Train induced dynamic response of a pedestrian tunnel under a four-track surface railway for different soil water contents

  • A reinforced concrete pedestrian tunnel is constructed under a four-track surface railway. Heavy rainfall and soil exposure to drying lead to soil with different water content throughout the year. A railway is an open utility that is subject to rainfall without control on the quantity of the water on it and when there is a tunnel under a railway, the water content of the soil around the tunnel is very influential. This research shows the effects of change of water content in the soil around a pedestrian tunnel under a four-track surface railway. The pedestrian tunnel and the soil block around the tunnel are modeled in 3D by the FEM and are studied under the vibrations induced by the moving trains on the four-track surface railway for different soil water contents and the effects of the soil water content on the dynamic behavior of the tunnel and the surrounding soil are demonstrated.

  • Damage of infrastructures by an earthquake causes the secondary damage through the world at large more than the damage of the structures themselves. Amomg them, underground utility tunnel structures comes under the special life line: communication, gas, electricity and etc. and it has a need to evaluate its fragility to an earthquake exactly. Therefore, the destruction ability according to peak ground acceleration of earthquakes for the underground utility tunnels is evaluated in this paper. As an input ground motion for evaluating seismic fragilities, real earthquakes and artificial seismic waves which could be generated in the Korean peninsula are used. And as a seismic analysis method, response displacement method and time history analyzing method are used. An limit state which determines whether destruction is based on the bending moment and shear deformation. A method used to deduct seismic fragility curve is method of maximum likelihood and the distribution function is assumed to the log normal distribution. It could evaluate the damage of underground utility tunnels to an earthquake and could be applied as basic data for seismic design of underground utility tunnel structures.

  • Soil and rock improvement and reinforcement techniques are applied to achieve safe tunnel excavation in difficult geological conditions. The Umbrella Arch Method(UAM), one of the auxiliary techniques, is used to reduce ground permeability and improve stabtility of the tunnel by inserting a series of steel pipes into ground around the crown inclined to the longitudinal axis of the tunnel. Additionally, multi-step grouting is added through the steel pipes. UAM combines the advantages of a modern forepoling system with the grouting injection method. This technique has been applied in subway, road and utility tunneling sites for the last few years in Korea. This paper presents the results of analysis of the case studies on ground movements associated with UAM used in the Seoul Subway line 5 constructon site. Improvement of tunnel stability and decrease of ground settlement expected with pipe insertion are also discussed. Finally, the method to minimize ground settlements caused by NATM tunnelling are suggested.

  • The Korean government amended the Facilities Safety Act in 2018 to establish a performance-based maintenance system. This system is designed to comprehensively evaluate the safety, durability, and usage performance of facilities required to maintain their function in use, and to establish corresponding maintenance plans. However, the current maintenance system of utility tunnels is managed by a safety-oriented evaluation method, which has limitations in conducting performance evaluations that consider durability and usage performance. Therefore, in this study, safety, durability, and usage performance items for utility tunnels were selected using the Delphi method, and the weight of each item was calculated using the entropy weighting method. The results of this study are expected to be used in future performance evaluations of utility tunnels to support rational decision making when establishing maintenance plans.

  • 공동구내 설비에 대하여 공동구 관련 설치 및 유지관리 지침이 있고 지자체별 또는 공공기관별로 법적 장치가 있으나 충분한 설계기준을 반영하지 못하고 있다. 운영중인 공동구의 관리도 지자체 시설관리공단등으로 나누어져 있어 공통되고 일괄된 설치기준이나 유지관리제도도 확립되지 못하여 비효율적이다. 본 연구에서는 공동구 설계기준과 작성과 관련하여 작성방향에 대하여 살펴보고자 하였다.

Study of Tunnel Face Mapping Using Tunnel Mapper (Tunnel Mapper를 이용한 Tunnel 막장면 조사에 관한 연구)

  • Tunnel Mapper, which is tunnel face survey system was used to conduct Face Mapping on the face of the tunnel that is under construction. Then, accuracy and utility value on the forecast of discontinuity were verified to verify the field application in order to present the measures for the use of the system for conducting research on the discontinuity. As result of the directivity verification following discontinuity‘s project, forecasted measurement and actually researched measurement error for the Dip direction and Dip angle was less than ${\pm}10$. Accuracy was 82.6% for Dip direction and 90.7% for Dip angle, which are high. Accordingly, face research discontinuity forecasting system's reliability level towards directivity is high. Tunnel Mapper, a tunnel face survey system can be leveraged to replace face's visual survey and to obtain objective information, enabling execution of the survey system that can automate face survey going beyond time and space related limitations.

  • The tunnel excavations are used for construction of common utility tunnel, electric tunnel, communication line tunnel, water supply and public sewerage pile line in urban area. The trench cut methods were mainly used in the past, but now, tunneling method is more being used. The tunnel excavation method like as NATM, Messer-Shield, Semi-Shield Methods are being applied to small section tunnel in Korea. The actual construction results of seme-shield method are increasing due to simplified construction process and reduced noise and vibration. And also this method is being used frequently in waterway tunnel and construction of prevention flooding recently. The seme-shield method design guideline is absence except for electric line tunnel construction in Korea, because of the semi-shield method was developed in Europe and Japan. In the prescriptive design, engineer's subjects are tending to intervene, because of absence of standard and specification for details. Therefore, Design and Construction Problems of Semi-Shield Method were described and construction trouble was introduced for exam. These problem and construction troubles have to be examined thoroughly in advance.
