  • Distribution of fecal pollution indicator bacteria and environmental parameter were investigated of urban artificial lakes. An average concentration of temperature, pH, SS, DO, $COD_{Mn}$, T-P, T-N, Turbidity, Chl-a were $21.5^{\circ}C$, 8.07, 116.70 mg/l, 8.66 mg/l, 2.24 mg/1, 0.52 mg/l, 1.71mg/l, 80.54 NTU, and 52.12 mg/l respectively. From the results of bivariate correlation analysis, fecal contamination indicator bacteria were found to be mutually correlated. And turbidity and suspended solid were correlated. From the results of principal component analysis, four factors were extracted. And four factors of variance explained up to 81.5 percentage. Factor 1 was pollution pattern by fecal contamination, factor 2 was physical pollution pattern by pollution source, factor 3 was natural pollution by precipitation, and factor 4 was artificial pollution pattern by organism.

  • Total metals, soluble metals, and bioavailable metals were monitored at the sediments of urban lakes located in Seoul, Korea during spring season 2006. The metals measured were zinc, arsenic, chromium, copper, nickel, and cadmium, which are known to be toxic to human health and ecosystems. The main sources of heavy metals in the lakes were urban runoff and atmospheric deposition associated with air pollution in urban areas. Extraction by using a weak electrolyte solution (0.1 M $Ca(NO_3)_2$) was used to predict bioavailability of the metals. Among the six heavy metals studied, copper was the most bioavailable, based the weak electrolyte extraction techniques. Since metal toxicity is related to metal bioavailability, the results were consistent with the high ecotoxicity of copper, compared to other heavy metals. Overall results suggest that there was no direct relationship between total and bioavailable metal concentration, although zinc, copper and cadmium show some relationships.

  • In Korea most of annual rainfall is concentrated in several episodic heavy rains during the season of summer monsoon and typhoon. Because of uneven rainfall distribution many dams have been constructed in order to secure water supply in dry seasons. The Han River system has the most dams among Korean rivers, and the river is a series of dams now. Reservoirs need different strategy of water quality control from river water. Autochthonous organic matter and phosphorus should be the major target to be controlled in lakes. In this Paper some problems are discussed that makes efforts of water quality improvement ineffective in lakes of Korea, even after the substantial investment to wastewater treatment facilities.1) Phosphorus is the key factor controlling eutrophication of lakes and the reduction ofphosphors should be the major target of water treatment. However, water quality management strategy in Korea is still stream-oriented, and focused on BOD removal from sewage. Phosphorus removal efficiency remains as low as 10-30%, because biological treatment is adopted for both secondary treatment and advanced treatment. The standard for TP concentration of the sewage treatment plant effluent is 6 mgP/l in most of regions, and 2 mg/l in enforced region near metropolitan water intake point. TP in the effluents of sewage treatment plants are usually 1-2 mg/1, and most of plants meet the effluent regulation without a further phosphorus removal process. The generous TP standard for effluents discourages further efforts to improve phosphorus removal efficiency of sewage treatment. Considering that TP standard for the effluent is below 0.1 mg/l in some countries, it should be amended to below 0.1 mg/l in Korea, especially in the watershed of large lakes.2) Urban runoff and combined sewer overflow are not treated, even though their total loading into lakes can be comparable to municipal sewage discharges on dry days. Chemical coagulation and rapid settling might be the solution to urban runoff in regard of intermittent operation on only rainy days.3) Aggregated precipitation in Korea that is concentrated on several episodic heavyrains per year causes a large amount of nonpoint source pollution loading into lakes. It makes the treatment of nonpoint source discharge by methods of other countries of even rain pattern, such as retention pond or artificial wetland, impractical in Korea.4) The application rate of fertilizers in Korea is ten times as high as the average ofOECD countries. The total manure discharge from animal farming is thought to be over the capacity of soil treatment in Korea. Even though large portion of manure is composted for organic fertilizer, a lot of nutrients and organic matter emanates from organic compost. The reduction of application rate and discharge rate of phosphorus from agricultural fields should be encouraged by incentives and regulations.5) There is a lot of vegetable fields with high slopes in the upstream region of the HanRiver. Soil erosion is severe due to high slopes, and fertilizer is discharged in the form of adsorbed phosphorus on clay surface. The reduction of soil erosion in the upland area should be the major preventive policy for eutrophication. Uplands of high slope must be recovered to forest, and eroded gullies should be reformed into grass-buffered natural streams which are wider and resistant to bank erosion.

