  • Flow input from the basin will not remain the same as before due to climate changes. Since the predictions on river discharge due to climate change is given by scenarios, various discharge scenarios were prepared in this study. For a long term and reach prediction, semi-two dimensional sediment transport model, GSTARS, was used. The flood water surface elevations predicted by GSTARS model were analysed statistically and it was concluded that the model is applicable for the South Han River. Three stream tubes is the most suitable to simulate two dimensional river geometric change River geometric changes. For sediment load computation, Ackers and White equation and Yang equation were resonable. River will become narrower regardless of discharge variation, more discharge results in deeper channel.

  • Objectives : To assess whether the risk-adjusted in-hospital mortality rates for non-emergent and isolated coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG) patients exhibited a consistent trend from 2001 to 2003. Methods : The data used in this study came from CABG claims that were submitted to a Korean Health Insurance Review Agency (HIRA) in 2001, 2002, and 2003. Study datasets included data from 17 tertiary hospitals, which had at least 25 claims each year over 3 years. The inter-hospital differences in patients' risk-factors were identified and controlled in the risk-adjustment model. Actual and predicted mortality rates for each hospital were calculated in 2001, 2002, 2003, and 2001+2002, and were then examined to identify consistent rate patterns over time. Kappa analysis was applied to assess the agreements between rates. Results : Hospitals with lower-than-expected inpatient mortality rates showed more consistent rates than those with higher-than-expected mortality rates. The mortality rates that were calculated based on data obtained over multiple years had less variation among hospitals than rates based on single year data. Based on the Kappa score, the highest agreement was found when the rates were compared between the 2-year combined data (2001+2002) and 2003. Conclusions : Consistent patterns over 3 years were most evident for hospitals which had lower-than expected mortality rates. Policy makers can use this information to identify the degree of outcomes in hospitals and help motivate or channel the behaviors of providers.

  • Numerous operational anomalies and satellite failures have been reported since the beginnings of the "space age". Space weather effects on modern spacecraft systems have been emphasized more and more as increasing their complexity and capability. Energetic particles potentially can destroy and degrade electronic components in satellites. We analyzed the geostationary (GEO) satellite anomalies during 1997-2009 to search possible influences of space weather on the satellite anomalies like power problem, control processor problem, attitude control problem, etc. For this we use particle data from GOES and LANL satellites to investigate space weather effects on the GEO satellites' anomalies depending on Kp index, local time, seasonal variation, and high-energy electron contribution. As results, we obtained following results: (1) there is a good correlation between geomagnetic index(Kp) and anomaly occurrences of the GEO satellite; (2) especially during the solar minimum, occurrence of the satellite anomalies are related to electron flux increase due to high speed solar wind; (3) satellite anomalies occurred more preferentially in the midnight and dawn sector than noon and dusk sector; (4) and the anomalies occurred twice more in Spring and Fall than Summer and Winter; (5) the electron with the lowest energy channel (50-75keV) has the highest correlation (cc=0.758) with the anomalies. High association between the anomalies and the low energy electrons could be understand by the facts that electron fluxes in the spring and fall are stronger than those in the summer and winter, and low-energy electron flux is more concentrated in the dawn sector where the GEO satellite anomalies occurred more frequently than high-energy electron flux. While we could not identify what cause such local time dependences, our results shows that low-energy electrons (~100keV) could be main source of the satellite anomaly, which should be carefully taken into account of operating satellites.

  • This paper presents a quasi-steady model for numerical simulations of reservoir sedimentation and reservoir flushing. The quasi-steady model is based on the assumption that the flow is steady with time-dependent stream morphology change. This is reasonable because stream morphology changes over a long period, while the flow changes rapidly. The proposed model is first applied to two laboratory experiments for reservoir sedimentation. The channel is shown to be adjusted to new sediment supply at the upstream by changing both the flow depth and slope. Simulated water surface and bed profiles compare favorably to measured data. The model is also applied to reservoir flushing. Good agreement between simulated and measured data is not obtained due to time variation of outflow generated to facilitate the flushing in the experiment. Finally, relationships for equilibrium flow depth and bed slope are proposed and tested through numerical experiments.

