  • Limit cycle oscillations (LCO) as well as nonlinear aeroelastic analysis of a swept aircraft wing with cubic restoring moments in the pitch degree of freedom is investigated. The unsteady aerodynamic loading applied on the wing is modeled by using the strip theory. The harmonic balance method is used to calculate the LCO frequency and amplitude for the swept wing. Finally the super and subcritical Hopf bifurcation diagrams are plotted. It is concluded that the type of bifurcation and turning point location is sensitive to the system parameters such as wing geometry and sweep angle.

  • This study predicted broadband noise from a generic 2.5MW wind turbine blade in the time domain. The rotor blade was modeled as thin rectangular flat plates. A simplified analytic model proposed by Amiet was used to model the unsteady surface pressure distribution. The acoustic pressure was calculated by using the loading term of Formulation 1A proposed by Farassat. The validation was also performed by comparing with an experiment of Brooks, Pope, and Marcolini. By using these numerical methods, the broadband noise signal of the wind turbine was successfully predicted in this study.

  • Tidal-current power is now recognized as a clean power resource. The turbine blade is the fundamental component of a tidal current power turbine. The kinetic energy available within a tidal current can be converted into rotational power by turbine blades. While in service, turbine blades are generally subjected to cyclic fatigue loading due to their rotation and the rotor-tower interaction. Predicting the fatigue life under a hydrodynamic fatigue load is very important to prevent blade failure while in service. To predict the fatigue life, hydrodynamic load data should be acquired. In this study, the vibration characteristics were analyzed based on three-dimensional unsteady simulations to obtain the cyclic fatigue load. Our results can be applied to the fatigue design of horizontal-axis tidal turbines.

  • The unsteady evolution of trailing vortex sheets behind wings in close formation flight near the ground is simulated using a discrete vortex method. The ground effect is included by an image method. The method is validated by comparing computed results with other numerical results. For a lifting line with an elliptic loading, the ground has an effect of moving wingtip vortices laterally outward and suppressing the development of vortex evolution. The gap between wings in close formation flight has an effect of moving up wingtip vortices facing each other. For wings flying in parallel, the ground effect causes the wingtip vortices facing each other to move up, and it makes the opposite wing tip vortices to move laterally outward. When there is a relative height between the wings in ground effect, right-hand side wingtip vortices from a mothership move laterally inward.

  • A two-dimensional Navier-Stokes code based on AUSMPW+ scheme has been developed to simulate the hypersonic flowfield of hypersonic shock-shock interaction. AUSMPW+ scheme is a new hybrid flux splitting scheme, which is improved by introducing pressure-based weight functions to eliminate the typical drawbacks of AUSM-type schemes, such as non-monotone pressure solutions. To study the real gas effects, three different gas models are taken into account in this paper: perfect gas, equilibrium flow and nonequilibrium flow. It has been investigated how each gas model influences on the peak surface loading, such as wall pressure and wall heat transfer, and unsteady flowfield structure in the region of shock-shock interaction. With the results, the value of peak pressure is not sensitive to the real gas effects nor to the wall catalyticity. However, the value of peak heat transfer rates is affected by the real gas effects and the wall catalyticity. The structure of the flowfield also changes drastically in the presence of real gas effects.

  • This study presents unsteady and unstable characteristics of three stage transonic axial compressor, developed by Korea Aerospace Research Institute. As approaching to the unstable operating region at the 103% design speed of the compressor, a modal type stall precursor appears in front of highly loaded 3rd rotor row at first, and it propagates to the upstream. On the contrary, actual stall cell initiates from the stall precursor in front of the 1st rotor row, and it propagates to the downstream of the compressor. After the stall region reached the 3rd stage and stall cell rotates circumferentially about 360 deg, it develops to one dimensional compressor surge mode. It shows a mild surge behaviour with 3~4 Hz frequency. From the test data, it can be suggested that there is a priority to give an optimum blade loading distributions to construct a multi stage transonic axial compressor stages either to secure more stable compressor operating ranges, or to maximize the compressor efficiency.

  • The present paper shows the results of numerical and experimental modal analyses of Francis runners, which were executed in air and in still water. In its first part this paper is focused on the numerical prediction of the model parameters by means of FEM and the validation of the FEM method. Influences of different geometries on modal parameters and frequency reduction ratio (FRR), which is the ratio of the natural frequencies in water and the corresponding natural frequencies in air, are investigated for two different runners, one prototype and one model runner. The results of the analyses indicate very good agreement between experiment and simulation. Particularly the frequency reduction ratios derived from simulation are found to agree very well with the values derived from experiment. In order to identify sensitivity of the structural properties several parameters such as material properties, different model scale and different hub geometries are numerically investigated. In its second part, a harmonic response analysis is shown for a Francis runner by applying the time dependent pressure distribution resulting from an unsteady CFD simulation to the mechanical structure. Thus, the data gained by modern CFD simulation are being fully utilized for the structural design based on life time analysis. With this new approach a more precise prediction of turbine loading and its effect on turbine life cycle is possible allowing better turbine designs to be developed.
