  • This paper presents the design of a multiple beam optical tweezers instrument used for manipulating micro/nano-sized components. The basic equations used in designing the optical tweezers are derived and the stable and time-sharing multiple beam optical tweezers are constructed with scanning mirrors. The laser beam passes through a series of optical components such as lenses, mirrors, and scanning mirrors, and overfills the entrance aperture of microscope objective, which gives a stable trap. By rotating the laser beam with the scanning mirror, the focal positions are translated in the specimen plane and multiple micro/nano-sized objects can be moved. The constructed optical tweezers is used to manipulate cells and liposomes simultaneously and to trap multiple nano-wires. The experiments prove that the developed optical tweezers can be a very versatile manipulation tool for studying gene therapy and nano device fabrication.

  • Purpose: The aim of the study is to provide information about selecting school sites for new schools in congested urban areas and to propose a method to manage harmful environments around primary and secondary schools. Method: Four schools were selected around Gilum New Town and Ilsan City. The problems were identified by counting the businesses classified as harmful and prohibited in a school zone through surveying, collecting reports from relevant sources, and asking questions of authorities in school districts. Results: It was found that many harmful businesses prohibited by the Law of School Health were present in the safe zone of schools in both Ilsan city and Gilum New Town. The school site of Bohyun Elementary School was classified as poor because there was a steep ascent at the entrance and the school was surrounded by a dangerous, steep boundary. We suggested that an education and environment assessment system by completed before the school site was selected. Conclusion: There is a urgent need to improve the approval and permission process of harmful businesses as well as regulatory standards of school site selection in the light of the shortage of land.

  • Mombasa is the principle port of Kenya, serving hinter countries in Eastern and central Africa. Mombasa port has undergone a massive infrastructure upgrade and dredging works with an expectation that more vessels and large post Panamax ships will be able to call at Mombasa port. Therefore, it is vital to carry out a marine traffic risk assessment so as to quantify the degree of navigation safety on Mombasa approach channel and also to evaluate navigation risk imposed on transit traffic by local ferry traffic. In this paper marine traffic risk assessment is carried out using IWRAP mk2, Environmental Stress model, and PARK model. Risk assessment results show that Likoni area has unacceptable stress/ risk ranking at 20.7% on ES model and 38.89% by PARK model. IWRAP mk2 model shows that crossing area has the highest risk of crossing collision and the area at the entrance to inner channel has a high risk of grounding. The conclusions derived from this study will provide the basis for proposing the most effective countermeasure so as to improve navigation safety in Mombasa approach channel.

  • It is indispensable to grasp the turning ability of a ship to operate her effectively. For this purpose, the author measured the turning ability of training ship, A-RA by use of bow thruster and stem rudder. The turning ability of this ship, in case of using both of stem rudder and bow thruster at the same time, caused by increase of steering angle provides more influence to the size of tactical diameter than it caused by the power of bow thruster. But the influence of bow thruster on the turning ability is available only within rudder angle $5^{\circ}\;-\;10^{\circ}$, so it is possible to grasp that the effect of bow truster is reduced as rudder angle become bigger. In case of the influence of bow thruster by her speed, the ability of bow thruster is very effective at low speed, but it is almost not available in normal turning speed. Therefore, the using both of stem rudder and bow thruster can be useful in case of low speed proceeding at entrance or departure of the narrow waterway or inside port which sea traffic is congest for collision avoidance.

  • When humans explore the Moon, lunar caves will be an ideal base to provide a shelter from the hazards of radiation, meteorite impact, and extreme diurnal temperature differences. In order to ascertain the existence of caves on the Moon, it is best to visit the Moon in person. The Google Lunar X Prize(GLXP) competition started recently to attempt lunar exploration missions. Ones of those groups competing, plan to land on a pit of Lacus Mortis and determine the existence of a cave inside this pit. In this pit, there is a ramp from the entrance down to the inside of the pit, which enables a rover to approach the inner region of the pit. In this study, under the assumption of the existence of a cave in this pit, a 3D model was developed based on the optical image data. Since this model simulates the actual terrain, the rendering of the model agrees well with the image data. Furthermore, the 3D printing of this model will enable more rigorous investigations and also could be used to publicize lunar exploration missions with ease.

  • The long-period gravity wave, the wave period from some ten seconds to some minutes, induces not only the big sway of a ship moored and berthed in the harbor due to the horizontal long-distance motion of a water but also strong exfoliated flow and vortices near the harbor entrance. They muse serious problems on the safety navigation of vessels entering and leaving the harbor, but this gravity wave has not been searched sufficiently yet. Then it is quite important to reveal the characteristics of this long-period gravity wave ana to solve various problems induced by this wave. The long-period gravity wave measurement system with arrayed buoys installed the kinematic GPS was already proposed, which provides the precise propagating direction of the long-period gravity wave. In this paper, the observation results of the wave measurement system are shown by the MUSIC method And the propagating wave direction was estimated precisely enough in comparison with other results used other method.
