  • The study purported to develop STS education course material at the university level in order to enhance science literacy and understanding of the relationships among science, technology and society. A developed STS course was provided to 265 freshmen and sophomore students, majoring in the Humanities and the Social Sciences, the Natural Sciences and Engineering, and Fine Arts. Students participated in the survey examining changes in students' attitudes toward and perspectives on STS before and after the implementation. Ten questionnaires were selected from VOSTS for the survey. One additional questionnaire asked the students to elaborate their opinions on the need for a STS education course. The responses to the survey were analyzed according to types of questions and students' majors. As result, the developed STS course significantly increased students' science literacy. Among the participants, 97.7% responded that there is a need for STS education and provided reasons for such need. These results imply that there is a definite need for a STS class at the university level. According to the analyses of responses, there were different responses depending on the students' major. These differences imply that the major, academic background, level of interest in science, and knowledge of science of the students affect their perceptions on identifying the need for a STS education course.

  • Ojectives: This study performed to analyze health promotion factors related to subjective stress level among first-year students of university. Methods: To examine the association with subjective stress level and health promotion factors, health survey was conducted with 3,892 students who were first-year students in an university by self-reported questionnaire from February 26 to March 10, 2015 in an university. Multiple regression analysis performed to identify the difference of health promotion factors by subjective stress level. Results: 1,015 students (26.1%) were on high stress level and 2,110 students (54.2%) were in healthy status. The 10.8% of them was obesity group and the 40% was alcohol use disorder group. The 8.2% had experienced depression in the last 1 year. In multiple regression models, it remained significantly the difference of subjective stress level by sex, subjective health status, sleep hours in a day, eating frequency of fruit and vegetable in a day, depression experience and suicidal thought in the last 1 year(p<0.05, p<0.01). On the other hand, it was not significant the difference by age, BMI, alcohol use disorder, eating breakfast, regular exercise and current smoking. Conclusions: To improve health promotion of first-year students of university, it should provide the intensive mental health program to women on campuses.

  • This study was undertaken to explain weight control behavior and intention of obese children and adolescents as measured by the elements of the health belief model. A total of 732 obese students from 28 schools in Seoul metropolitan area and their mothers were assessed with a self-administered questionnaire. The analyzed results are as follows; 1. Among obese students, 45.3% of male students and 57.2% of female students, a significantly higher portion than male students, reported that they had tried to lose weight within the recent year. Exercise was the most frequently used method to lose weight followed by diet control, drug use, and specialized clinic visits, in descending order. 2. Male students were more likely to try to lose weight if they perceived a low threat level and their mother had a job, and female students were more likely to try to lose weight if they were younger in age, perceived a low threat level and had strong external motivating factors. 3. Female students showed a significantly higher level of intention to obesity control than male students, and the intention level of their mothers also showed the same trend. 4. In male students, the degree of weight dissatisfaction, weight control experience, the level of obesity related beliefs of students, the educational level of the mother and economic status of the family were significant predictors of intention to obesity control, and in females, age, the level of obesity related beliefs of students and intention of their mothers were significant. In the mothers of male students, obesity index of students, age of the mother and the level of obesity related beliefs of the mother were significant predictors of intention of the mother, and in the mothers of female students, obesity index of students, occupational status of the mother and obesity related beliefs of the mother were significant. 5. According to the path model of intention to obesity control, the degree of weight dissatisfaction had the most powerful effect in male students, and perceived net benefit level was the most important variable in female students. Since the weight control behavior and intention of obese students were more predictable by the degree of weight dissatisfaction than the obesity index, we can conclude that only the students dissatisfied with their weight are well motivated for obesity control. There can be a discrepancy between the mother and her child's beliefs and intention status(especially in male students), so the therapists should also assess the student's opinion as well as the mother's. In female students, the perceived net benefit level wag the most important predictor of intention to obesity control, therefore the intervention program should pay particular attention to the positive benefits of weight control rather than negative aspects(threats) of obesity.

  • Middle and high school students' conceptual understanding about stoichiometry, gas laws, and diffusion was compared with essay type test and multiple choice test. Whereas achievement of high school students was higher in stoichiometry, that of middle school students who were expected to go to high schools was higher in gas laws and diffusion. When students' achievement was compared to that of American college students, Korean students' achievement was higher in stoichiometry and was similar in gas laws. These results indicate that algorithmic problem solving is more emphasized than conceptual understanding in high schools and that quantitative aspects focused in chemistry education are not helpful in concept understanding. Nevertheless relatively smaller difference between concept understanding and algorithmic problem solving for high school students in this study seems to be from concept learning in middle schools.

  • The purpose of this study is to assess gifted students' conceptions about nature of science (NOS). Scientifically gifted students who are expected to be professionals in the future should possess an adequate understanding of NOS that if firm foundation for scientific career. 47 volunteers from the 8th grade gifted science program in Seoul National University Gifted Education Center participated to answer questions inquiring NOS conceptions. Their answers were analyzed and compared to different groups such as non-gifted students and younger gifted students. As a result, gifted students' understanding of NOS appeared to surpass that of non-gifted students in many aspects and it seemed that gifted students formed their NOS view in early ages. The relative weakness in their NOS conceptions was found in understanding of scientific enterprise. Their strong misunderstanding about obstacles that minority people would face in scientific enterprise was noticed, too. They admitted that there has been discrimination in scientific enterprise, but they wrongly believed that outstanding scientists cannot be affected by it. Further studies will be required to probe more.

  • This paper analyzes the difficulties with the learning of sequence and series of the second-year students who participated in a year long whole class at the university level. The research was carried out at the end of students' third semester. These students were randomly selected. They were applied to one paper and pencil test containing eight task items on sequence and series. In this study, qualitative method (case study design) was used to explore students' difficulties and misunderstandings in learning sequence and series. Students' responses to the questions were divided into three categories: These were "correct", "partial correct" and "false or no responses". Students' responses to the paper and pencil test were evaluated. The results show that students had difficulties and misunderstandings in series and sequence.
