  • In the rapidly aging society, the number of wheelchair users is increasing steadily. On the other hand, it is almost impossible for a disabled person using a wheelchair to use express buses. Therefore, it is necessary to develop an express bus that can secure the rights of wheelchair users. For these special types of express buses, it is required to develop a special entrance and lift system. The development of a wheelchair entrance system for the express buses requires design modification, retrofit, and reinforcement of the bus frame. This study evaluated the structural integrity of an entrance system for wheelchair users using a finite element method. Torsional stiffness and modal analysis were performed through structural analysis. Through sensitivity analysis, optimization was performed to reduce the weight of the frame. These results on the wheelchair entrance system are expected to be utilized in the vehicle modification and welfare industries.

  • The objective of study was carried out to find a proper entrance date for breaking dormancy depending on cutting and entrance date into greenhouse investigating plant growth and flowering characteristics of chrysanthemum 'Baekma'. Days to visible bud formation and days to flowering were increased as cutting date was delayed. The flowering rate of cutting on September 18 was 100% while cutting on October 30 did not induce flower bud formation. Flower characteristics were surveyed after 'Baekma' and 'Jinba' rooted cuttings were planted on September 10. Branching formation rate of 'Baekma' was gradually increased as entrance date was delayed while that of 'Jinba' was about 70-80% regardless of entrance date. Lethality of 'Baekma' moving into greenhouse on December 20 was 1.5% by cold injury. 'Jinba' started to die on November 10 by cold injury and lethality of 'Jinba' moving into greenhouse on December 20 was 21.7%. Thus, lethality of 'Jinba' was about 5-14 times higher than that of 'Baekma'. Days to visible bud formation and days to flowering were decreased as entrance date was delayed in chrysanthemum 'Baekma'. Days to visible bud formation of entrance date on November 10 and December 10 were 67.9 and 50.3, respectively. On the other hand, that of 'Jinba' was increased until entrance date on December 10 and decreased on December 20. Based on these results, it was suggested that dormancy of 'Baekma' was started at late September and completed at late October.

  • This study attempted to identify the entrance exam stress levels in high school students and analyze the relationship this entrance exam stress and perceived oral health status. Self-administered survey was conducted in total 304 students attending in academic high schools in Bucheon. For analysis, SPSS was used to perform t-test and one-way ANOVA. As a result of the study, the entrance exam stress level of academic high school students was 2.71. The level of sub-factors were that tension for exam/poor result was highest by 3.08 and the next were future uncertainty (2.81), parents pressure (2.56), and insufficient free time (2.52). The group with high entrance exam stress showed significantly high perceived degrees of temporomandibular disorder, oral mucosal disease and xerostama. Among sub-factors of stress, the group with high tension for exam/poor result stress had significantly high perceived degrees of dental caries, teporomandibular disorder, oral mucosal disease and xerostama. Because perception on oral health issues increased with high entrance exam stress in high school students, it is necessary to seek some ways to decrease oral health problems even though entrance exam stress is intensified. To do so, it is inferred that it will be very important to promote oral health education to develop ability of high school students to practice correct oral management method.

  • The length of the acceleration lane in the area of entrance terminals is calculated based on 13 PS/ton horsepower of a cargo truck in Korea, so it is generally overestimated compared with the capacity of most vehicles traveling on an entrance ramp. Most drivers have, therefore, an indiscreet tendency to enter the main lane in all sections of an acceleration lane, which affects the traffic flow of the main lane. Because of this tendency, measures are required to minimize the impact on traffic flow of the main lane. The operating speed, rate of entrance, and traffic volume for each vehicle were investigated at the entrance terminals of the interchanges (ICs) of Yangji IC, Suseok IC, Yongin IC, and Osan IC, and the level of improvement in traffic flow was analyzed via VISSIM simulation. From the VISSIM simulation analysis, 74.0 % of the total vehicles traveled over the specified speed from the nose point where drivers would be able to recognize the traffic condition of the main carriageway, or the point at which there is a simplification of the curve section. In addition, 88.6 % of the vehicles entered the main carriageway up to 0.8 points compared with the entire length of the acceleration lane. It was subsequently found that an improvement of average speed in the main carriageway and at the entrance ramp can be achieved from 60.1 km/h to 68.5 km/h by intentionally limiting the entrance point onto the main carriageway up to 0.265 points of the entrance ramp.

  • We placed and monitored 2,137 nest boxes to determine how the size of the entrance hole and the box placement influenced nest box selection by secondary cavity-nesting birds and to derive recommendations for the use of nest boxes for management of cavity-nesting birds in forested environments. A total of 566 pairs of seven bird species used the nest boxes from 1997 to 2006, 562 of which were secondary cavity-nesters. Sympatric tits such as varied tits (Parus varius), great tits (P. major), and marsh tits (P. palustris) were common breeding birds in nest boxes, and showed clear preferences for 4.0 cm, 3.5 cm and 3.0 cm nest holes, respectively. Tree sparrows (Passer montanus) and Eurasian nuthatches (Sitta europaea) preferred 4 cm and 3.5 cm holes, respectively. We did not detect selection for the directional orientation for the entrance hole, but the birds appeared to avoid nest boxes that faced steep or gentle upward slopes and those less than 1.8 m from the ground. These results are probably related to avoidance of disturbance and predation. We suggest that diverse species can be supported by the placement of nest boxes with entrance holes of various sizes and that specific species can be targeted by selecting the hole sizes preferred by those species. To attract secondary cavity-nesters, managers should avoid placing nest boxes close to the ground and facing hills. This study also suggests that careful selection and placement of nest boxes is needed to avoid biases in research using nest boxes.

  • While graduates of Japan's technical high schools might demonstrate skills in a given specialty, they would be hard-pressed in any attempt to pass national universities' notorious entrance examinations. In a collaborative effort begun in 1994, the faculties of engineering at Niigata, Nagasaki, and Toyama Universities set about the task of preparing entrance examinations, and a general curriculum geared to the needs and educational backgrounds of these students, offering them supplementary lessons. While the larger project officially ended in 1999, we are carrying the research forward in Niigata University.
