Classification and Intensity Assessment of Korean Emotion Expressing Idioms for Human Emotion Recognition

  • Objective: The aim of the study was to develop a most widely used Korean dictionary of emotion expressing idioms. This is anticipated to assist the development of software technology that recognizes and responds to verbally expressed human emotions. Method: Through rigorous and strategic classification processes, idiomatic expressions included in this dictionary have been rated in terms of nine different emotions (i.e., happiness, sadness, fear, anger, surprise, disgust, interest, boredom, and pain) for meaning and intensity associated with each expression. Result: The Korean dictionary of emotion expression idioms included 427 expressions, with approximately two thirds classified as 'happiness'(n=96), 'sadness'(n=96), and 'anger'(n=90) emotions. Conclusion: The significance of this study primarily rests in the development of a practical language tool that contains Korean idiomatic expressions of emotions, provision of information on meaning and strength, and identification of idioms connoting two or more emotions. Application: Study findings can be utilized in emotion recognition research, particularly in identifying primary and secondary emotions as well as understanding intensity associated with various idioms used in emotion expressions. In clinical settings, information provided from this research may also enhance helping professionals' competence in verbally communicating patients' emotional needs.

Social Cues, E-Social Ambience, and Emotions in Web-Based Fashion Retailing: A Case of U.S. Shoppers

  • In-store atmospherics involve quantified physical and social aspects; however, the social quality of a web-based retailing context has largely been under-examined. This study addressed some antecedents and consequences of social ambience in virtual shopping (or e-social ambience) within a web-based U.S. retailing fashion context. This study explored the role of social cues as a viable antecedent to e-social ambience and emotions as its consequence. A conceptual framework was built postulating the effect of social cue for web content, on e-social ambience, emotions, and e-shopping enjoyment. The experimental results (n=488) on a fictitious retail T-shirt website confirmed the positive correlation among the variables; in addition, the level of social cues included within the web content significantly increased the level of customer-perceived e-social ambience of the website and subsequent positive on-site emotions. On-site emotions positively influence purchase intentions. The results expand the current understanding of e-store management by providing novel insight relevant to fashion companies that wish to provide customers with a quality website shopping experience.

An NLP-based Mixed-method Approach to Explore the Impact of Gratifications and Emotions on the Acceptance of Amazon Go

  • Amazon Go is a cashierless convenience store concept, which is seen as a disruption in the grocery retail segment. Although Amazon Go has the ability to disrupt the retail segment, there are speculations on how Amazon Go will be perceived by users. Existing studies have not utilized user-generated content to understand the factors that affect customer behaviour in case of Amazon Go. Additionally, in case of phygital retail, studies have not attempted at understanding the effect of emotions and gratifications on user behaviour. To address the gap of exploring user perspectives based on their experience, we have examined the impact of gratifications and emotions on the acceptance of phygital retail using user-generated-content. A mixed-method approach has been utilized using only user-generated content. Utilizing topic-modelling based content analysis and emotion analysis on 30 articles related to Amazon Go, we found themes like, convenience, technology, experience, personalization, enjoyment and emotions like, bad, good, annoyance, success. In the empirical analysis, we have utilized 522 reviews about Amazon Go from the cognition and emotion theory stance, and found that hedonic gratifications have a positive impact on challenge emotions. We also found a significant impact of emotions on customer's favourite behaviour.

조선시대 아동용 교재들 속에 나타난 정서지능 (Emotional Intelligence in Children's Textbooks of the Chosun Dynasty)

  • Seven textbooks for children used in homes and schools (sudangs) of the Chosun dynasty were examined to investigate how they taught emotional intelligence in traditional Korean society. The contents of the books were analyzed according to the 4 abilities of emotional intelligence described by Salovey and Mayer (1966): (1) perception, appraisal, and expression of emotion, (2) emotion's facilitation of thinking, (3) understanding and analyzing emotions, and (4) regulation of emotion to promote emotional and intellectual growth. The analysis showed that most of the books valued emotional intelligence and taught children how they perceive, appraise, and express emotions. The emotional ability to facilitate thinking was also emphasized, whereas the ability to understand and analyze emotions was seldom mentioned. It was also found that the regulation of emotion was emphasized; that is, children were educated to control and depress their emotions rather than to express them naturally.

