electron emission capabilities than those using Ni catalysts. The physical reason for all the measured data obtained are discussed to establish the relationship between structural properties and field-emissive properties of CNTs.

  • A series of finite element analyses of the rolling process were performed and a neural network algorithm was employed to calculate the amount of ski-effect for an arbitrary thickness of incoming material in the roll gap. Pilot hot plate rolling tests were also conducted to verify the usefulness of the finite element analyzes conducted in this study. In these experiments, plates with thicknesses varying from 25 to 65 mm were tested. In addition, a number of rolling reductions of up to 31% were examined. Finally, a number of circumferential upper and lower rolls were investigated. Experimental validations demonstrated that the neural network algorithm predicted the proper amount of ski when rolling conditions(material thickness, reduction ratio, roll velocity differential) changed arbitrarily.

  • In this study, the tribological characteristics of silver films that were deposited on a glass substrate by electroless plating were investigated. The electroless-plating method has many notable advantages. It is easy and economical to obtain solid films using this coating process, and it can be applied to both nonconducting and conducting substrates. In this study, silver was selected as the electroless-plating material because it is one of the most common materials used as a solid lubricant. The mechanical properties of silver electroless-plated specimens were investigated for various coating conditions. The thickness of the coating could be controlled by varying the electroless-plating time. The properties of the coatings were investigated using AFM, SEM, and a tribotester.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of diets with varying levels of calcium on egg production, shell quality and overall calcium status in aged laying hens. A total of five hundred 70-wk-old Hy-Line Brown layers were divided five groups and fed one of the five experimental diets with 3.5%, 3.8%, 4.1%, 4.4%, or 4.7% Ca, for 10 weeks. There were no significant differences in feed intake, egg production and egg weight among groups. The cracked eggs were linearly reduced as dietary Ca levels increased to 4.7% (p<0.01). A significant linear improvement for eggshell strength and thickness were determined with increasing dietary Ca levels (p<0.01). The contents of serum Ca and phosphorus were not affected by dietary Ca levels. With increase in dietary Ca levels, the tibial breaking strength slightly increased. There were no significant differences in the tibial contents of ash, Ca and phosphorus among groups. In conclusion, eggshell quality, as measured by appearance, strength and thickness of eggshell, were influenced by dietary Ca content as expected (p<0.05). These results suggested that aged laying hens require relatively higher level of Ca than required levels from current Korean feeding standards for poultry.

  • A unified formulation of finite layer methods (FLMs), based on the Reissner mixed variational theorem (RMVT), is developed for the three-dimensional (3D) coupled electro-elastic analysis of simply-supported, functionally graded piezoelectric material (FGPM) plates with open- and closed-circuit surface conditions and under electro-mechanical loads. In this formulation, the material properties of the plate are assumed to obey an exponent-law varying exponentially through the thickness coordinate, and the plate is divided into a number of finite rectangular layers, in which the trigonometric functions and Lagrange polynomials are used to interpolate the in- and out-of-plane variations of the primary field variables of each individual layer, respectively, such as the elastic displacement, transverse shear and normal stress, electric potential, and normal electric displacement components. The relevant orders used for expanding these variables in the thickness coordinate can be freely chosen as the linear, quadratic and cubic orders. Four different mechanical/electrical loading conditions applied on the top and bottom surfaces of the plate are considered, and the corresponding coupled electro-elastic analysis of the loaded FGPM plates is undertaken. The accuracy and convergence rate of the RMVT-based FLMs are assessed by comparing their solutions with the exact 3D piezoelectricity ones available in the literature.

