Hydroforming of a non-axisymmetric thin-walled tubular component with variable cross sections was analyzed. In order to solve the sealing problem which occurred due to the thin and non-axisymmetric shape, the use of a lead patch on the punch, which had been successful in hydroforming of thin tubes, was evaluated. A lead patch was attached to the punch to solve the sealing problem, which was caused by the stress gradient in the non-axisymmetric shape. FEM and experiments were also performed to analyze these sealing problems associated with the punch shape and non-axisymmetric shape. Finally, the lead patch was attached at tube surface where intensive local strain concentration would occur to enhance the hydroformability. These methods were successfully used to fabricate non-axisymmetric thin-walled tubular component with variable cross sections that had previously failed during traditional hydroforming.
The differential equations governing free, in-plane vibrations of linearly elastic circular arches with variable cross-sections are derived and solve numerically for quadratic arches with three types of rectangular cross sections. Frequencies, mode shapes, cross-sectional load distributions, and the effects of rotatory inertia on frequencies are reported. Experimental measurements of frequencies and their corresponding mode shapes agree closely with those predicted by theory. The numerical methods presented here for computing frequencies and mode shapes are efficient and reliable.

Effective length factor approach for framed column design has long played an important design-aid role. This approach, however, is effective only when the columns are in the form of prismatic or uniform cross sections. Structural engineers who have to design or analyse framed columns with variable cross sections need some means to do their job. By using the finite element method, the stability analysis of the isolated compression members with variable cross sections and that of the framed columns are performed. The parameters considered in the stability analysis are taper and sectional property parameters of the columns, the second moment of inertia ratio of beam to column, and beam span to column height ratio. On the basis of the stability analysis results, effective length factor formulas for the columns with variable sections are derived.

when one is designing a continuous bridge with variable cross sections, it is very troublesome to integrate explicitly load terms and various factor under consideration so that it has different moment of inertia at each cross section. In this paper to obtain the influence line of a arbitary-span continuous beam with variable cross sections, the value of some particular function due to a load at any point can be carried out by numerical integration instead of definite integral. The ordinate of the influence line equals the product of the magnitude of the final moment at each support due to unit moment at any support and the load terms due to unit load, measured at the point of application of the load. It is concluded that this method can be easily used to design continuous bridges with arbitary cross sections.
A macroscopic cross section generation model was developed for the conceptual horizontal, compact high temperature gas reactor (HC-HTGR). Because there are many sources of spectral effects in the design and analysis of the core, conventional LWR methods have limitations for accurate simulation of the HC-HTGR using a neutron diffusion core neutronics simulator. Several super-cell model configurations were investigated to consider the spectral effect of neighboring cells. A new history variable was introduced for the existing library format to more accurately account for the history effect from neighboring nodes and reactivity control drums. The macroscopic cross section library was validated through comparison with cross sections generated using full core Monte Carlo models and single cell cross section for both 3D core steady-state problems and 2D and 3D depletion problems. Core calculations were then performed with the AGREE HTR neutronics and thermal-fluid core simulator using super-cell cross sections. With the new history variable, the super-cell cross sections were in good agreement with the full core cross sections even for problems with significant spectrum change during fuel shuffling and depletion.
The use of roll-formed products increases every year due to its advantages, such as high production rates, reduced tooling cost and improved quality. However, till now, it is limited to part profiles with constant cross section. In recent years, the flexible roll forming process, which allows variable cross sections of profiles by adaptive roll stands, was developed. In this study, an attempt to optimize profile design for the flexible roll forming process was performed. An equation that predicts the longitudinal strain for part geometries with variable cross-sections was proposed. The relationship between geometrical parameters and the longitudinal strain was analyzed and investigations on the optimal profile design were performed. Experiments were conducted with a lab-scale roll forming machine to validate the proposed equation. The results show that the profile design method proposed in this study is feasible and parts with variable cross sections can be successfully fabricated with the flexible roll forming process.

We measured the electron transport coefficients, the electron drift velocity, W, and the longitudinal diffusion coefficient, $D_{L}$, over the E/N range from 0.03 to 100 Td and gas pressure range from 0.133 to 122 kPa in the 0.526% and 5.05% $C_{3}F_{8}$-Ar mixtures by the double shutter drift tube with variable drift distance. And we calculated these electron transport coefficients by using multi-term approximation of Boltzmann equation analysis. We determined the electron collision cross sections set for $C_{3}F_{8}$ molecule by the comparison of measurement and calculation. Our special attention in the present study was focused upon the inelastic collision cross sections of the $C_{3}F_{8}$ molecule.

The electron drift velocity W and the product of the longitudinal diffusion coefficient and the gas number density $ND_{L}$ in the $0.525\;\%$ and $5.05\;\%$$C_{3}F_8-Ar$ mixtures were measured by using the double shutter drift tube with variable drift distance over the E/N range from 0.03 to 100 Td and gas pressure range from 1 to 915 torr. And we determined the electron collision cross sections set for the $C_{3}F_8$ molecule by STEP 1 of electron swarm method using a multi-term Boltzmann equation analysis. Our special attention in the present study was focused upon the vibrational excitation and new excitations cross sections of the $C_{3}F_8$ molecule.

Flexible roll forming allows profiles to have variable cross-sections. However, the profile may have some shape errors, such as, warping which is a major defect. The shape error is induced by geometrical deviations in both the concave zone and the convex zone. In the current study, flexible roll forming was modeled with FE simulations to analyze the shape error and the longitudinal strain distribution along the flange section over the profile. A distribution of analytically calculated longitudinal strains was used to develop relationships between the shape error and the longitudinal strain distribution as a function of the defined shape parameters for the profile. The FE simulations showed that the shape error is primarily affected by the deviations between the distribution of analytically calculated longitudinal strain and the longitudinal strain distribution of the profile. The results show that the shape error can be controlled by designing the shape parameters to control the geometrical deviations at the flange section in the transition zones.
In this paper, a semi-analytical method will be discussed for free vibration analysis of rotating beams with variable cross sectional area. For this purpose, the rotating beam is discretized through applying the transfer matrix method and assumed the axial force is constant for each element. Then, the transfer matrix is derived based on Euler-Bernoulli's beam differential equation and applying boundary conditions. In the following, the frequencies of the rotating beam with constant and variable cross sections are determined using the transfer matrix method in several case studies. In order to eliminate numerical difficulties in the transfer matrix method, the Riccati transfer matrix is employed for high rotation speed and high modes. The results are compared with the results of the finite elements method and Rayleigh-Ritz method which show good agreement in spite of low computational cost.
