Urbanization leads to a change of hydrologic responses because impervious area is increased by urbanization. Decrease of groundwater recharge and increase of overland flow are general hydrologic characteristics caused by urbanization. This can be a source of damages such as increased flooding and reduced groundwater levels. Daily streamflow in Gabcheon watershed, South Korea is simulated by ARCSWAT model, an extension of SWAT2005. After calibration and validation of model, the simulated daily streamflow from 1997 to 2001 are statistically analyzed. The phenomenon that $T_{Qmean}$ is inversly proportional to coefficient of variation for the simulated daily streamflow is demonstrated. Also, hydrologic response was more influenced by weather than land use for high flow. This study also examines the effect of land use change on daily streamflow with spatially and quantitatively different land use maps. The simulated stream flow is tested by Mann-Whitney method. The median between stream flows simulated for 1990 and 2000 land use maps is significantly different, but the simulated streamflow for spatially different land use maps is almost unchanged.
For precise interpretation of magnetotelluric (MT) data distorted by irregular surface terrain, topography effects are investigated by computing apparent resistivities, phases, tippers and induction vectors for a three-dimensional (3D) hill-and-valley model. To compute MT responses for the 3D surface topography model, we use a 3D MT modeling algorithm based on an edge finite-element method which is free from vector parasites. Distortions on the apparent resistivity and phase are mainly caused by distorted currents that flow along surface topography. The distribution of tipper amplitudes over both hill and valley are the same, while the tipper points toward the center of hill and the base of the valley. The real part of induction vector also points in the same direction as that of tipper, while the imaginary part in the opposite direction.

Recent decades have seen all over the world increasing drought in some regions and increasing flood in others. Climate change has been alarming in many regions resulting in degradation and diminution of available freshwater. The effect of global warming and overpopulation associated with increasing irrigated farming and valuable agricultural lands could be particularly disastrous for coastal areas like the one of Benin. The coastal region of Benin is under a heavy demographic pressure and was in the last decades the object of important urban developments. The present study aims to roughly study the general effect of climate change (Sea Level Rise: SLR) and groundwater pumping on Seawater intrusion (SWI) in Benin's coastal region. To reach the main goal of our study, the region aquifer system was built in numerical model using SEAWAT engine from Visual MODFLOW. The model is built and calibrated from 2016 to 2020 in SEAWAT, and using WinPEST the model parameters were optimized for a better performance. The optimized parameters are used for seawater intrusion intensity evaluation in the coastal region of Benin The simulation of the hydraulic head in the calibration period, showed groundwater head drawdown across the area with an average of 1.92m which is observed on the field by groundwater level depletion in hand dug wells mainly in the south of the study area. SWI area increased with a difference of 2.59km2 between the start and end time of the modeling period. By considering SLR due to global warming, the model was stimulated to predict SWI area in 2050. IPCC scenario IS92a simulated SLR in the coastal region of Benin and the average rise is estimated at 20cm by 2050. Using the average rise, the model is run for SWI area estimation in 2050. SWI area in 2050 increased by an average of 10.34% (21.04 km2); this is expected to keep increasing as population grows and SLR.
This study proposed "Reservoir Park", which added disaster prevention function to urban green spaces such as city parks through domestic and overseas related laws review, case studies, field trips. This is a combination of urban parks and reservoirs as urban planning facilities, which can provide both space for daily use by urban residents and disaster mitigation functions in case of emergency. In order to prevent flooding in urban areas due to climate change, facilities should be installed in the form of parks, etc., as the reservoir facility should be systematically reviewed together with urban planning facilities. However it was found that the reservoir park was not clear as a theme park. In this study, the types of storage facilities in urban areas were reclassified into five types of storage parks reflecting the characteristics of urban green spaces through domestic case studies and field trips. The classification of the reservoir parks is classified into 5 kinds such as ecological type, vegetation cover type, exercise facility type, underground burial type and hybrid type based on groundwater level, human use, and reservoir size. This classification system can be used to determine the types of facilities to be built after designating the location of future storage facilities.
From the continuous long-term rainfall-runoff standpoint, the urbanization within a watershed causes land use change due to the increase in impervious areas, the addition of manmade structures, and the changes in river environment. Therefore, rainfall-runoff characteristics changes drastically after the urbanization. Due to these reasons, there exists the demand for rainfall-runoff simulation model that can quantitatively evaluate the components of hydrologic cycle including surface runoff, river flow, and groundwater by considering urban watershed characteristics as well as natural runoff characteristics. In this study, continuous long-term rainfall-runoff simulation model SWAT-SWMM is developed by coupling semi-distributed continuous long-term rainfall-runoff simulation model SWAT with RUNOFF block of SWMM, which is frequently used in the runoff analysis of urban areas in order to consider urban watershed as well as natural watershed. The coupling of SWAT and SWMM is described with emphasis on the coupling scheme, model limitations, and the schematics of coupled model.