  • Filter cake formation during rotary drilling operation is an unavoidable scenario, hence there is need for constant improvement in the approaches used in monitoring the cake thickness growth in order to prevent drill-string sticking. This study proposes an improved model that predicts the growth of mud cake thickness overtime with the consideration of the addition of nanoparticles in the formulated drilling fluid system. Ferric oxide, titanium dioxide and copper oxide nanoparticles were used in varying amounts (2 g, 4 g and 6 g), and filtration data were obtained from the HPHT filtration test. The filter cakes formed were further analyzed with scanning electron microscope to obtain the morphological characteristics. The data obtained was used to validate the new filtrate loss model. This model specifically presents the concept of time variation in filter cake formation as against the previous works of constant and definite time. Regression coefficient which is a statistical measure was used to validate the new model and the predicted results were compared with the API model. The new model showed R2 values of 99.9%, and the predictions from the proposed filtration model can be said to be more closely related to the experimental data than that predicted from the API model from the SSE and RMSE results.

  • As an alternative to the W plug used in MOSFETs, a Cu plug with a NiSi contact using Ta / TaN as a diffusion barrier is currently being considered. Conventionally, Ni was first deposited and then NiSi was formed, followed by the barrier and Cu deposition. In this study, Ti was employed as a barrier material and simultaneous formation of the NiSi contact and Cu plug / Ti barrier was attempted. Cu(100 nm) / Ti / Ni(20 nm) with varying Ti thicknesses were deposited on a Si substrate and annealed at $4000^{\circ}C$ for 30 min. For comparison, Cu/Ti/NiSi thin films were also formed by the conventional method. Optical Microscopy (OM), Scanning Probe Microscopy (SPM), X-Ray Diffractometry (XRD), and Auger Electron Microscopy (AES) analysis were performed to characterize the inter-diffusion properties. For a Ti interlayer thicker than 50 nm, the NiSi formation was incomplete, although Cu diffusion was inhibited by the Ti barrier. For a Ti thickness of 20 nm and less, an almost stoichiometric NiSi contact along with the Cu plug and Ti barrier layers was formed. The results were comparable to that formed by the conventional method and showed that this alternative process has potential as a formation process for the Cu plug/Ti barrier/NiSi contact system.

  • This paper describes the effect of various conditions of the ribs on the breakdown characteristics when metal particle is attached to the spacer in GIS. More improved spacer shape in breakdown characteristics than conventional one is proposed by comparing the results acquired by varying location, length and thickness of the ribbed spacer. As a result, it was found that the electrical breakdown characteristics of the spacer with two ribs were generally better than that with only one rib or no ribs, and it was dependent on the rib length and rib thickness. Especially, it was also confirmed that the electrical breakdown characteristics were more improved by rounding the rib edge.

  • Hg-Te-CdTe superlattices have received much interests over the last several years as a potential material for its applications for detecting devices and optoelectronics. We have grown the HgTe-CdTe superlattice using MBE. in our lab. We have carried out DCRC spectroscopy after growth of HgTe-CdTe superlattice with varying the superlattice periods and controlling the barrier thickness and we have that the presence of the main peak and the satellite peaks. We obtained 20 arcsec of FWHM over 100 periods of superlattice. We also note that high peak intensity shows the high quality of the sample and each layer of superlattice has abrupt interfaces. The angular separation between the main peak(m=0) and the first satellite peak(m=$\pm$1) is increased when the barrier layer thickness in superlatice layers are decreased. The separation between the first setellite peak(m=$\pm$1) and the second satellite peak(m$\pm$2) is increased similarly. The number of the satellite peak is a qualitative measure of the interfacial abruptness of the superlattice.

  • In this paper, the system for detection of photoacoustic signal has been constructed by using CW $CO_{2}$ laser for an analysis of the photoacoustic signal In metals and aluminum carbon steel, brass have been used as sample. The photoacoustic signals of several nano amperes have been detected in each sample with varying modulation frequency of laser, time constant of lock-in amplifier, thickness of sample. The characteristics of photoacoustic signal has been analysed in term of phase angle by using signal processing technique. Results indicate that the photoacoustic signal can be stabilized by adjustment of time constant of lock-in amplifier, that the signal amplitude is proportional to the ratio of thermal expansion coefficient to thermal capacity of metal, and that the signal amplitude decreases exponentially with sample thickness as well as with modulation frequency.
