  • Rainfall-runoff procedures of urban area are more complicated than agricultural procedures. Extension and development of town leads to shift of the basin characteristics and it makes more difficult to use runoff models. In this study, the changes of hydrologic circumstances and the shape of hydrograph due to the urbanization in Cho-kyung river basin has been assessed which is the representative urban stream in Jeonju city. The urbanization can be classified as four typical year. The natural basin period(1924) that is before the urban development, the period of construction of Chonbuk National University campus (1963), the period of construction of residential area(1986), and urbanization process has been finally completed in 1995. The rainfall-runoff analysis has been carried out by Storm Water Management Model(SWMM) under condition of the basin characteristics and impervious area of each period. It was found that hydrologic characteristics such as river length, roughness coefficient, and coefficient of surface storage has been decreased. According to the land use change, the pervious area was decreased from 97.7% to 42%, while the impervious area was increased from 0.6% to 34%. The time of concentration was shorten from 90 minutes to 37 minutes. Along with decreasing the time of concentration, the peak discharge was increased from $4.37m^3/s$ to $111.13m^3/s$, and the runoff rate was also increased from 0.8% to 68%.

  • This study investigated the runoff characteristics containing NPS pollutants in urban areas and estimated the optimal number of storm events to be monitored. 13 residential areas, 8 commercial areas, 9 transportation areas and 11 industrial areas were selected to be monitored located in urban areas. Monitoring was performed from 2008 to 2016 with a total of 632 rainfall events. As a result, it was found that commercial area needs priority NPS management compared to other landuses because the commercial area has high runoff coefficient and NPS pollutant EMC compared with other landuses. The annual monitoring frequency for each landuse was estimated to be 11 to 14 times for industrial area, 12 to 14 times for transportation area, 11 to 13 times for commercial area and 22 to 25 times for residential area. Even with the use of accumulated monitoring data for several years, there is still high probability of uncertainty due to high error in some pollutant items, and it is necessary to establish monitoring know-how and data accumulation to reduce errors by continuous monitoring.

  • Recently, the green spaces in the urban areas were greatly reduced due to urbanization and industrialization. As urban structures such as roads and buildings are built, the amount of impervious area within a watershed increases. High impervious surfaces are the common causes of high runoff volumes as the soil infiltration capacity decreases and the volume and rate of runoff increase thereby decreasing the groundwater recharge. These effects are causing many environmental problems, such as floods and droughts, climate change, heat island phenomenon, drying streams, etc. Most cities attempted to reduce sewer overflows by separating combined sewers, expanding treatment capacity or storage within the sewer system, or by replacing broken or decaying pipes. However, these practices can be enormously expensive than combined sewer overflows. Therefore, in order to improve these practices, alternative methods should be undertaken. A new approach termed as "Low Impact Development (LID)" technology is currently applied in developed countries around the world. The purpose of this study was to effectively manage runoff by adopting the LID techniques. Small Constructed Wetland(Horizontal Subsurface Flow, HSSF) Pilot-scale reactors were made in which monitoring and experiments were performed to investigate the efficiency of the system in removing pollutants from runoff. Based on the results of the Pilot-plant experiments, TSS, $COD_{Cr}$, TN, TP, Total Pb removal efficiency were 95, 82, 35, 91 and 57%, respectively. Most of the pollutants were reduced after passing the settling tank and the vertical filter media. The results of this study can contribute to the conservation of aquatic ecosystems and restoration of natural water cycle in the urban areas.

  • In recent, the rainfall is showing different properties in space and time but the ground rain gauge only can observe rainfall at a point. This means the ground rain gauge has the limitations in spatial and temporal resolutions to measure rainfall and so there is a need to utilize radar rainfall which can consider spatial distribution of rainfall This study tried to apply radar rainfall for runoff simulation on an urban drainage system. The study area is Guro-gu, Seoul and we divided study area into subbasins based on rain gauge network of AWS(Automatic Weather station). Then the radar rainfalls were adjusted using rainfall data of rain gauge stations the areal rainfalls were obtained. The runoffs were simulated by using XP-SWMM model in subbasins of an urban drainage system. As the results, the adjusted radar rainfalls were underestimated in the range of 60 to 95% of rain gauge rainfalls and so the simulated runoffs from the adjusted radar and gauge rainfalls also showed the differences. The runoff peak time from radar rainfall was occurred more fast than that from gauge rainfall.

  • Active stormwater management is essential to minimize the impact of urban development and improve the hydrological cycle system. In recent years, the Low Impact Development (LID) technique for urban stormwater management is attracting attention as a reasonable alternative. The Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) is actively used in urban hydrological cycle improvement projects as it provides simulation functions for various GI (Green Infra) facilities through its LID module. However, in order to simulate GI facilities using SWMM, there are many difficulties in setting up complex watersheds and deploying GI facilities. In this study, a model that can evaluate the performance of GI facilities is proposed while implementing the core hydrological process of GI facilities. Since the proposed model operates based on hydrological routing, it can not only reflect the infiltration, storage, and evapotranspiration of GI facilities, but also quantitatively evaluate the effect of improving urban hydrological cycle by GI facilities. The applicability of the proposed model was verified by comparing the results of the proposed model with the results of SWMM. In addition, a discussion of errors occurring in the SWMM's permeable pavement system simulation is included.

