  • In this paper, we carry out a performance analysis of a two-user free-space optical (FSO) communication system with photodetector multiplexing, in which the two users are defined as the primary user (PU) and secondary user (SU). Unlike common single-user FSO systems, our photodetector multiplexing FSO system deploys a shared detector at the receiver and enables PU and SU to send their own data synchronously. We conduct the performance analysis of this FSO system for two cases: (1) in the absence of background radiation, and (2) in the presence of background radiation. Decision strategies for PU and SU are presented according to the two scenarios above. Exact and approximate conditional symbol-error probability (SEP) expressions for both PU and SU are derived, in an ideal channel with no fading. Average SEP expressions are also presented in the no-background-radiation scenario. Additionally, in some particular cases where the power ratio tends to 0.5 or 1, approximate SEP expressions are also obtained. Finally, numerical simulations are presented under different conditions, to support the performance analysis.

  • In this paper, we study the throughput-delay tradeoff of OFDMA systems in context of 2-dimensional resource allocation, and analyze the effect of frequency diversity and user-multiplexing in time domain that has on delay QoS performance. Based on the analysis results, we investigate the impacts of delay QoS on spectral efficiency. In high SNR regime, the optimal DoM (degree of multiplexing) maximizing the spectral efficiency is identified. The results of the high SNR analysis can give us an intuition on an efficient resource allocation policy. Finally, through the simulation results, we verify that our approach with its optimal DoM yields substantial capacity gain.

  • In this paper, we propose a power allocation scheme of the unlicensed user based on orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) in the TV white space (TVWS). Power constraints in TVWS should be satisfied in the time domain. However, because OFDM has high PAPR (peak-to-average power ratio), it is difficult to satisfy power constraints of TVWS in the time domain. Furthermore, the conventional power allocation schemes cannot be generally applied to unlicensed user in TVWS. Therefore, we propose a power allocation scheme to satisfy power constraints of TVWS by reducing PAPR in the time domain. In addition, we analyze the capacity of the unlicensed user based on OFDM in a closed form. Based on the capacity analysis, as the number of subcarriers decreases, the capacity can be enhanced. In simulation results, we show that the capacity of the unlicensed user increases, as the number of subcarriers decreases and the mean of the channel between the transmitter and the receiver of the unlicensed user increases.

  • The conventional detection methods developed for spatially-multiplexed MIMO systems such as OSIC and QRD-M show performance difference for each user depending on the order of detection when they are applied to detection of multi-user signals in uplink multiuser systems based on collaborative spatial multiplexing. In this paper, a signal detection method for uplink multiuser systems based on collaborative spatial multiplexing is proposed to provide similar performance for each user while its performance is close to the case of ML detection. Compared with QRD-M method, computational complexity of the proposed signal detection method is similar in the case of QPSK, and significantly lower in the case of high modulation order with 16-QAM and 64-QAM.

  • In this paper, we present the analytic model to quantify the system capacity with delay Quality of Service (QoS) constraints, and analyze the effect of user-multiplexing on the delay QoS performance in multiuser low-power wireless communication systems. For this purpose, we define the degree of multiplexing as the number of scheduled users to be served in a frame, and investigate the effect of degree of multiplexing (DoM) on the trade-off of throughput and delay QoS constraints. Through this analysis, we characterize the optimal DoM maximizing the energy efficiency in low-power communication environments. Finally, through the simulation results, we verify that our approach with its optimal DoM yields substantial capacity gain.

  • We propose a random frequency hopping orthogonal frequency division multiple access (RFH-OFDMA) system based on statistical multiplexing for improving downlink user capacity. User capacity is defined as the maximum number of users served with a given basic data-rate in a cell. We compare the downlink user capacity of the proposed RFH-OFDMA system with that of the conventional frequency hopping OFDMA (FH-OFDMA) systems in the worst case where all users are located at the cell boundary. User capacity is limited by either the number of subcarriers or other-cell interference (OCI). Simulation results show that the proposed RFH-OFDMA system can accommodate 262 users in a 3-sectored cell, while the conventional FH-OFDMA systems can accommodate 51 users, when the user channel activity and the required Eb/I0 are 0.1 and 6 dB, respectively, and all users are assumed to be located at the cell boundary.

  • In this paper, we consider the use of orthogonal multiple beams (OMBs) to simultaneously achieve multi-user diversity and multiplexing gain in a packet-based wireless system. Previous OMB scheme considers the use of a fixed number of multiple beams equal to the number of transmit antennas. However, unless the number of active users is sufficiently large, the use of a fixed number of multiple beams may not provide desired performance due to the interference signal transmitted through other beams, being even worse than the use of a single beam. To alleviate this problem, we consider the adjustment of the number of beams in use to maximize the spectral efficiency according to the operating condition. Simulation results show the validity of the proposed scheme.

  • Visible light communication (VLC) is considered to be an attractive scheme to realize the broadband wireless communication for an indoor environment. We present a room division multiplexing (RDM) mechanism for an indoor multi-room VLC network, which utilizes the spatial position of the LED lamp in different rooms as a novel dimension of network resource for multiplexing, and thus the network capacity is increased. In such a network, the service interruption caused by user cross-room movement is an important problem, and we propose a double-area-positioning based cross-room switch solution. An experimental platform demonstrates the RDM-deployed VLC network, and validates the performance of the presented switch mechanism.

  • Smartcard is highlighted as infrastructure that has an excellent security for executing functions such as user authentication, access control, information storage and control, and its market is expanding rapidly. But possibilities of forgery and alteration by hacking are increasing as well. This paper proposes a method to prevent card forgery and alteration using angular multiplexing and private key multiplexing method on optical encryption, and proposed a Public Key Infrastructure(PKI)-based authentication system combined with One-Time Password (OTP) for verification of forgery and alteration .

  • In this paper, diversity-multiplexing tradeoff (DMT) of three-user wireless multiple-antenna cooperative systems is investigated in general fading channels when half-duplex and decode-and-forward relay is employed. Three protocols, i.e., adaptive protocol, receive diversity protocol, and dual-hop relaying protocol, are considered. The general fading channels may include transmit and/or receive correlation and nonzero channel means, and are extensions of independent and identically distributed Rayleigh or Rician fading channels. Firstly, simple DMT expressions are derived for general fading channels with zero channel means and no correlation when users employ arbitrary number of antennas. Explicit DMT expressions are also obtained when all users employ the same number of antennas and the channels between any two users are of the same fading statistics. Finally, the impact of nonzero channel means and/or correlation on DMT is evaluated. It is revealed theoretically that the DMTs depend on the number of antennas at each user, channel means (except for Rayleigh and Rician fading statistics), transmit and/or receive correlation, and the polynomial behavior near zero of the channel gain probability density function. Examples are also provided to illustrate the analysis and results.
