  • This study was carried out to investigate the thermal stability of gingerol from Ginger and effect of its concentration on the oxidation of soybean oil. After Heating gingerol, the contents of remained gingerol was measured by HPLC. After heat treatment at $105^{\circ}C$ for 3 hours, 94.5% of gingerol was remained, whereas at $165^{\circ}C$ for 30 min., only 10% of gingerol was remained. Crude gingerol was also added to soybean oil at the concentration of 0.02%, 0.1% and 0.2% by weight of oil, respectively. The oils with crude gingerol were heat-treated at $105^{\circ}C$ for 5 hours and $165^{\circ}C$ for 30 minutes, respectively, and then the heat-treated oils were incubated at $45^{\circ}C$ for 25 days. The peroxide value of the oils was measured in order to estimate the antioxidant activity of crude gingerol compared with BHT. In the soybean oil heated at $105^{\circ}C$ for 5 hours, crude gingerol showed antioxidant activity at all concentration and the activity was more effective than 0.02% BHT. And during the storage of the heat-treated oils at $45^{\circ}C$, the antioxidant activity of crude gingerol increased in direct proportion to its concentration. In the soybean oil heated at $165^{\circ}C$ for 30 minutes and then stored at $45^{\circ}C$, the antioxidant activity of crude gingerol increased in direct proportion to its concentration.

  • Parallel imaging technique can provide several advantages for a multitude of MRI applications. Especially, in SENSE technique, sensitivity maps were always required in order to determine the reconstruction matrix, therefore, a number of difference approaches using sensitivity information from coils have been demonstrated to improve of image quality. Moreover, many filtering methods were proposed such as adaptive matched filter and nonlinear diffusion technique to optimize the suppression of background noise and to improve of image quality. In this study, we performed SENSE reconstruction using computer simulations to confirm the most suitable method for the feasibility of filtering effect and according to changing order of polynomial fit that were applied on variation of spatial resolution of sensitivity map. The image was obtained at 0.32T(Magfinder II, Genpia, Korea) MRI system using spin-echo pulse sequence(TR/TE = 500/20 ms, FOV = 300 mm, matrix = $128{\times}128$, thickness = 8 mm). For the simulation, obtained image was multiplied with four linear-array coil sensitivities which were formed of 2D-gaussian distribution and the image was complex white gaussian noise was added. Image processing was separated to apply two methods which were polynomial fitting and filtering according to spatial resolution of sensitivity map and each coil image was subsampled corresponding to reduction factor(r-factor) of 2 and 4. The results were compared to mean value of geomety factor(g-factor) and artifact power(AP) according to r-factor 2 and 4. Our results were represented while changing of spatial resolution of sensitivity map and r-factor, polynomial fit methods were represented the better results compared with general filtering methods. Although our result had limitation of computer simulation study instead of applying to experiment and coil geometric array such as linear, our method may be useful for determination of optimal sensitivity map in a linear coil array.

  • In previous reports the authors have screened the inhibition effects of marine algae extracts on halitosis, and demonstrated that a brown algae, Eisenia bicyclis (' Daehwang') possess not only strong deodorant effect bug also considerable anticariogenic activities. In this study, we screened antibacterial effects of various marine algae, and measured minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) value of them against mutans streptococci in vitro. Among the 27 species of marine algae, $80\%$ ethanol extract of dried sea-mustard, Laminaria japonica ('Dasima') showed the strongest inhibition activity against Streptococcus mutans KCTC 3300. The extracts of Ulva lactuca ('Galparae'), Codium fragile ('Cheonggak'), Ecklonia cava ('Gamtae'), E. stolonifera ('Gompi') and Undalia Pinnatifida ('Miyeok') showed slightly weaker inhibitory potency than L. japonica. Differences of MIC values in $80\%$ ethanol extract of some species of marine algae were observed depending on test bacterial species, i.e., S. mutans KCTC 3300 or S. sobrinus KCTC 3307. Eighty percent ethanol extract of dried L japonica was fractionated with diethyl ether, chloroform, ethyl acetate, n-buthanol and water successively, The ether-soluble fraction had inhibitory effect on S. mutans KCTC 3300, however the inhibitory effects were not found in the other fractions. The MIC values of $80\%$ ethanol extract and ether fraction were 180 and 105 $\mu$g/mL respectively, while no significant inhibition activity of water-soluble fraction was found even when the fraction was added up to 5,500 $\mu$g/mL.

