  • The cyclic plate load test were peformed to determine the behavior of reinforced soft ground with multiple layers of geogrid. Five series of test were conducted with varying the soil profile conditions which including the ground level, type of soil, and the thickness of each soil layer. The plate load test equipment was slightly modified to apply the cyclic load. Based on the cyclic plate load test results, the bearing capacity ratio(BCR), subbase modules, shear modules, the elastic rebound ratio, and reinforcing parameters are presented.

  • In order to analyze the behavior of piled abutment adjacent to surcharge loads a numerical study was conducted. In 2D plane stalin analysis, the distribution of lateral soil movement was investigated by varying the thickness of clay layer and the magnitude of surcharge loads. In 3D analysis, the magnitude and distribution of lateral pile-soil movement were studied for different cap rigidity. Based on limited parametric studies, a simple method is proposed to identify the lateral pressure of piled abutment adjacent to surcharge loads.

  • Three series of 36 short circular columns confined by wraps, full shells and partial shells were tested by varying the thickness of GFRP laminates. An assessment of the effectiveness of the existing models on confinement of concrete columns with FRP was made for present tests. Test results indicated significant increases in strength and deformability compared with those in unconfined concrete, particularly warp and full shell confinement. Existing predictive equations for peak strength and strain of confined concrete showed a large scatter and varied considerably, resulting from the realistic fracture strains of FRP nor considered.

  • An ultrasonic linear motor was composed of a slider and a stator vibrator including piezoelectric material and elastic material. The ultrasonic linear motors mainly consist of an ultrasonic oscillator which generates elliptical oscillations. Elliptical oscillations are generated by synthesizing two degenerated modes. The design of a stator for an Ultrasonic linear motor was optimized with respect to vibration mode and direction of vibratory displacement by employing the finite element method. The motors were designed by varying the width of stator vibrator and the thickness, the length and the position of piezoceramics.

  • The differential equations governing in-plane free vibrations of stepped circular arcs, including the effects of axial deformation, rotatory inertia and shear deformation, are derived and solved numerically to obtain frequencies and mode shapes. Numerical results are calculated for the clamped-clamped symmetric and unsymmetric circular arcs with thickness varying in a discontinuous fashion. The lowest four natural frequencies and mode shapes are presented over a range of non-dimensional system parameters: the subtended angle, the slenderness ratio, the section ratio and the ratio of discontinuous section.

  • The present paper deals with the optimum design of reinforced concrete cylindrical shell tanks in according to ACI 318-89 code. The purpose of this investigation is to find the optimum values of the steel ratio and the effective thickness of reinforced concrete cylindrical shell tanks. The analysts is carried out using a simple computer programming, SMAP(segmented matrix analysis package). The optimization is carried out using GINO programming. Optimum results for cylindrical shell tanks with uniform, stepwise and piecewise linealy varying thicknesses are presented.

  • Silty tidal rhythmites were found from the upper Pleistocene sequence unconformably overlain by the Holocene tidal deposits within the macrotidal coastal zone of Youngjong Island, western coast of Korea. The rhythmites occur as vertically accreted, parallel and planar laminae that are 0.1-2.5 mm in thickness. Each lamina grades from coarse silt (mean grain size: 5-6.5 ${\phi}$) at the lower part into fine silt to mud (mean grain size: 6-7.5 ${\phi}$) at the upper part. The rhythmites can be classified into two types based on the patterns in laminar thickness variation. Type I is a bundle of 12-20 laminae in which laminar thickness varies sinusoidally. Type ll is an alternation of thick and thin laminae as a couplet. Type I is inferred as a product of varying tidal energy during a semimonthly (neap-spring) tidal cycle, in which thicker laminae were deposited during spring tides and thinner laminae were formed during neap tides. Type ll is interpreted to have been formed by asymmetric semidiurnal tidal currents in association with diurnal inequality, whereby thick lamina of each couplet represents dominant tidal current and the thin lamina reflects subordinate tidal current.

  • A two new high-order shear deformation theory for bending analysis is presented for a simply supported, functionally graded plate with porosities resting on an elastic foundation. This porosities may possibly occur inside the functionally graded materials (FGMs) during their fabrication, while material properties varying to a simple power-law distribution along the thickness direction. Unlike other theories, there are only four unknown functions involved, as compared to five in other shear deformation theories. The theories presented are variationally consistent and strongly similar to the classical plate theory in many aspects. It does not require the shear correction factor, and gives rise to the transverse shear stress variation so that the transverse shear stresses vary parabolically across the thickness to satisfy free surface conditions for the shear stress. It is established that the volume fraction of porosity significantly affect the mechanical behavior of thick function ally graded plates. The validity of the two new theories is shown by comparing the present results with other higher-order theories. The influence of material parameter, the volume fraction of porosity and the thickness ratio on the behavior mechanical P-FGM plate are represented by numerical examples.