  • Targeting a rooftop biotope created in urban area, this study aims at verifying a creation technique reflecting an urban biosphere reserve concept as well as its function as the habitats of various wild animals. To this end, a set of processes of a biosphere reserve-based basic conception and master plan, sectoral plans, construction and monitoring were applied to the rooftop of 12-story UNESCO Building in Seoul. In particular, the rooftop habitats were divided into core area, buffer zone and transition area, and habitats and facilities suitable to the characteristics of each space were planned. By aligning a plantation planning map with environmental conditions such as topography and water, creation of diverse habitats was enabled. As a result, a set of various habitats including wetlands, wild grassland, shrubs, forest trees and vegetable fields was created at the site. Species living in these habitats included 148 plant species, 62 insect species, 2 amphibian species, 3 fishery species and 3 bird species. The rooftop eco-park of UNESCO Building, which was created one year ago, is assessed as an important space for conservation of biodiversity as well as a place where a biosphere reserve concept was well applied. Meanwhile, for this rooftop biotope to be a pioneer of urban biosphere reserve-based types, a number of principles & methodologies suggested in this study need to be applied, In a perspective of landscape ecology, maintenance efforts should be linked with green areas in neighboring areas, which are the sources of species, In addition, considering that the rooftop biotope is a restored ecosystem, theories and approaches from restoration ecology should be applied. On-going monitoring on environmental changes is also required as the site is located in the urban center, Ultimately, rooftop biotopes including the case study area should contribute in promoting the socio-economic, cultural, and spiritual sustainability as well as environmental sustainability of a city.

  • Nature-based Solutions (NbS) are defined as practical and technical approaches to restoring functioning ecosystems and biodiversity as a means to address socio-environmental challenges and provide human-nature co-benefits. This study reviews NbS-related literature to identify its key characteristics, techniques, and challenges for its application in climate-adaptive water management. The review finds that NbS has been commonly used as an umbrella term incorporating a wide range of existing ecosystem-based approaches such as low-impact development (LID), best management practices (BMP), forest landscape restoration (FLR), and blue-green infrastructure (BGI), rather than being a uniquely-situated practice. Its technical form and operation can vary significantly depending on the spatial scale (small versus large), objective (mitigation, adaptation, naturalization), and problem (water supply, quality, flooding). Commonly cited techniques include green spaces, permeable surfaces, wetlands, infiltration ponds, and riparian buffers in urban sites, while afforestation, floodplain restoration, and reed beds appear common in non- and less-urban settings. There is a greater lack of operational clarity for large-scale NbS than for small-scale NbS in urban areas. NbS can be a powerful tool that enables an integrated and coordinated action embracing not only water management, but also microclimate moderation, ecosystem conservation, and emissions reduction. This study points out the importance of developing decision-making guidelines that can inform practitioners of the selection, operation, and evaluation of NbS for specific sites. The absence of this framework is one of the obstacles to mainstreaming NbS for water management. More case studies are needed for empirical assessment of NbS.

  • Constructed wetlands (CWs) are effective technologies for urban wastewater management, utilizing natural physico-chemical and biological processes to remove pollutants. This study employed a bibliometric analysis approach to investigate the progress and future research trends in the field of CWs. A comprehensive review of 100 most-recently published and open-access articles was performed to analyze the performance of CWs in treating wastewater. Spain, China, Italy, and the United States were among the most productive countries in terms of the number of published papers. The most frequently used keywords in publications include water quality (n=19), phytoremediation (n=13), stormwater (n=11), and phosphorus (n=11), suggesting that the efficiency of CWs in improving water quality and removal of nutrients were widely investigated. Among the different types of CWs reviewed, hybrid CWs exhibited the highest removal efficiencies for BOD (88.67%) and TSS (95.67%), whereas VSSF, and HSSF systems also showed high TSS removal efficiencies (83.25%, and 78.83% respectively). VSSF wetland displayed the highest COD removal efficiency (71.82%). Generally, physical processes (e.g., sedimentation, filtration, adsorption) and biological mechanisms (i.e., biodegradation) contributed to the high removal efficiency of TSS, BOD, and COD in CW systems. The hybrid CW system demonstrated highest TN removal efficiency (60.78%) by integrating multiple treatment processes, including aerobic and anaerobic conditions, various vegetation types, and different media configurations, which enhanced microbial activity and allowed for comprehensive nitrogen compound removal. The FWS system showed the highest TP removal efficiency (54.50%) due to combined process of settling sediment-bound phosphorus and plant uptake. Phragmites, Cyperus, Iris, and Typha were commonly used in CWs due to their superior phytoremediation capabilities. The study emphasized the potential of CWs as sustainable alternatives for wastewater management, particularly in urban areas.

  • The objective of this research is to observe and to analyze how the precipitation change can affect urban area and coastal area to groundwater recharge. The variation in the precipitation data of the regional groundwater basin, which includes Busan Metropolitan City Suyeong Gu area, was to estimate the change in the groundwater recharge and to analyze the characteristic changes. Research result reflects that as the precipitation varied, there was some difference in the groundwater recharge. However, differences in the precipitation ratio and the groundwater recharge ratio were consistent. Variation in the precipitation had less impact on the groundwater recharge ratio, and the groundwater recharge ratio decreased as timeline increased. When the precipitation increased by 10 %, groundwater recharge changed by 2.23 %. Accordingly, when it decreased by 10 %, groundwater recharge changed by 2.20 %. When it increased by 20 %, groundwater recharge changed by 4.39 %, and when it decreased by 20 %, groundwater recharge changed by 4.36 %. Despite the dramatic changes in the precipitation, the changes in the groundwater recharge were minimal. From the research, we can observe that the precipitation change had a significant impact on the ratio, but it doesn't really affect the groundwater recharge. Therefore, in urban area, the changes in groundwater recharge don't conform to the changes in the precipitation, and the effect of direct runoff can increase the possible occurrence of urban flooding.
