A universal design means a progressive and challenging design in the 21st century which can satisfy the demands from not only aged people and disabled people but also numerous members of our society. This research aims to apply a universal design commonly used in architecture (environment) and products to costumes, so as to convert the design into a universal fashion which can meet the aesthetic values, desires, and functionality of aged people and disabled women. After applying the said five universal fashion principles and design factors, a total of 20 pieces of universal fashion prototype products are produced through functional designs and designs utilizing knit materials and health & functionality materials. In addition, a direction to develop universal fashion products is suggested for costume manufacturers, for the purpose of facilitating the practical use of a universal fashion. The present author expects that human-centered universal fashion costumes shall propose the orientation of the interest in future new designs, beyond the scope of a jump in the quality of simple functional costumes.

Currently, in Korea, the number of handicapped children receiving inclusive education in general schools is expanding. In the inclusive education field, the most important tasks are personal needs support, such as toilet assistance, meal assitance, and support for wearing and taking off various assistive devices. A significant portion of the support work in the actual education field is related to clothing. Therefore, it is necessary to research and develop universal fashion designs for handicapped children at school where inclusive education is implemented. To achieve this aim, this study analyzed the concepts, principles and, characteristics of universal fashion design through theoretical research and established research principles. In this study, two fact-finding surveys were conducted. Next, a total of 10 universal fashion designs were proposed considering both the preceding survey results and the principles of universal fashion design Among them, the four designs that were considered most suitable were selected for universal fashion design through F.G.I (Focus Group Interview) analysis conducted by experts. The four selected designs were made by referring to the size framework based on the '6th Human Body Size Survey Report of Korea'. The completed experimental clothes were proposed as the final universal fashion design for handicapped children by conducting external evaluation through a virtual clothing system and real clothes.

Nowadays the numbers of the disabled and elderly have been increasing, and the universal design is desperately in demand. The purpose of this study was to offer ideas and solutions for the universal fashion design. The concept and the principles of universal design have been examined and principles of universal fashion design were suggested: low physical effort, flexibility in use, fair in use, aesthetics, safely-oriented, affordability, and accessibility. Eighteen web sites were investigated and the universal fashion products were analyzed based on these principles. Well developed universal fashion design products will help individuals to obtain the quality of life, maintain the dignity, and make the access to the world a little bit easier.

In this study, the fashion show of the disabled was hold for the universal fashion through the clothes which has relationship with personal mentality and behavior. There are several outcome of the fashion show. First of all, the main outcome is that through the fashion show the disabled fret that there is no difference between them and the ordinary people. Also, it is necessary to the revitalize the product development with universal fashion design. Secondly, the systematic succeeding study is necessary to solve the problem of the disabled and to set up the database management system in order to have a general idea for the their actual living condition and essentials of life for the disabled. Thirdly, even though the main purpose of the fashion show was to give them an opportunity to live fairly as a human being within their society, after the show, the necessity of social system to solve the additional problems and to continue the mental satisfaction comes. Fourthly, the disable have a tendency not to wear the special clothes for them since they want to be seen as the ordinary person. Finally, I suggest that there must be revitalization of a special design and the product development to reflect above mentioned points in addition to ordinary clothes.

The number of elderly citizens has risen in Korea and resulted in an aging society. Correspondingly, the social interest in the aging population has escalated immensely; however, research or product development on the quality of life for seniors has shortcomings. Healthcare smart clothing is required to help the elderly with changes and weaknesses that follow aging; however, there is unfortunately insufficient amounts available. This study explores the feasibilities of smart clothing for seniors based on a universal design. Based on previous research, we analyzed the universal design theory, body shape characteristics and design requirements for seniors, and heart rate measurement method. The design is different according to body shape and body shape is different between sex, age, and body race; therefore, subjects were limited to 70-74 year old Korean males in this study. This study proposes a guideline for heart rate sensing clothing that satisfies the 'universal design' aspects as well as the functionality of heart sensing, senior's physical characteristics and needs. It has broadened the range of smart clothing, which was once limited to the younger generation and provided a foundation for the development of specialized smart clothing for seniors.

Nowadays the numbers of the aging population are rapidly increasing in Korea, which became the 'aged country' from the year 2000. These aged people are getting more important consumer group and the products and services related to the silver industry are getting bigger. Universal fashion design is based on the concept of universal design that pursues the 'design for all'. This study aims to understand the physical, physiological, and psychological characteristics of the elderly women and apply the principles of universal design to universal fashion design for the elderly. Korean traditional vest, 'Baeja' was used as the design inference for the target of age 55 and older. This group is also called as 2Y2R(too young to retire), Tonk(too only no kids), Y-O(young-old) generation, or OPAL(old people with active life). Principles of universal design such as accessibility, flexibility in use, fair in use, aesthetics, safely-oriented were applied in developing the vest. This universal fashion products enable the elderly to have physical independence and make them have the self respect and better life.

This paper enables stakeholders involved in textile industry to gain an overview of standards used for care labelling and help establish a common standard that could be used as a universal standard. This study provides a comprehensive and detailed analytical study of care labelling standards adopted by common countries in the textile market. It was found that the development of a universal system for care labeling could enhance the trade of textile articles and assist consumers in caring for textile articles. Universal care label systems could be characterized by two main features of inclusiveness and comprehensiveness. The range of instructions and symbols presented were found different among standards. Insignificant differences in symbols' shapes were found between standards for bleaching, ironing and professional cleaning. The washing process had the widest variety of instructions; in addition, options were provided by stated standards. Different meanings were found for similar shapes in some tumble drying symbols. The study findings show the importance of enhancing text based standards or the development of an understandable format across as many cultures as possible. The unification of symbols and meanings may be needed to provide global consumers consistent guidance. The efficiency of a detailed standard that provides and covers a wide range of instructions is an important aspect. The visibility and practicality of offering variable options/symbols in one standard is an important aspect for developing a universal care label system.
