AISI 4140 steel is widely used in various mechanical components owing to its superior mechanical properties. Surface hardening techniques are often used to further improve the properties, particularly for applications with moving components. The aim of this research is to understand the effect of heat treatment process on surface properties and tribological characteristics of AISI 4140 steel. In this work, we prepare two different AISI 4140 steel specimens- one cooled by air and one by oil- and determine surface properties such as surface topography and roughness using a confocal microscope. We also observe the cross-sections of the specimens using a scanning electron microscope to understand the difference in the material structure. In addition, we assess the hardness with respect to the distance from the surface using a micro-Vickers hardness tester. After characterizing the surfaces of the specimens, we investigate the wear characteristics of the specimens under hydrodynamic lubrication. The results show the presence of grooves on the surface of the oil-cooled specimens. It is likely that such grooves are formed during the cooling process using the oil. However, we observe no other significant differences in the surface properties of the specimens. The wear test results show the occurrence of severe wear on the oil-cooled specimens, which may be due to the groove formed on the surface. The results of this work may be helpful to improve surface properties using surface hardening techniques from a tribological perspective.

In recent bridge design, studies on application of external prestress have actively been conducted. When prestress is applied to steel structures, the limit value of elastic strain with large load increases with reduction of steels, this method is economic in cost. According to study by Brodka (1969), steel plate bridges with prestress has an effect on cost saving of about 15% compared with structures without prestress. For that reason, our country recently adopted this method in construction of temporary bridges and various engineering technologies have been developed which made stress correction, droop correction and long-span construction possible with relatively small cross sections. This study verifies the method of application of prestress in temporary steel structures, the influence of high-strength tendon arrangement and the effects of composite structures of steel plates and high-strength tendons based on existing method.

This paper presents the details of a novel external prestressing technique for strengthening of concrete members. In the proposed technique, transfer of external force is in shear mode on the end block thus creating a complex stress distribution and the required transverse prestressing force is lesser compared to conventional techniques. Steel brackets are provided on either side of the end block for transferring external prestressing force and these are connected to the anchor blocks by expansion type anchor bolts. In order to validate the technique, an experimental investigation has been carried out on post-tensioned end blocks. Performance of the end blocks have been studied for design, cracking and ultimate loads. Slip and slope of steel bracket have been recorded at various stages during the experiment. Finite element analysis has been carried out by simulating the test conditions and the responses have been compared. From the analysis, it has been observed that the computed slope and slip of the steel bracket are in good agreement with the corresponding experimental observations. A simplified analytical model has been proposed to compute load-deformation of the loaded steel bracket with respect to the end block. Yield and ultimate loads have been arrived at based on force/moment equilibrium equations at critical sections. Deformation analysis has been carried out based on the assumption that the ratio of axial deformation to vertical deformation of anchor bolt would follow the same ratio at the corresponding forces such as yield and ultimate. It is observed that the computed forces, slip and slopes are in good agreement with the corresponding experimental observations.
In this study, cyclic loading tests were conducted to assess the seismic performance of cast-in-place (CIP) concrete-filled hollow core precast concrete columns (HPCC) constructed using steel ducts and rubber tubes. The outer shells of HPCC, with a hollow ratio of 47%, were fabricated using steel ducts and rubber tubes, respectively. Two combinations of shear studs & long threaded bars or cross-deformed bars & V-ties were employed to ensure the structural integrity of the old concrete (outer shell) and new CIP concrete. Up to a drift ratio of 3.8%, the hysteresis loop, yielding stiffness, dissipated energy, and equivalent damping ratio of the HPCC specimens were largely comparable to those of the solid columns. Besides the similarities in cyclic load-displacement responses, the strain history of the longitudinal bars and the transverse confinement of the three specimens also exhibited similar patterns. The measured maximum moment exceeded the predicted moment according to ACI 318 by more than 1.03 times. However, the load reduction of the HPCC specimen after reaching peak strength was marginally greater than that of the solid specimen. The energy dissipation and equivalent damping ratios of the HPCC specimens were 20% and 25% lower than those of the solid specimen, respectively. Taking into account the overall results, the structural behavior of HPCC specimens fabricated using steel ducts and rubber tubes is deemed comparable to that of solid columns. Furthermore, it was confirmed that the two combinations for securing structural integrity functioned as expected, and that rubber air-tubes can be effectively used to create well-shaped hollow sections.