  • OFDM system is very useful for the multi-path channel and highly bandwidth-efficient system. However, OFDM signal shows the high PAPR so that nonlinear distortion can happen in the HPA(high power amplifier). This paper studies BER performance variation according to IBO(input back off) values when the predistorter is used fur the compensation for the HPA nonlinearity. In case of the SSPA(solid state power amplifier) of nonlinearity parameter p=0.5 and IBO=0㏈, the system with predistorter is poorer than the one without predistorter. But this situation is inverted, if IBO is increased from 0㏈ to 3㏈. So, we can find that there is a threshold value of IBO for the predistorter to effectively compensate for the nonlinear SSPA when the sub-carrier number and p value are changed.

  • Using a solution of $^{137}$ Cs as a tracer, radioactivity of a $^{137}$ Cs solution is measured by coincidence and anticoincidence counting methods. Sample sources in this study are fabricated by mixing $^{137}$ Cs with tracer, and the mixing ratios are 1/3 and 1/5, respectively in coincidence and anticoincidence methods. Specific activities of a $^{137}$ Cs solution are calculated by means of f-channel low energy threshold level variation and efficiency extrapolation. The results obtained by coincidence and anticoincidence counting methods are 552.78 kBq/g and 554.32kBq/g, respectively on the reference date and the combined uncertainties are 1.60kBq/g and 1.51kBq/g for each method. These two results show a good agreement within the uncertainty range.

  • This paper propose a new frame level rate control algorithm for improving video quality and decreasing quality variation of an entire video sequence in a very low bit rate environment. In the proposed scheme, the allocated bits to a GOP are distributed to each frame properly according to the frame characteristics as well as the buffer status and the channel bandwidth. The H.264 standard uses various coding modes and optimization methods to improve the compression performance, which makes it difficult to control the generated traffic accurately. In this paper, proper prediction models for low bit rate environments are lust proposed, and a target distortion is determined using the models. According to the target distortion, the bit budget is allocated to each frame. It is shown by experimental results that the new algorithm can generate the PSNR performance better than that of the existing rate control algorithm.

  • Phase coherent modulation techniques in underwater acoustic channel can improve bandwidth efficiency and data reliability, but they are made difficult by time-varying intersymbol interference. This paper proposes an adaptive equalizer combined with phase estimator which compensates distortions caused by time-varying multipath and phase variation. The experiment in the East sea demonstrates phase coherent signals are distorted by time-varying multipath propagation and the proposed scheme equalizes them. Bit error rate of BPSK and QPSK are 0.0078 and 0.0376 at 300 meter horizontal distance and 0.0146 and 0.0293 at 1000 meter respectively.

  • In this experimental research, the maximum scour depth at pier was studied. The model of the pier of San Gye bridge in the Bocheong stream was set for experimental pier scour studies. Several model verification processes were conducted through the roughness comparisons between model and prototype, pursuring scour depth variations with time depending upon channel bed variation, the comparison of the ratio between falling velocities and shear velocities in the model and prototype, and the comparison of pier scour between experimental data and field measuring data. The experiments were conducted in the free flow conditions and pressure flow conditions. The maximum scour depth at piers in the pressure flow conditions is twice as much as compared to the free flow conditions. Also, the maximum scour depth variations are indicated in the figures based on the Froude numbers, opening ratios, water depths and approaching angles in the free surface flow conditions.

  • We improved the Land Surface Emissivity (LSE) data (Kongju National University LSE v.2: KNULSE_v2) over the Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite (COMS) observation region using recent(2009-2012) Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data. The surface emissivity was derived using the Vegetation Cover Method (VCM) based on the assumption that the pixel is only composed of ground and vegetation. The main issues addressed in this study are as follows: 1) the impacts of snow cover are included using Normalized Difference Snow Index (NDSI) data, 2) the number of channels is extended from two (11, 12 ${\mu}m$) to four channels (3.7, 8.7, 11, 12 ${\mu}m$), 3) the land cover map data is also updated using the optimized remapping of the five state-of-the-art land cover maps, and 4) the latest look-up table for the emissivity of land surface according to the land cover is used. The updated emissivity data showed a strong seasonal variation with high and low values for the summer and winter, respectively. However, the surface emissivity over the desert or evergreen tree areas showed a relatively weak seasonal variation irrespective of the channels. The snow cover generally increases the emissivity of 3.7, 8.7, and 11 ${\mu}m$ but decreases that of 12 ${\mu}m$. As the results show, the pattern correlation between the updated emissivity data and the MODIS LSE data is clearly increased for the winter season, in particular, the 11 ${\mu}m$. However, the differences between the two emissivity data are slightly increased with a maximum increase in the 3.7 ${\mu}m$. The emissivity data updated in this study can be used for the improvement of accuracy of land surface temperature derived from the infrared channel data of COMS.