  • The study of flocculation kinetics is of fundamental interest in the field of water treatment, because rational study of the factors affecting the coagulation process should be based on the rate of particle growth. The effect of sulfate on flocculation kinetics were examined using ferric nitrate as a coagulant to coagulate kaolin clay in water under several experimental conditions. Both the particle size distribution data obtained from the AIA and the on-line measurement of turbidity fluctuation by the PDA were used to measure flocculation kinetics. Results show that sulfate ion added to the kaolin suspension played an important role in the flocculation process, not only improving flocculation kinetics at more acidic pH levels but also changing surface charge of particles. The kinetics of flocculation were improved mainly by the enhanced rate and extent of Fe(III) precipitation attributed to the addition of sulfate, and thereby, better interparticle collision frequency, but little by the charge reductions resulting from the sulfate addition. The increase in sulfate concentration beyond $3\times10^{-4}M (up to 2\times10^{-3}M)$ did not induce further improvement in flocculation kinetics, although the higher concentrations of sulfate ion substantially increased the negative ZP value of particles. Key Words : Flocculation Kinetics, Fe(III) Coagulant, Sulfate ion, Turbidity Fluctuation.

  • Background: Bioactive compounds in plant extracts are able to reduce metal ions to nanoparticles through the process of green synthesis. Panax ginseng is an oriental medicinal herb and an adaptogen which has been historically used to cure various diseases. In addition, the P. ginseng leaves-mediated gold nanoparticles are the value-added novel materials. Its potential as a cosmetic ingredient is still unexplored. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antioxidant, moisture retention and whitening properties of gold nanoparticles (PgAuNPs) in cosmetic applications. Methods: Cell-free experiments were performed to evaluate PgAuNP's antioxidant and moisture retention properties and inhibition activity on mushroom tyrosinase. Furthermore, in vitro cell cytotoxicity was evaluated using normal human dermal fibroblast and murine B16BL6 melanoma cells (B16) after treatment with increasing concentrations of PgAuNPs for 24 h, 48 h, and 72 h. Finally, in vitro cell assays on B16 cells were performed to evaluate the whitening effect of PgAuNPs through reduction of cellular melanin content and tyrosinase activity. Results: In vitro DPPH radical scavenging assay results revealed that PgAuNPs exhibited antioxidant activity in a dose-dependent manner. PgAuNPs exhibited moisture retention capacity and effectively inhibited mushroom tyrosinase. In addition, 3-(4,5-dimethyl-thiazol-2yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide results revealed that PgAuNPs were not toxic to human dermal fibroblast and B16 cells; in addition, they significantly reduced melanin content, tyrosinase activity, and mRNA expression of melanogenesis-associated transcription factor and tyrosinase in B16 cells. Conclusion: Our study is the first report to provide evidence supporting that P. ginseng leaves-capped gold nanoparticles could be used as multifunctional ingredients in cosmetics.

  • Removal of paraffin wax from a ceramic injection mold using supercritical $CO_2$ has been studied. The paraffin wax is used as a binder in the ceramic injection molding process. The effects of pressure, temperature and flow rate of supercritical $CO_2$ on the removal of the paraffin wax were investigated. The removal rates were measured with various flow rates of $CO_2$ in the range of 328.15 - 348.15 K and 15 - 30 MPa. The removal rate of paraffin wax increased as the pressure increased. In the effect of temperature, the paraffin wax was effectively removed over 329.15K (melting point of paraffin wax), however, the efffct of temperature was not significant when the temperature was further increased. The increase of $CO_2$ flow rate also affected the removal of paraffin wax. However, the effect of flow rate was not observed when the flow rate reached a certain value. Propane was used as a co solvent in order to remove the paraffin wax effectively. When the propane was added to the $CO_2$, the removal efficiency was improved. The paraffin wax was completely removed from the ceramic injection mold without any change in their shape and the structure.

  • The deployment of social network service(SNS) makes the social network game(SNG) as the new value added service of SNS be popular. But, a few study had identified the reason of this popularity and the elements of SNG. Based on the social presence theory and media richness theory, we had tried to identify three community artifacts (i.e. persistent labeling, self presentation and deep profiling) and two media characteristics(i.e. vividness and interactivity) as the SNG elements in this research. Then we had empirically validated the effect of these elements on the SNGexperience (i.e. social presence, perceived enjoyment) and behavioral intentions (i.e. Continuous usage intention, willingness to pay and loyalty) of the users. We conducted a survey to the actual SNG users. 243 data were collected and analyzed by PLS algorism. The results indicated that the community artifacts mediated by the social presence and media characteristics could significantly affect on the experiences and behavioral intentions. These findings could contribute to identify what element could be the reason of social network game popularity and could also contribute to design more attractive social network game in practice.
