  • Aedes albopictus, a common species in the Republic of Korea, is internationally known as a major vector for various diseases, and it is well-adapted to urban environments. Recent insect outbreaks in urban areas, attributed to climate change and urban heat islands, have increased the necessity of researching the effects on mosquito populations. This study analyzed climate data from 25 Automatic Weather System (AWS) stations in Seoul, identifying urban areas with pronounced heat island effects and suburban areas with milder effects. Nine urban heat island conditions were established based on this analysis, under which the hatching rates of Ae. albopictus were examined. The results revealed an increase in hatching rates correlating with the intensity of the urban heat island effect. Regression analysis further indicated that this trend accelerates as the strength of the heat island effect increases. This study suggests that temperature variations resulting from urban heat island phenomena can significantly influence the hatching rates of Ae. albopictus.

  • Global climate change and urban heat island have been the main factors which changed leaf burst timing and leaf growth performance in urban forests. Therefore, the ecosystem in urban forests were modified and the types and composition of wildlives, living in the urban forests, were desperately changed due to the urban heat island. This study was done to identify phenological phenomena appeared in urban forests due to the urban climate change by comparing the morphological changes of leaves due to the change of temperature in Spring. The study focused on nine urban forests distributed in Daegu city, where weekly temperature and the morphological changes of the plants were mainly observed. Urban forests had different temperature depending on where each was located in the urban area. The difference of temperature in forests in and outside the urban area was verified by SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences), which divided the urban forests into about three groups; the one located outside the city, another group located in the middle of the city, and the other located close to the outside forests. The forests located in the middle of the city were showing the earlier leaf burst timing and leaf growth performance, while forests, distributed outside the city, were showing relatively late leaf burst timing and leaf performance.

  • The modernistic rationalism which thinks much of the mathematical rationality and economic efficiency is widely spread in Korea economic planning, urban planning, urban transportation planning, and the like. As a result the demands to humanity, amanity, and so on have been disregarded in the name of rationality in urban spatial organization, the typical examples, one of the pedestrian space. The pedestrian space which is passed over easily from the view point of the modernistic rationalism, is actually the space that should be reflected abundantly in urban space. The author emphasized a need of reconsideration on the position of pedestrian space in urban spatial planning process, and adopted the theoretical research on the functions and roles of pedestrian space. In consequence of this study the functions of pedestrian space are considered : the first, the function as a space for moving, the second, the function as a space for buffer. the third, the function as a space for intermediation. the fourth, the function as a space for urban daily life. the fifth, the function as new urban environment-making factor.

  • The purpose of this research is to propose a plan on migration policy based on features, through analyzing the migration adaption process and the farming life of the back-to-countryside population throughout the nation. For this, survey has been conducted to find out urban-to-rural migrants' motives and characteristics. The major reason for the migration was the household's financial condition, and the most of migration decisions were made by either one's spouse or parents. The migration fund was primarily spent in early agricultural activities and it was the neighbors who aided them the most whilst teaching them many farming techniques. Some government-supported policies are being highly demanded regarding the lower level of income (than urban life) and difficulties of raising cultivation funds; these two things are what migrants consider as the most inconvenient and suffering matters in farming life. Many surveyee have responded that they would constantly stay in the rural area and continue on their life as a farmer, giving a promising prospect for future farmland life. Based on these trends and features, development strategy regarding elaborate settlement plan of urban-to-rural migration is necessary.

  • The objective of this study was to analyze social wasps' urban distribution tendency based on 10 species found in two metropolitan cities (Busan and Daegu) of South Korea. There 10 species included six species (Vespa mandarinia, V. ducalis, V. crabro flavofasciata, Vespula koreensis koreensis, Parapolybia indica, and Polistes snelleni) of forest dwellers that inhabited urban main forests and satellite forests, two species (V. simillima simillima and V. analis parallela) of facultative dwellers that nested at diverse sites of urban areas with greater preference for urban forest, and two species (V. velutina nigrithorax and P. rothneyi koreanus) of urban dwellers that nested at almost all sites, including urban and forest areas. These urban dwellers were found to adapt well to an urban environment based on their far higher rate of urban nesting compared to facultative dwellers. When distribution tendencies of facultative dwellers and urban dwellers in Busan and Daegu were compared, a regular distribution was mostly observed in Busan with a dense forest network. For Daegu that lacked forest connectivity, the greatest distribution of species was found in the nearby urban forest. For Daegu, a city further away from forests, urban dwellers occurred far beyond forest sites compared to Busan with a dense forest network.
