An efficient numerical procedure for material and geometric nonlinear analysis of reinforced concrete shells under monotonically increasing loads through their elastic, inelastic and ultimate load ranges is developed by using the finite element method. The 8-node Serendipity isoparametric element developed by the degeneration approach including the transverse shear deformation is used. A layered approach is used to represent the steel reinforcement and to discretize the concrete behavior through the thickness. The total Lagrangian formulation based upon the simplified Von Karman strain expressions is used to take into account the geometric nonlinearity of the structure. The material nonlinearities are taken into account by comprising the tension, compression, and shear models of cracked concrete and a model for reinforcement in the concrete; and also a so-called smeared crack model is incorporated. The steel reinforcement is assumed to be in a uniaxial stress state and is modelled as a smeared layer of equivalent thickness. This method will be verified a useful tool to account for geometric and material nonlinearities in detailed analysis of reinforced concrete concrete shells of general form through numerical examples of the sequential paper( ).
ECC is a micro-mechanically designed cementitious composite which exhibits tightly controlled crack width and strain hardening behavior in uniaxial tension while using a moderate amount of reinforcing fiber, typically less than 2% fiber volume fraction. Recently, a variety of applications of this material ranging from repair and retrofit of structures, cast-in-place structures, to precast structural elements requiring high ductility are developed. In the present study, a retrofitting method using ECC reinforced with high strength rebar was proposed to enhance load-carrying capacity and crack control performance of deteriorated reinforced concrete (RC) beams. Six beam specimens were designed and tested under a four-point loading setup. The flexural test revealed that load-carrying capacity and crack control performance were significantly enhanced by the use of ECC and high strength rebar. This result will be useful for practical field applications of the proposed retrofitting method.
In completely weathered granite gneiss,8 of 40cm cast-in-situ concrete piles are constructed, and static pile load tests are executed on the piles to study the bearing behavior of rock-socketed piles. Subsurface explorations are carried out on the test site in three phases, in which 14 borehole investigations as well as the seismic investigation are performed. Rock socketd depths of the piles in the weathered rocks are varied as 3m, 6m and 9m to separate the shaft resistance from the end bearing resistance, and for a couple of piles, styrofoam of 10cm thickness is installed under the pile point to eliminate the effect of the end resistance. Strain gages are instrumented on re-bars to pick-up the transferred loads along the pile length. From the results of the pile load tests, the allowable shaft resistance and the allowable end bearing values of weathered rocks are proposed as $8.6t/m^2\;and\; 84t/m^2$, respectively. The empirical equation relating the elastic modulus of rock mass with the uniaxial compressive strength of the rock specimen is also proposed for the weathered rocks.

It is needed to investigate the material properties of ETFE foil under various temperatures because ETFE membrane foils have very thin depth and relatively high flexibility. In this paper, the material properties of ETFE membrane foil obtained from 3 testes under various temperatures are presented. First, the uniaxial test under four temperatures as -20$^{\circ}C$, 0$^{\circ}C$, +20$^{\circ}C$ and +40$^{\circ}C$ was performed. Each 5 specimen was tested and the yield stress, tensile strength and the Young's modulus of the foils are obtained. Second, the creep testes under three temperatures as 25$^{\circ}C$, 40$^{\circ}C$ and 60$^{\circ}C$, 3MP, 6MP and 9MP tension load was subjected to the specimen and the creep characteristics was investigated. Finally, the tear test under $5^{\circ}C$, $^0{\circ}C$ and $20^{\circ}C$ was performed. It is concluded that the shape of stress-strain curve or general behaviors are similar with that of normal temperatures but the mechanical characteristics of ETFE membrane foils were affected by the temperatures, obviously.
Bio-grouting based on microbial-induced calcite precipitation (MICP) is recently emerging as a novel and environmentally friendly technique for improvement of coarse-grained ground. To date, the mechanical behaviour of bio-grouted coarse-grained soil with different calcite contents and grain sizes still remains poorly understood. The primary objective of this study is to investigate the influence of calcite content on the mechanical properties of bio-grouted coarse-grained soil with different grain sizes. This is achieved through an integrated study of uniaxial loading experiments of bio-grouted coarse-grained soil, 3D digitization of the grains in conjunction with discrete element modelling (DEM). In the DEM model, aggregates were represented by clump logic based on the 3D morphology digitization of the typical coarse-grained aggregates while the CaCO3 was represented by small-sized bonded particle model. The computed stress-strain relations and failure patterns of the bio-grouted coarse-grained soil were validated against the measured results. Both experimental and numerical investigation suggest that aggregate sizes and calcite content significantly influence the mechanical behaviour of bio-cemented aggregates. The strength of the bio-grouted coarse-grained soil increases linearly with calcite content, but decreases non-linearly with the increasing particle size for all calcite contents. The experimental-based DEM approach developed in this study also offers an optional avenue for the exploring of micro-mechanisms contributing to the mechanical response of bio-grouted coarse-grained soils.