This work presents an optimality criteria method applicable io the design of plane frames with I-shape sections. All kinds of constraints are treated properly to ensure the mathematical rigour of the method as ever. Among the various properties of a section, the cross-sectional area is chosen as the design variable associated with the member. Then other properties, moment of inertia and depth, are determined from the cross-sectional area using relationships established in advance from the sectional data for AISC standard W shapes. The optimality criteria established in this work is perfect in mathematical terms provided that the relationships between properties of a section are correct. A redesign algorithm is derived relying heavily on the Newton-Raphson method to solve the system of nonlinear constraint equations. A worked example is also Presented.

Large-scale model tests of welded tubular K-joints were carried out to observe the fatigue behavior of API 2W Gr.50 steel produced by POSCO. The fatigue crack behaviors for various loading conditions were measured and investigated around the critical joint sections. The experimental results have been verified with numerical approaches and also compared with the IIW, DnV RP-C203 and API RP 2A-WSD design curves. The hot spot strss method was applied in the study. The SCF factor for tubular K-joint was also obtained.

The structural behavior of welded steel box columns subjected to axial compression and combined load of axial and horizontal load is described. The nonlinear stress-strain relation of the material and residual stress resulted from welds were included in the analysis. Inelastic buckling analysis of hollow rectangular sections of various width-thickness and slenderness ratios was carried out using the semi-analytical and spline finite strip method to investigate the local and global bucking stress and mode interaction. The buckling stress was compared with test results and design curves. Post-buckling behavior was traced by the finite element program(ADINA) and compared with experimental results. The comparison showed that the ultimate stress can be used for the design purpose.

Plate girder bridges for tile Korean high-speed railway are optimally designed. Static and dynamic constraints are all considered. The design variables are the thicknesses and the lengths of the plates that are used to form I-shaped main girders with variable cross-sections. And the objective function is tile steel weight of a main girder. A C++ based design program is developed; this program interfaces with a FORTRAN based optimization program ADS. From the results of optimal design for various span lengths, it is observed that the deck vertical acceleration is one of the most important constraints in a special range of tile span length. Front a parametric study, sensitivity of the optimal design to static as well as dynamic constraints are presented.
When vehicles pass the connection between the bridge and earthwork, the difference of both sections' stiffness produces an increasing wheelload. As a consequence, it results in the excessive vibration of vehicles and the damage of bearing system. In general, steel plate girder railway bridges without ballast track have larger stiffness than the bridge with ballast, and produces larger impulse on the bridge superstructure. Thus, it is necessary to reduce the differences of both stiffness. This study presents parametric studies on the behavior of plate girder bridges and their tracks by means of various stiffnesses and the length of approach zone. The results of numerical study showed that the smaller the stiffness of both sides and the longer the length of approach zone, the variation of wheelload becomes smaller. Hence, it gives less burden into the plate girder bridges and their tracks. It is expected that the results of parametric study can be used as a preliminary data for the determination of economical length on the approach zone and the stiffness of both sides.

Related to the previous paper on the typical crack pattern of tunnel lining with NATM, the characteristic defects in reinforced cement concrete lining of NATM tunnel have analyzed with the precise inspection with safety and diagnosis (PISD) by KISTEC. Depending on the reinforcing materials, steel rebar, steel fiber, and glass fiber have been implemented to reinforcing lining in various NATM tunnel constructions. Reinforcing lining with rebar are prevailed on NATM tunnel to countermeasure the weak geological circumstances, to pursuit the economical tunnel sections, and to resist the risk of tunnel deterioration. By the special act on the safety control of public facilities, the reinforced NATM tunnels for more than 1 km length are scrutinized closely to characterize defects; crack, reinforcement exposure, and lack of lining. Crack resistance by reinforcing is shown in comparison with the normalized crack to the length of tunnel. Typical exposed reinforcements in lining have exemplified with various sections. The lack of lining due to the mal-construction, spalling, fire, earthquake and leaching has been analyzed. The cause and mechanism with the field inspections and other studies has also been verified. Detailed cases are selected by the above concerns as well as the basic information from FMS (Facilities Management System). Likewise the previous paper, this study provides specialized defects in reinforced lining of NATM and it can be widely used in spreading the essential technics and reporting skills. Furthermore, it would be advised and amended for the detail guideline of Safety Diagnosis and PISD (tunnel).
