Reading Strategies among Saudi EFL Students

  • This study was initially conducted to explore Saudi students' use of reading strategies and their relationship to their reading comprehension level. The study employed quantitative methods to obtain information about Saudi students' perceived use of reading strategies and their comprehension levels. The results showed that EFL learners in Saudi Arabia use planning strategies more than attending strategies and evaluating strategies. Saudi students also perceived the environment as the most critical factor affecting their reading comprehension. There was no significant relationship between Saudi EFL learners' comprehension level and their use of reading strategies. Finally, gender differences favoring female learners were evident in almost all analyses conducted in the current study. Significant differences were found favoring female students in overall strategy use, comprehension level, and the use of evaluating strategies.

멀티미디어 활용효과에 대한 가정과 교사의 인식 (The Effects of Instructional Multi-Media in Home Economics Education Perceived by Teachers.)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of instructional multi-media in Home Economics Education perceived by teachers. The data for this research were attained from 139 middle & high school teachers of Home Economics. The data were analyzed by frequency of distribution, mean, stand deviation. t-test and analysis of variance, scheffe test with SPSSWin 7.5 program. The results of this study are as follows: The effects of instructional multi-media were composed of four dimensions in this study; need, frequency of use, pros and cons. 1. From these four dimensions, the need has the highest and the frequency of use has the lowest score. 2. The effects of instructional multi-media are significantly related to personal & environmental characteristics. 1)Need of the instructional multi-media effects is significantly different according to age, experience of computer education and possession of a computer at home. Low and high age groups are higher in the need of the instructional multi-media effects score than middle group age and the more experience of computer education and possession of a computer at home are higher in that score. 2) Frequency of use is significantly different according to LAN system in school. The higher score of frequency of use is in a LAN system’s school. 3) Pros of the instructional multi-media effects is significantly different according to the level of education, experience of computer education and the type of school. Undergraduate high school teachers and the lower o experience of computer education are higher in the pros of the instructional multi-media effects score. 4) Cons of the instructional multi-media effects is significantly different according to the level of education. Graduate teachers are higher in the cons of the instructional multi-media effects score.

영양소 섭취량과 스크린 시간이 학령 전 아동의 비만에 미치는 영향 (The Effects of Nutrient Intake and Screen Time(Television Viewing and Computer and/or Video Games) on Preschool Children Obesity)

  • The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of nutrient intake, screen time (television viewing and computer and/or video games) and physical activity on obesity in preschool children. Recruitment began in January 2008 by distributing letters to mothers who had children aged 6 years enrolled in daycare. Dietary intakes were obtained from the children's mothers, using the 24-hour recall method. The average height and weight of the children were 114.2 cm and 20.3 kg, respectively. Mean age, body weight, height and Kaup index were not significantly different between groups consisting of boys or girls. Assessment by the Kaup index showed that 14.0% of children were underweight, 69.0% were normal weight, 13.0% were overweight, and 4% were obese. The daily intakes of calcium, potassium, fiber, and folic acid in the group of boys were 77.7%, 58.5%, 80.4% and 88.9% respectively. as compared with the DRIs. Intakes of protein, phosphorus, iron, zinc, vitamin A, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin C, and vitamin E were higher than the DRIs. There were no difference among 3 groups (underweight, normal, overweight) in energy or nutrient intake. Preschool children with screen time (TV viewing and computer and/or video games use time) of >2 hours per day had significantly higher Kaup index values, and intakes of energy, carbohydrate, folic acid and zinc. In conclusion, preschool children with reported screen time (TV viewing and computer and/or video games use time) of >2 hours per day were fatter. Therefore, we need further investigate the relation between diet and screen time in preschool children to improve future nutrition education programs. Further studies are required to explore the effects of food intake and screen time (TV viewing and computer and/or video games use time) over a longer period of time.

원격 다중 참여자 3차원 그래픽스 게임 개발 (Development of Multi User Games using 3D Graphics and Multicasting)

  • 본 논문에서는 원격 다중 참여자 3차원 그래픽스 게임 개발에 대하여 연구 하였다. 3차원 컴퓨터 그래픽스를 이용하여 표현된 가상의 공간에서, 컴퓨터 통신을 사용하여 원격지에 떨어져 있는 여러 사용자가 서로 상호작용 하면서, 여러 사용자가 서로 3차원 그래픽스로 표현된 물체를 공유할 수 있는 게임 시스템 구축의 연구에 목적을 두었다. 3차원 그래픽스 물체를 표현하기 위하여 OpenInventor와 C++를 사용하였다. 통신을 위하여 멀티캐스트 통신 프로토콜을 사용하였으며 입력 장치로서 3차원 위치 방향 인식/입력기인 Polhemus Fastrak을 사용하였다. 한가지 예로, 분산된 네트워크에서 여러 사용자가 함께 피아노를 연주하는 효과를 얻을 수 있는 게임을 구현하여 제시한다.