The purpose of this study was to understand the unique and complicated feature of urban stream receiving various inflows. The Yangjae stream, the second tier of the Han River, runs through the southern parts of Seoul, Korea and its middle part flows on the boundary of Seoul where land use is actively changing. Stream flow was greatly influenced by rainfall. Other than rainfall events, effluent discharge from wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) comprised 51 % of stream flux. As a result, majority ions water chemistry was changed at the receiving zone of the discharged effluent (Zone A). Its contribution increased to 69.9 % at the second sampling period with low stream flow. In the middle zone, inflows from the northern area, recently developed to a residential district showed low $NO_3-N$ and high $HCO_3$, Ca, $SO_4$, and $SiO_2$ indicating the effects of groundwater and concrete. One inflow (T-8), with extremely high Na and Cl, median $SiO_2$, was assessed to have anthropogenic influence, however its contribution to main stream was under 1 %. Road construction near Y-13 also affected water chemistry leading to the highest Na and Cl concentration. These hydro chemical changes can be critically used to evaluate the changes in water budget and fate of chemicals in a peri-urban watershed occasioned by human activities on the Yangjae.
With the rapidly increasing population density and development of infrastructure, the loss of life and property damage caused by landslides has increased gradually in urban area. Especially, Because Busan has high percentage of mountainous terrain among the metropolitan in Korea, it is unavoidable to develop mountainous region excessively. The objective of this evaluation is to study on landslide hazard possibility for Mt. Hwangryeong in Busan Metropolitan City using the infinite slope model considering the groundwater level. All data related to creating the thematic maps was carried out using ArcGIS 10.0. The results show that FS (Factor of Safety) for landslide is inversely proportional to groundwater level change as expected. Most area indicates stable state in dry condition, and unstable area increase due to high pore water pressure when the groundwater level rise. However, several places in high lineament density area where landslide has been previously occurred, are more stable than other places according to the analysis. This inconsistency between real situation and analysis results indicates that additional analytical method would be necessary to solve the problem. Therefore, we suggest that development of new infiltration theory for unsaturated zone would be helpful to evaluate groundwater level distribution as time goes by.
Water levels in groundwater monitoring wells of Jeju Island were analyzed using parametric and non-parametric trend analyses. Number of used monitoring wells in the analysis are 94 among totally 106 monitoring wells and the monitoring period is greater than single year, from 2001 to 2009. For the trend analysis, both parametric (linear regression) and nonparametric (Mann-Kendall trend test and Sen's trend test) methods were adopted. Results of the linear regression analysis on daily basis indicated that about 58.5% of the monitoring wells showed a decreasing trend, and analysis using monthly median indicated that about 79.8% showed a decreasing trend. The Mann-Kendall trend test and Sen's trend test with monthly median values in confidence levels of 95% and 99% showed the same analysis results. In confidence level of 95%, 32% were decreased, 3% were increased and the remains showed no trend. However, in confidence level of 99%, 16% were decreased, 2% were increased and the remains showed no trend. The largest decline rates of water levels were detected mainly at the coast of the northwestern and southwestern parts, which is expected to closely related to the increased pumping in the urban area and tourist resort.
Identifying the water circulation status is one of the indispensable processes for watershed management in an urban area. Recently, various water circulation models have been developed to simulate the water circulation, but it takes a lot of time and cost to make a water circulation model that could adapt the characteristics of the watershed. This paper aims to develop a water circulation state estimation model that could easily calculate the status of water circulation in an urban watershed by using multiple linear regression analysis. The study watershed is a watershed in Seoul that applied the impermeable area ratio in 1962 and 2000. And, It was divided into 73 watersheds in order to consider changes in water circulation status according to the urban characteristic factors. The input data of the SHER(Similar Hydrologic Element Response) model, a water circulation model, were used as data for the urban characteristic factors of each watershed. A total of seven factors were considered as urban characteristic factors. Those factors included annual precipitation, watershed area, average land-surface slope, impervious surface ratio, coefficient of saturated permeability, hydraulic gradient of groundwater surface, and length of contact line with downstream block. With significance probabilities (or p-values) of 0.05 and below, all five models showed significant results in estimating the water circulation status such as the surface runoff rate and the evapotranspiration rate. The model that was applied all seven urban characteristics factors, can calculate the most similar results such as the existing water circulation model. The water circulation estimation model developed in this study is not only useful to simply estimate the water circulation status of ungauged watersheds but can also provide data for parameter calibration and validation.

In this study, the fly ash was employed as a possible alternative to the bentonite for its high sorption capacity against cationic heavy metal. To consider the constituents of barrier possibly used, the specimens were mixed with different material contents (fly ash : weathered soil : bentonite), then sorption test was performed. Also the specimens were molded on the wet side of optimum moisture contents like mixing ratio of sorption test and their hydraulic conductivities were measured in flexible-wall permeameters. And to confirm the effect of dissolved cations, the hydraulic conductivity tests were repeated by converting the permeant liquids from water to $Cd^{2+}$ solution. Finally, the Cd-concentration at the effluent was analyzed for 500hrs to compare the effectiveness of each specimen in contaminant retardation. Test results showed that the more the ratio of fly ash increase, the more Kd value increase, and the hydraulic conductivity of weathered soil/bentonite (95:5) mixture was the lowest $(2.9*10^{-8}cm/sec)$, and specimens made of fly ash and fly ash/weathered soil mixtures showed similar hydraulic conductivity. Although the permeant liquid was changed from water to $Cd^{2+}$ solution, the hydraulic conductivity of all specimens except for weathered soil maintained similarly like before. Consequently, the initial breakthrough point of Cd in weathered soil specimen was observed at about 5hrs after the test started while that of fly ash specimens was not observed during the whole test period of 500hrs. The results implied that fly ash had a sufficient retardation capacity against contaminant transport possibly by its high sorption capacity although it showed little effect on the reduction of hydraulic conductivity. Based on the test results, it could be concluded that the fly ash can be possibly used as a suitable barrier material in containment system to attenuate the contaminant transport for its high retardation capacity and for the low cost.
