  • Tubular joints having a large diameter are reinforced using internal ring stiffener in order to increase the load carrying capacity. In this study, the static strengths of Internally ring-stiffened tubular T-joints subjected to compressive brace loading are assessed. Nonlinear finite element analyses are used to compute the behavior of unstiffened and ring-stiffened T-joints. From the numerical results, Internal ring stiffener is found to efficient in improving the ultimate capacity, and reinforcement effect are calculated. The influence of geometric parameters for members and ring is evaluated. Based on the FE results, regression analysis is performed considering practical sizes of ring stiffener, finally strength estimation formulae for ring-stiffened T-joints are proposed.

  • An effective reinforcement method for steel tubular joints having a large chord diameter is the use of internal ring stiffeners. This paper presents the results of a numerical study on the static strength of internally ring-stiffened tubular X- and T-joints subjected to brace axial compression loading. Nonlinear finite element analyses are used to compute the joint strength. The influence of geometrical parameters has been studied and the maximum reinforcement effect of a ring stiffener has been evaluated. A strength ratio is defined. by the ratio of ring-stiffened joint strength to unstiffened joint strength, and an equation for this strength ratio is derived by regression analysis. Design optimization for ring stiffener of tubular joints is carried out using metropolis genetic algorithm.

  • A series of quasi-static crushing tests were carried out on thin-walled square tube specimens with axial and/or circumferential stiffeners including unstiffened specimens. The effective crushing length and mean crushing strength of the test specimens were investigated. Using the equivalent plate thickness approach, a simplified analytical model for predicting the mean crushing strength of stiffened square tubes has been developed.

  • This paper presents the optimum design of cylindrical shell under external pressure loading. Two kinds of material, Al7075-T6, Ti-6Al-4V, are considered. For each material, the design variable is a thickness of the unstiffened parallel middle body shell, and the state variable, constraint, is hoop stress and the object .function is total weight of the cylindrical shell. Optimization is performed by conventional FE Program, ANSYS. In addition, buckling analysis is performed for the middle body of the cylindrical shell. Finally, we calculates the payload of the cylindrical shell to keep neutral buoyancy with optimized thickness in deep-sea applications.

  • The end plate connection is applied to beam-column moment connections in various forms. Such end plate connection displays changes in the behavioral characteristics, strength and stiffness, and energy dissipation capacity based on the thickness and length of the end plate, the number and diameter of the high strength bolt, the gauge distance of the high strength bolt, prying action force of the high strength bolt, and dimensions and length of the welds. Accordingly, this study has apprehended the axial tensile stiffness and prying action force of the high strength bolt connected on the tensile side based on the difference in thickness of the end plate, and was conducted to propose an analysis model for the prediction of such variables that affect the operating properties of the end plate. To achieve this, this study has conducted a three-dimensional non-linear finite-element analysis of the unstiffened expanding end plate connection by selecting only the thickness of the end plate as the variable.

  • Since the propellant tank structure of the projectile is mainly subjected to a compressive force, there is a high risk of damage due to buckling. Large and lightweight structures such as propellant tank have a complex manufacturing process. So it requires a non-destructive test method to predict buckling load to use the structure after testing. Many studies have been conducted on Vibration Correlation Technique(VCT), which predicts buckling load using the relationship between compressive load and natural frequency, but it requires a large compressive load to predict the buckling load accurately, and it tends to decrease prediction accuracy with increasing internal pressure in structure. In this paper, we analyzed the causes of the decrease in prediction accuracy when internal pressure increases and proposed a method increasing prediction accuracy under the low compressive load for being usable after testing, through VCT combined testing and FEA result. The prediction value by the proposed method was very consistent with the measured actual buckling load.

  • The behaviors of steel-plate shear panels were investigated through an experimental and analytical study, using mild steel (S40). Steel-plate shear panels buckle at small loads, and their strength is based on the shear panel's postbuckling strength due to tension field action. In design practice, however, the capacity of steel-plate shear panels is limited to the elastic buckling strength of shear panels. Th e National Standard on Limit States Design of Steel Structures, CAN/CSA-S16.1-94 (1994) contains a guideline for the analysis of thi n, unstiffened, steel-plate shear walls using the strip model. In this paper, the structural capacity of shear panels was evaluated using the results of the experiment and of the strip model analysis.

  • In this study (Part I), an advanced empirical formulation was proposed to predict the ultimate strength of initially deflected steel plate subjected to longitudinal compression. An advanced empirical formulation was proposed by adopting Initial Deflection Index (IDI) concept for plate element which is a function of plate slenderness ratio (${\beta}$) and coefficient of initial deflection. In case of initial deflection, buckling mode shape, which is mostly assumed type in the ships and offshore industry, was adopted. For the numerical simulation by ANSYS nonlinear finite element method (NLFEM), with a total of seven hundred 700 plate scenarios, including the combination of one hundred (100) cases of plate slenderness ratios with seven (7) representative initial deflection coefficients, were selected based on obtained probability density distributions of plate element from collected commercial ships. The obtained empirical formulation showed good agreement ($R^2=0.99$) with numerical simulation results. The obtained outcome with proposed procedure will be very useful in predicting the ultimate strength performance of plate element subjected to longitudinal compression.

  • In current European Standard EN 1993, the moment-rotation characteristics of beam-to-column joints made from steel with a yield stress > 460MPa are obtained from elastic design procedures. The strength of the joint basic components, such as the column web subject to local transverse compression, is thus limited to the yield resistance rather than the plastic resistance. With the recent developments of higher strength steel grades, the need for these restrictions should be revisited. However, as the strength of the steel is increased, the buckling characteristics become more significant and thus instability phenomena may govern the design. This paper summarizes a comprehensive set of finite element parametric studies pertaining to the strength behaviour of high-strength steel unstiffened I-columns in transverse compression. The paper outlines the implementation and validation of a three-dimensional finite element model and presents the relevant numerical test results. The finite element predictions are evaluated against the strength values anticipated by the EN 1993 for conventional steel columns and recommendations are made for revising the specifications.

  • A new measuring technique for the rigidities of stiffened plated is presented. The equations relating the rigidities of stiffened plates and the natural frequencies of a cantilever plate are derived and the rigidities are determined using the measured natural frequencies of the plate. The static deflection tests are conducted for checking the validity of this method. For unstiffened plates the measured rigidities are good agreement with the theoretical values and the experimental results of deflection tests. In the case of stiffened plates the measured rigidities closely matched with the results of deflection tests. It has been also demonstrated that this measuring technique can be utilized in determining the rigidities of arbitrarily stiffened plates.
