Structure and Antibiotic Activity of a Porcine Myeloid Antibacterial Peptide, PMAP-23 and its Analogues

  • PMAP-23 is a 23-residue antimicrobial peptide derived from porcine myloid cells. In order to investigate the effects of two Pro residues at positions 12 and 15 of PMAP-23 on antibiotic activity, two analogues in which Ala was substituted for Pro residue at position 12 or 15 were synthesized. $Pro^{12}{\rightarrow}Ala$ (PMAPl) or $Pro^{15}{\rightarrow}Ala$(PMAP2) substitution in PMAP-23 caused a significant reduction on antitumor and phospholipid vesicle-disrupting activities, but did not cause a significant effect on antibacterial activity. PMAP-23 displayed the type I ${\beta}-turn$ structure with a negative ellipticity at near 205 om in SDS micelle, whereas PMAP1 and PMAP2 had a somewhat ${\alpha}-helical$ propensity in TFE solution, as compared to PMAP-23. These results suggest that two Pro residues of positions 12 and 15 in PMAP-23 play important roles in the formation of ${\beta}-turn$ structure on lipid membrane and its ${\beta}-turn$ structure may be essential for antibiotic activity including phospholipid vesicle-disrupting property.

Extraction of similar XML data based on XML structure and processing unit

  • XML has established itself as the format for data exchange on the internet and the volume of its instance is large scale. Therefore, to extract similar information from XML instance is one of research topics but is insufficient. In this paper, we extract similar information from various kind of XML instances according to the same goal. Also we use only the structure information of XML instance for information extraction because some of XML instance is described without its schema. In order to efficiently extract similar information, we propose a minimum unit of processing and two approaches for finding the unit. The one is a structure-based method which uses only the structure information of XML instance and another is a measure-based method which finds a unit by numerical formula. Our two approaches can be applied to any application that needs the extraction of similar information based on XML data. Also the approach can be used for HTML instance.

A 6-bit 3.3GS/s Current-Steering DAC with Stacked Unit Cell Structure

  • This paper presents a new DAC design strategy to achieve a wideband dynamic linearity by increasing the bandwidth of the output impedance. In order to reduce the dominant parasitic capacitance of the conventional matrix structure, all the cells associated with a unit current source and its control are stacked in a single column very closely (stacked unit cell structure). To further reduce the parasitic capacitance, the size of the unit current source is considerably reduced at the sacrifice of matching yield. The degraded matching of the current sources is compensated for by a self-calibration. A prototype 6-bit 3.3-GS/s current-steering full binary DAC was fabricated in a 1P9M 90 nm CMOS process. The DAC shows an SFDR of 36.4 dB at 3.3 GS/s Nyquist input signal. The active area of the DAC occupies only $0.0546mm^2$ (0.21 mm ${\times}$ 0.26 mm).

  • In this study, an experimental and numerical analysis on the flow characteristics of heating and cooling unit installed within ceiling with functional modules was carried out. And the flow characteristics of the heating and cooling unit was investigated with the main parameters such as each filter and inside structure. The experimental results show the possibility of medium filter application. And the numerical results show that the effect of improved inside structure of heating-cooling and air-conditioning unit on flow distribution.

Primary School Children단s Knowledge Structure Changes: Observed on Concept Maps for the Unit of 단Structure and Function of Plant단 (식물의 구조와 기능단 단원의 학습과정에서 초등학교 아동들의 지식구조의 변화)

  • This study examined the knowledge structure constructed by children before formal instruction, and successive changes in the structural complexity of knowledge during the learning of the 'Structure and Function of Plants' unit. The researchers let the 5th graders draw the first draft of their concept maps in order to examine the pre-existing knowledge structure concerned with the unit and also four concept maps after completing every fourth lesson. Each concept map drawn by children on the basis of the previous one showed the degree of their current understanding on the structure and function of plants. The results revealed that only two levels of hierarchy and five relationships among the components of the first concept map(relationship, hierarchy, cross link and example) were proven to be valid in terms of conceptual relevance. According to the standard map, there was no change in hierarchy from the 2nd to the 3rd map, and in example from the 2nd to the 4th map. However, the gradual and successive increases of the scores in all components appeared in the children's maps throughout the unit. Knowledge restructuring occurred strongly in the early periods from the 1st to the 6th lesson, and the significant stable changes in tuning and accretion appeared throughout the whole lessons. The results also showed that there were no significant gender differences on the 5th grader's knowledge structuring.

  • The design of rainwater storage system unit to manufacture its reservoir tank was tried, the simulation to predict of their structural strength was carried out. Rainwater storage system unit should be easy to their machinability, transport and assemble. Especially, their structure was able to secure the water storage space, withstand loads and easily response to pollution. Considering these various requirements, they have to Doria-pillar structure of the Roman architectural style because these designs could disperse the loads which are applied to them. Therefore, the six kinds of models possible were proposed. Several boundary conditions were given to each model. Their structural strength was predicted through the simulation on their stress and the displacement distribution to constant load. From the evaluated data, the structure which has a large pillar in the central of unit and four small pillars each corner was the best.

  • Sandwich structure is widely used in various fields of industry due to its excellent strength and stiffness compared with weight. We studied the sandwich structure which has honeycomb core type. We are concerned about its buckling and bending stress with respect to its side length, thickness and the height ratio of its unit core. After obtaining the buckling critical load of unit core, we applied it to the sandwich structure to observe the bending behavior. When we compared the buckling with bending stress under buckling critical load, we observed that models of which length ratio of unit honeycomb core, A, is lower than 0.04 and the thickness of core, t, is thicker than 0.09 mm, is subjected to the ultimate stress by bending before buckling.

  • The technical development of electric vehicles has been actively proceeding because of the reduction of oil resources and need for eco-friendly vehicle technology. In particular, an electronic control unit is an important element in the technology of electric vehicles due to the motor drive system. This paper concerns an experimental study on the thermal analysis of the steering control ECU structure for an electric vehicle. The ECU unit is designed for eight heat sinks for the thermal analysis of the ECU structure. The thermal analysis characteristics of the ECU structure are evaluated by the temperature distribution, heat flow, von Mises stress, total translation, and external surface temperature measurement of the ECU unit.

Efficient Motion Information Representation in Splitting Region of HEVC (HEVC의 분할 영역에서 효율적인 움직임 정보 표현)

  • This paper proposes 'Coding Unit Tree' based on quadtree efficiently with motion vector to represent splitting information of a Coding Unit (CU) in HEVC. The new international video coding, High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC), adopts various techniques and new unit concept: CU, Prediction Unit (PU), and Transform Unit (TU). The basic coding unit, CU is larger than macroblock of H.264/AVC and it splits to process image-based quadtree with a hierarchical structure. However, in case that there are complex motions in CU, the more signaling bits with motion information need to be transmitted. This structure provides a flexibility and a base for a optimization, but there are overhead about splitting information. This paper analyzes those signals and proposes a new algorithm which removes those redundancy. The proposed algorithm utilizes a type code, a dominant value, and residue values at a node in quadtree to remove the addition bits. Type code represents a structure of an image tree and the two values represent a node value. The results show that the proposed algorithm gains 13.6% bit-rate reduction over the HM-1.0.