  • Chlorophyll-a is a major water quality indicator for an algal bloom in streams and lakes. The purpose of the study is to estimate chlorophyll-a concentration in tributaries of the Seonakdonggang by an artificial neural network (ANN). As the tributaries are ungauged streams, a watershed runoff and quality model was used to simulate water quality parameters. The tributary watersheds include urban area and thus Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) was used to simulate TN, TP, BOD, COD, and SS. SWMM, however, can not simulate chlorophyll-a. The chlorophyll-a series data from the tributaries were estimated by the ANN and the simulation results of water quality parameters using SWMM. An assumption used is as follows: the relation between water quality parameters and chlorophyll-a in the tributaries of the Seonakdonggang would be similar to that in the mainstream of the Seonakdonggang. On the assumption, the measurement data of water quality and chlorophyll-a in the mainstream of the Seonakdonggang were used as the learning data of the ANN. Through the sensitivity analysis, the learning data combination of water quality parameters was determined. Finally, chlorophyll-a series were estimated for tributaries of the Seonakdonggang by the ANN and TN, TP, BOD, COD, and temperature data from those streams. The relative errors between the estimated and measured chlorophyll-a were approximately 40 ~ 50%. Though the errors are somewhat large, the estimation process for chlorophyll-a may be useful in ungauged streams.

  • In this study, through the analysis of the growth condition and prey of the largemouth bass, we tried to understand the characteristics of the aquatic animal community depending on the composition and shape of a artificial lake. The evaluation was conducted for Ilsan lake which is one of the largest urban artificial lakes in Korea. Weight gain rate of the Zone III (eco-zone) was more rapid based on the relationship of length and weight of largemouth bass. Total 16 and 9 species of fish were found in each Zone III and Zone I, II (artificial zones), which represented significantly higher diversity of fish species in Zone III than Zone I, II. Index of relative importance(IRI) was more diverse at Zone III and when considering the hunger rate the food stress was more serious at Zone I, II. the proportion of the population of fish, Zacco platypus revealed to be the dominant species, and Squalidus gracilis majimae and Rhinogobius brunneus inhabited only Zone III naturally rich. On account of low prey species diversity of Zone I, II, the Phylum Arthropoda like Heteroptera showed relatively higher prey ratio in stomach of largemouth bass than that of Zone III. It was possible to figure out aquatic animal community characteristics indirectly through analyzing the stomach contents of largemouth bass.

  • Commercial buildings and institutions are predominantly cooled, thereby dissipating excess heat to a vertical ground heat exchanger (VGHE), than heat extracted over an annual cycle. Surface waters, such as lakes and ponds, provide a cost-effective means of reducing the VGHE length, and in balancing the thermal loads to the ground. This paper presents the measurement and analysis of the cooling performance of ground-coupled heat pump (GCHP) system, using surface water heat exchanger (SWHE) submerged in an artificial pond. In order to measure the performance of the system, we installed monitoring equipment, including sensors, for assessing the temperature and power consumption, after which the operation parameters were determined. The results from the thermal performance test for the SWHE indicate that the temperatures at the outlet of the SWHE and within the pond were affected by outdoor air temperature. In addition, the results reveal similar variation trends on temperatures; however, the peak temperatures of the SWHE were somewhat greater than those of outdoor air, due to the thermal capacity of the pond. Analyzing the cooling performance over the measurement period, the average coefficient of performance (COP) of heat pump was found to be 5.71, while that for the entire system was 2.99.

  • We analyzed research topics, temporal distribution of field sites, and researcher network of 1,508 limnology publications in the Korean Journal of Limnology (1968~2012) and the Korean Journal of Ecology and Environment (2013~2017). We found that water quality and sediment, phytoplankton, invertebrates, and fish were major subjects during the study periods. Survey of flora and fauna and physiological experiment of freshwater species were the largest subjects during 1970~80s, while other subjects including production, behavior, modeling, and ecological assessment have been rapidly increased since the 1990s. Most of the biological taxa equally studied lotic and lentic system, however, invertebrates and fish related studies more focused on the lotic system. Spatially, the field site of Korean limnology studies was found to be concentrated in main river channels runs through urban areas and artificial lakes than preserved natural areas. Freshwater system, located at the elevation range of 301~400 m (upstream of main channels), had the lowest number of field sites. Collaboration among researchers and different institution types have been steadily increased and expanded as the number of publications increased.