Reliability and Validity of the CAP for Computer Access Assessment of Persons with Physical Disabilities

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop a computer access assessment tool for persons with physical disabilities and to evaluate reliability and validity. Methods: We developed a computerized Computer access Assessment Program (CAP) through many kinds of literature review and tools analysis for evaluation of computer access, task analysis of fundamental input devices operation and expert review. The CAP data were obtained from 105 normal university students and 16 students with physical disabilities. The test items of CAP are composed of four timed mouse tasks, four timed keyboard tasks, and a timed scanning task. Thus, the software measures user performance in skills needed for computer interaction, such as keyboard and pointer use, navigating through menus, and scanning. To determine the validity of these measurements, we compared data on CAP reports to a Compass report. Compass software allows an evaluator for assessment of an individual's computer input skills. Results: Results of this study showed that the CAP had high internal consistency, reliability of test-retest, concurrent validity, and convergent validity. Conclusion: Therefore, the CAP is appropriate for evaluation and determination of computer access skill of persons with physical disabilities. It is possible to get clear quantitative data on performance when providing computer access services if you can use the CAP data. Using this quantitative evidence, insights can be gained into the specific nature of any difficulties experienced by persons with physical disabilities and find wise solutions.

  • Computer technology in mathematics teaching-learning is not for teaching computer but for improving mathematics teaching-learning with computer. It is shown the use of computer technology comparing with traditional approach provides students more opportunities in order to approach abstract structure. Computer activity provides not only understanding concepts of analysis and opportunity to investigate theory but also effective background in teaching analysis. We analyze students' computer usage level on analysis education by using computer usage level according to role of computer technology. We try to get an useful educational implication on analysis education applying MATLAB through qualitative research.

교육행정정보시스템(NEIS) 사용자 만족도에 영향을 미치는 요인에 관한 연구 (A Study of the Factors in Influencing Satisfaction with the National Education Information System)

  • As National Education Information Systems (NEIS) is supposed to broadly introduced all over the country, we need to understand factors that would affect its successful use. Studies regarding the NEIS have been made in terms of a social issue according to its introduction and use, however there has been only little research made in terms of the use of the system so far. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the factors that would have effect on a successful use of the NEIS. A research model of the study is based on the extended DeLone and McLean's information systems success model with two characteristics of computer self-efficacy and perceived fairness. Based on the survey data from 168 subjects, the present study performs SEM analysis with PLS. The results show that perceived usefulness and computer self-efficacy improves the user satisfaction. However, the user' satisfaction does not cause system characteristics- system quality, information quality, service quality -and perceived fairness not effect. The study provides characteristics which can effectively and smoothly introduce the NEIS for its successful use on the upcoming full scale execution on the NEIS.

  • For the purpose of adapting positively to the information society, it is very important to develop the capabilities of the retrieve, gather, process and application for informations by making efficient use of computers. So, with a view to understanding the importance of computer and adjusting actively to the information society, the systematic policy to cultivate the ability of making the most of computers is strongly demended. Therefore this study is to make a curriculum and guide for improving the capability of applying computers systematically, through analyzing a curriculum of computer in Elementary, Middle and High Schools, and to develop a model of grading system to cultivate the ability of applying computers, which grades capabilities of its practical use.

아동소비자의 매체별 유료 콘텐츠 사용특성과 금전인식 연구 (Children's Use of Paid Content Based on Media and Monetary Concepts)

  • This study examines the use of paid content by children and identifies their monetary concept based on the following three research questions: (1) What are the characteristics of paid-content use by children? (2) How can the monetary concept of children be classified? (3) How does this monetary concept vary across use groups? Data were collected from 245 elementary school students. Based on the results, there were two types of media content used by children: mobile and computer content. Children were classified into four consumer groups based on the type media content use and the amount of content use. In addition, monetary concepts of children using paid content had two dimensions: money for means and that for objects. For computer users, monetary concept for conspicuous consumption and mammonism were more likely in the high-use group than in the low-use group. For mobile users, there was no significant difference in money for means and money for objects between the high-use group and the low-use group. The limitations of this study offer some interesting avenues for future research.

병원약국의 외래조제업무에 대한 컴퓨터의 이용 (Utilization of Computer System for Outpatient's Dispensing Affairs in Hospital Pharmacy)

  • Hospital pharmacy services are divided into dispensing affairs for inpatients and outpatients, pharmaceutical service, stock control, intravenous admixture service, drug information service, pharmacokinetic consultation service, education and research work, etc. But among those affairs, dispensing affair for outpatient is perceived as the most important work in Korea, because it is linked directly with hospital service for patients. Therefore, total computer system for dispensing area was adopted from opening point of hospital in 1989 in Asan Medical Center. Utilization of computer system for outpatient dispensing area is as follows; 1) Order communication system of prescription by Total Hospital Information System, 2) Automatic print-out system of direction for use by sticker connected with on-line net work, 3) Use of automatic tablet counting and packaging machines connected with on-line net work. Those computer system resulted in curtailment of pharmacy manpower and shortening of waiting-time for outpatient.
