  • Reliability demonstration tests (RDT's) are widely employed in design verification and process validation stages of industry. New mixed attribute-variable RDT plans that compromise demerits of the corresponding zero and zero or one failure plans which are common in practice are developed for the exponential distribution. The proposed mixed plans are compared with the typical RDT plans in terms of probability of acceptance and expected test termination time. A numerical example is provided to illustrate the mixed plans and a procedure to extend these plans to the Weibull distribution with known shape parameter is also presented.

  • This paper is concerned with the structural optimization problem of maximizing the compressive buckling load of orthotropic rectangular plates for a given volume of material. The optimality condition is first derived via variational calculus. It states that the thickness distribution is proportional to the strain energy density contrary to popular claims of constant strain energy density at the optimum. An engineers physical meaning of the optimality condition would be to make the average strain energy density with respect to the depth a constant. A double cosine thickness varying plate and a double sine thickness varying plate are then fine tuned in a one parameter optimization using the Rayleigh-Ritz method of analysis. Results for simply supported square plates indicate an increase of 89% in capacity for an orthotropic plate having 100% of its fibers in $0^{\circ}$ direction.

  • A genetic algorithm was applied to an arc welding process to determine near optimal settings of welding process parameters which produce good weld quality. This method searches for optimal settings of welding parameters through systematic experiments without a model between input and output variables. It has an advantage of being able to find optimal conditions with a fewer number of experiments than conventional full factorial design. A genetic algorithm was applied to optimization of weld bead geometry. In the optimization problem, the input variables was wire feed rate, welding voltage, and welding speed and the output variables were bead height, bead width, and penetration. The number of level for each input variable is 16, 16, and 8, respectively. Therefore, according to the conventional full factorial design, in order to find the optimal welding conditions, 2048 experiments must be performed. The genetic algorithm, however, found the near optimal welding conditions from less than 40 experiments.

  • Not only in building design but also in HVAC system design, it is important to ensure an objectivity in schematic design. In the study, the author suggested a method to make a logical decision for quality design factors a(footing the selection of HVAC type in initial design process, and to provide objective design values. Fuzzy theory, one of the theories describing in quantitative way the ambiguous-natured linguistic values, was used to determine the qualitative design factors of linguistic parameter nature. It was found that it has a potential as a method to determine a HVAC type satisfying the required values of qualitative design factors involved in selection of the system type. But this needs further studies to be settled in the selecting of HVAC type.

  • This paper shows the analysis of the inductive power transfer system in conjunction with series resonant converter operating variable high frequency. Of particular interest is the sensitivity of the complete system to variations in operational frequency and parameters. In inductive power transfer system, electrical power is transferred from a primary winding in the form of a coil or track, to one or more isolated pick-up coils that may relative to the primary. The ability to transmit power without contact enables high reliability and easy maintenance that allows inductive power transfer system to be implemented in hostile environments. This technology has found application in many fields such as electric vehicles, PRT(Personal Rapid Transit) etc. The coupling between the primary and secondary is then presented to include the effects of parameter and operational frequency variation.

  • An improved linear matrix inequality (LMI) representation of delay-independent $H_2$ performance analysis is introduced for linear delay systems with delays of any size. Based on this representation we propose a new $H_2$ memoryless state feedback design. By introducing a new matrix variable, the new LMI formulation enables us to parameterize memoryles s controllers without involving the Lyapunov variables in the formulations. By using a parameter-dependent Lyapunov function, this new representation proposed here provides us the results with less conservatism.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the causal correlation between communication skill of organization and their job performance. In our model, we used these variables - innovation awareness, job satisfaction, organizational commitment as a parameter. In order to verify the hypothesis based on research model, a survey among researchers (sample size=117) who work in food company was carried out. Analyzing hypothesized model and following the statistical procedure, we could assure that there exist positive correlation with communication skill, innovation awareness, job satisfaction, organizational commitment and organizational performance. A coefficient of correlation between those variables was clearly high in the group with good communication skill. Among the parameters, the variable of innovation awareness was more effected on their job performance.

  • A hybrid fuzzy controller by means of the genetic algorithms is presented. The control input for the system in the HFC is a convex combination of the FLC's output in transient state and PlD's output in steady state by a fuzzy variable. The HFC combined a PID controller with a fuzzy controller concurrently produces the better output performance than any other controller. A auto-tuning algorithms is presented to automatically improve the performance of hybrid fuzzy controller using genetic algorithms. The algorithms estimates automatical Iy the optimal values of scaling factors, PID parameters and membership function parameters of fuzzy control rules. Especially, in order to auto-tune scaling factors and PID parameters of HFC using GA three kinds of estimation modes are effectively utilized. The HFCs are applied to the second process with time-delay. Computer simulations are conducted at step input and the performances of systems are evaluated and also discussed in ITAE(Integral of the Time multiplied by the Absolute value of Error ) and other ways.

  • We discuss simulation results concerning the performance of the TCP protocol when running over high-speed HFC networks. Hybrid Fiber Coaxial are likely to provide fast and cost effective sup-port to a variety of applications including Video on demand, interactive computer games, and internet-type applications such as Webbrowsing, ftp, and telephony. Since most of these applications, use TCP as the transport later protocol, the key to their success largely depends on the effectiveness of the TCP protocol. In all simulation scenarios the TCP traffic is maxed with some background traffic whose level is taken as a variable parameter. Both the background traffic and TCP traffic are either unshaped, or shaped according to the GCRA algorithm. The effect of the background traffic on the TCP protocol performance is discussed varying the buffering capacity with nodes as well as the peak bit rate that each TCP connection is allowed to use.

  • This paper examined the probabilistic load analysis for the tailplane during pitching maneuvering in the conceptual aircraft design phase. The flight load analysis based on the probabilistic distribution of design variables are compared with the results of the deterministic analysis. Two forms of variable distribution are used in this paper. One is standard normal distribution, the other distribution is calculated from the results of short-period longitudinal equation of aircraft motion. The influence of the distribution parameter on the probabilistic load analysis was investigated and the significant design variables that have an impact on the mean and variance of probabilistic load were identified. The comparison indicates that probabilistic load analysis provides more reliable probabilistic load distribution for the structural design than the traditional deterministic analysis.