In relation to the tissue engineering, the cellular responses to the morphology of the scaffold surface are interesting topics. Human ligament fibroblasts (HLFs) were cultured on the micrpatterned silicone substrates subjected to cyclic stretch to simulate ligament motion. Groove and ridge width of silicone substrates was 10/50, 20/50, 20/10, and 20/20 ${\mu}m$ (groove/ridge ${\mu}m$) with a depth of $3{\mu}m$. Strain was applied over two days for 4 hours per day with a frequency of 0.5 Hz with the magnitudes of 4 or 8%. The purpose of this study was to evaluate ligament fibroblast alignment and cellular responses in relation to the pattern of microgrooved surface and stretching magnitude. Ligament fibroblasts in the microgrooved surface were elongated and aligned parallel to the microgrooves under no stretch. Uniaxial cyclic stretch induced cellular activities and their orientation rise in cellular response and the cells showed alignment and elongation perpendicular to the direction of the stretch. Biochemical analyses showed that the best cellular response was found on the $20/50{\mu}m$ under 8% stretch. The surface morphology and mechanical stretching were found to contribute to increase of proliferation, collagen production.
Acoustic emission is n burst of microseismic waves generated by microscopic failure due to deformation in materials. The study on the detection of initiation and propagation of microcracks from acoustic emission measurement is very important for the evaluation of the stability of underground rock structures by the nondestructive letting method. In this study, acoustic emission was measured under uniaxial stiffness loading test used to obtain the complete stress-strain curves of marble and concrete used as reinforced materials of rock structures. The analysis of acoustic emission parameters and source location were performed to discuss the characteristics of the deformation and failure behavior of rock and concrete. And acoustic emission was measured under cyclic loading test to verify the Kaiser effect associated with the damage of materials, in situ stress of rock, and stress history of concrete structure.

Automotive manufactures have taken more interests in tailored sheet metals for improving the rigidity, weight reduction, crash durability, and cost savings so that their application to auto-bodies has been increased. However, since the tailored sheet metals do not behave like un-welded sheet metals in press forming operations, the stamping engineers no longer rely only on conventional forming techniques. Futhermore, there is no clear understanding of the characteristics of welded metal which influence the overall press formability of tailored sheet metals. Recently, the computer simulations are prevailing for the evaluation of the formability. Unfortunately, the mechanical property of tailored sheet metal has to be quantitatively defined in the simulation. In this study, the analytical equations are formulated in order to find the mechanical properties of the welded metal in the tailored sheet metal welded by co$_2$laser. Based on force distribution assumption, the constitutive behavior of the welded metal is investigated using uniaxial tensile test results of base metals and tailored sheet metal. Then, the strength coefficient, work-hardening exponent, and plastic strain ratio of laser-welded metal are calculate from those of base metals and tailored sheet metal. In addition, the existence of weld defects in the welded metal is indirectly detected by examining the slop of strength coefficient of the welded metal.

The research reported herein is concerned with the model testing of piles socketed in soft rock which was simulated by cement, plaster, sand, water and concrete hardening accelerator. Model tests on a single pile socketed in simulated soft rock under axial cyclic loading were conducted and the bearing capacity and accumulated deformation characteristics under different static, and cyclic loads were studied by using a device which combined oneself-designed test apparatus with a dynamic triaxial system. The accumulated deformation of the pile head, and the axial force, were measured by LVDT and strain gauges, respectively. Test results show that the static load ratio (SLR), cyclic load ratio (CLR), and the number of cycles affect the accumulated deformation, cyclic secant modulus of pile head, and ultimate bearing capacity. The accumulated deformation increases with increasing numbers of cycles, however, its rate of growth decreases and is asymptotic to zero. The cyclic secant modulus of pile head increases and then decreases with the growth in the number of cycles, and finally remains stable after 50 cycles. The ultimate bearing capacity of the pile is increased by about 30% because of the cyclic loading thereon, and the axial force is changed due to the applied cyclic shear stress. According to the test results, the development of accumulated settlement is analysed. Finally, an empirical formula for accumulated settlement, considering the effects of the number of cycles, the static load ratio, the cyclic load ratio and the uniaxial compressive strength, is proposed which can be used for feasibility studies or preliminary design of pile foundations on soft rock subjected to cyclic loading.
In this study the new creep test using miniaturized specimen(10${\times}$10${\times}$0.5 ㎣) was performed to evaluate the creep characteristics for degraded materials of 2.25Cr-1Mo steel. For this creep test, the artificially aged materials for 330 hrs and 1820hrs at $630^{\circ}C$ were used. The test temperatures applied for the creep deformation of miniaturized specimens was X$630^{\circ}C$ and the applied loads were between 45 kg∼80 kg. After creep test, macro- and microscopic observation were conducted by the scanning electron microscope(SEM). The creep curves depended definitely on applied load and microstructure and showed the three stages of creep behavior like uniaxial tensile creep curves. The load exponents of virgin, 330 hrs and 1820 hrs materials based on creep rate showed 14.8, 9.5 and 8.3 at $550^{\circ}C$ respectively, The 1820 hrs material showed the lowest load exponent and this behavior was also observed in the case of load exponent based on creep rupture time. In contrast to virgin material which exhibited fined dimple fractography, a lot of carbides like net structure and voids were observed on the fractography of degraded materials.
