  • The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of parent-child relationship perceived by university students on value of marriage and partner selection criteria. Questionnaires were distributed to 467 university students with questions covering topics including general personal information and characteristics, parent-child relationship, value of marriage and partner selection criteria. To analysis the data, t-test, ANOVA, and two step cluster analysis was used. The female group A with passive parent-child relationship had high level of negative value of marriage, male group D with active parent-child relationship had high level of romantic and instrumental value of marriage. The male and female passive group considered external condition as a partner selection criteria more than male and female active group does. As a partner selection criteria, passive male group recognized internal condition more than passive and active female group does. and active female group recognized situational condition more than passive male group does. This study reveals that university students' parent-child relationship does have an effect on their value of marriage and partner selection criteria. It is therefore proposed that diversify objectives and education content of family life education should relate not only to individuals' value of marriage but also to their parent-child relationship.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the value of children in South and North Korea and to identify the similarities and differences in value orientations related to children and curriculum in child-care and education. The secondary data including 2013 research report on the South Korean consciousness and values, the Familial Law Act and the Child Welfare Act of South Korea, the Familial Law Act and the Law of Nursing and Upbringing of Children in North Korea, and a series of Choson-yeosung magazines in North Korea were analyzed. Results showed that first, it was common that both of social and psychological values of children were found, but the psychological values were more prevalent in the South and the social values were more dominant in the North. Second, parents in both cultures publically agreed that parenting should promote the development of the whole child. However, parents in the South were inclined to support happiness and personal achievement of children, whilst parents in the North were likely to reinforce ideology education producing a pillar for socialism. Third, it was common that both parents of the South and the North were primarily responsible for child-rearing, but the role of government in child-rearing was more emphasized in the North. Lastly, supporting daily routine activities, communication skills, and art activities were included in child-care and education programs in both cultures. However, communication skills and social relationship were emphasized in programs of the South, whilst ideology education was the most important components in program of the North. The strategies for understanding differences in the value of children between the South and the North after unification were discussed.

  • Traditional familism and family value is known as the value that most Koreans share with. Strong family solidarity and family-centered perception among Koreans influences other social values and ideology. Under the family value, caring for family members is family responsibility instead of government responsibility. Previous studies argued that the family value played a role to impede the development of family policy in Korea. The aim of this study was to explore a relation between the family value and the needs for care-support family policy. This study investigated how the family value were related to the specific needs for care-support family policy. The data were drawn from the Seoul Families Survey conducted on 2006 by Seoul Women and Family Foundation. The survey data consisted of 2,500 married males and females living in Seoul. The statistical techniques used for analysis were frequencies, means, t-test, ANOVA, crosstabs, multiple regression models, and multinomial logit models. The major findings of this study were as followings. First, while the traditional familism appeared to be held at a certain level, the general attitudes towards cohabitation, divorce, and single-parent family seemed to be less traditional. Second, the familism was found to be partly associated with the needs for the care-support family policy. The respondents who had less traditional value on arriage and child-rearing showed the higher level of needs for daycare center. This finding implied that nontraditional attitudes were related to the needs for an alternative care service such as caring through facilities rather than to the needs for supportive or complementary services. Lastly, the respondents who had higher level of traditional familism showed a higher preference for direct economic service (supportive service) than for other types of service in child care. And the less traditional their attitudes towards marriage and child-rearing, the more likely they are to prefer flexible child care services and programs to other types of child care services. These results implied that the family value was partly influential to family policy. However, it is worthy to note that the family value was related to family policy preference rather than to family policy needs. In other words, traditional family value appeared to influence the types of family policy rather than the level of needs for family policy.

  • This research investigated the relationships between families' environment, familism, and the agreement on the parent-child relations as depicted in Korean proverbs to find the change of the traditional values about parent-child relationships. The sample was comprised of 474 Korean married people. They were asked to rate the degree to which they agreed on the underlying value of each proverb. The data were collected through a mailed questionnaire and interview. The findings indicated that the responses of subjects varied as a function of families' environment and familism variables. More specifically, while the subjects living with extended family were more likely to rate the value toward children and daughter high, the subjects from nuclear family were more likely to express the affection toward children, to prefer boys, and to express child-rearing stress. In addition, the people who had lived with grandparents together tended to agree with the value of filial piety. The respondents from conservative surroundings were more likely to express the affection toward children and to prefer boys. The subjects from a rural community tended to prefer boys and to place high value on the authoritative control. The people who supported familism tended to express the affection toward children and child-rearing stress, to prefer boys, and to agree with the filial piety and authoritative control. But they tended to rate low on the value of children and daughter.

The result of research was as follow: 1. The subjects of research had following peculiarities. Average age : 2.5 years 0~ 1 years : 32.0% Baby girl : 56.0% first baby : 58.0% Experienced inpatient : 52.0% The number of hospitalization times was 1~2 times : 61. 5% The average period of hospitalization : 7 days Infected inpatient with respiratory organ disease : 40.0% The mother's average age of child inpatient : 30.5 years Mother's who finished high school : 90.9% Family that income about 600,000-700,000 won : 32.0% Mothers who belived an religion : 50.0% 2. As hospitalization time goes by, mothers gradually failed to recognize the value of nursing. 3. Self-estimated tending satisfactions have no connection with the value of nursing that mothers recognized. 4. The value of nursing was effected by mothers own personnality-salf-consciousness care, experience of hospitalization, academic background & religoin. So, we find out that the value of nursing had no connection with satisfaction of tending. Nurses must make every effort to provide child inpatient with nursing of good quality, that mothers confirm and nurses satisfy themselves. • This study examined the effects of support systems and traditional value beliefs about the role of women on the parenting stress of dual-career mothers. The subjects were 203 employed mothers with one child 4- to 36-months of age. The influential independent variables affecting parenting stress listed in order of significance were satisfaction with child care, value placed on traditional maternal roles, sex of child, and cost of child care. Contrary to the researchers assumptions, social support systems had no effect on parenting stress. The results of this study have implications for formal and informal support systems for employed mothers with young children.