시각적 연속성을 통한 가로공간에서의 감성 연구 - 전통가로와 근대가로의 비교를 중심으로 - (A Study on Emotions in the Street Space through Visual Sequence - Focusing on Comparision of Traditional Streets and Modern Streets -)

  • Body movements of humans have emotions and these movements have meanings of 'Living Spirits' and 'Emotions'. Also emotions of humans indicate all body movements which are made within the environment. This study aims at providing new potentials to emotional design research methods not only by understanding the characteristics of visual perception according to body movements and but by investigating correlations between sequence which arise by the visual perception and emotions through experiments. As for the scope and method of this study, the emotional space designs were analyzed through the emotional theory study, SD method was used to evaluate emotions and the movements in the modern village and traditional village with similar elements were compared and analyzed for the empirical study. As a result, first it was confirmed waling hours in the traditional village took more than the modern village and it is thought movements of humans are affected by the visual environments. Second, it was confirmed values of the emotional evaluation were higher in the traditional village than the modern village. Third, according to a result of the correlation analysis between space sequence and emotions, it was closed with negative emotions such as 'Closed', and 'Complicated' from positive emotional words such as 'Natural'. 'Open', 'Curious', etc. as spaces are experienced more through movements in the modern village. On the contrary, the emotional intensity of the positive words such as 'In Harmony', 'Beautiful' and 'Warn' through movements in the traditional village increased as spaces were experienced more. As a result of this study, it was confirmed the time, space and emotions have correlations each other.

직장에서 경험한 강한 감정의 전이(spillover)와 교차전이(crossover): 시카고 지역 맞벌이 부부를 중심으로 (Crossover and Spillover of Emotions from Work to Family among Working Couples in their Daily Lives)

  • 본 연구는 맞벌이 부부들의 일과 가족생활의 상호작용을 이해하는데 중요한 개념인 전이(spillover)와 교차전이(crossover)에 초점을 맞추어 직장에서 경험한 감정과 퇴근 후 가정에서의 감정 간의 관계의 분석을 통해 이들의 경험을 이해하고자 하였다. 시카고 대학의 Sloan Working Families Study의 연구대상자들을 자료로 경험표집법(Experience Sampling Method)으로 이들의 일상을 탐구하였고 t-검증으로 분석하였다. 분석결과, 긍정적인 감정의 전이는 남녀 모두에게서 발견하였고, 아내의 부정적인 경험이 남편으로 전이하였다. 본 연구에서 발견된 긍정적인 감정의 전이현상은 사회사업 실천가나 연구자가 맞벌이 부부를 연구할 때 일과 가정생활 간의 전이, 교차전이 현상을 일상의 세부적인 요인들을 고려하여 심도있게 관찰, 연구해야 할 필요성이 있음을 시사한다.

  • Expressive face and human body gestures are among the main non-verbal communication channels in human-human interaction. Understanding human emotions through body gesture is one of the necessary skills both for humans and also for the computers to interact with their human counterparts. Gesture analysis is consisted of several processes such as detecting of hand, extracting feature, and recognizing emotions. Skin color information for tracking hand gesture is obtained from face detection region. We have revealed relationships between paricular body movements and specific emotions by using HMM(Hidden Markov Model) classifier. Performance evaluation of emotional human body recognition has experimented.

  • 최근 코로나19로 인한 비대면 서비스의 확산으로 온라인을 통한 소통이 증가하고 있다. 비대면 상황에서는 텍스트나 음성, 이미지 등의 모달리티를 통해 상대방의 의견이나 감정을 인식하고 있다. 현재 다양한 모달리티를 결합한 멀티모달 감정인식에 관한 연구가 활발하게 진행되고 있다. 그중 음성 데이터를 활용한 감정인식은 음향 및 언어정보를 통해 감정을 이해하는 수단으로 주목하고 있으나 대부분 단일한 음성 특징값으로 감정을 인식하고 있다. 하지만 대화문에는 다양한 감정이 복합적으로 존재하기 때문에 다중 감정을 인식하는 방법이 필요하다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 복합적으로 존재하는 내재된 감정인식을 위해 음성 데이터를 전처리한 후 특징 벡터를 추출하고 시간의 흐름을 고려한 다중 감정 회귀 모델을 제안한다.

Negative Emotions and Coping Behaviors of Passenger in the Airline Industry, Vietnam

  • In Vietnam, the airline service sector plays an important economic role. However, it is a complicated industry that is open to failures. Negative emotions are an essential variable for the airline service industry because they can trigger a variety of coping behaviors that affect consumer loyalty as well as the image and reputation of the airline service providers. However, negative emotions and the accompanying coping behaviors are often investigated partially or as separate issues, thus leading to an incomplete understanding. This study is conducted to fill this gap by proposing and testing the causal relationship between negative emotions (anger, frustration, regret) and coping behaviors (complaint, negative word-of-mouth (WOM), and switching intention) in the context of the airline industry. Eight research hypotheses are tested. Using the partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) on a sample of 587 passengers in Vietnam, the empirical results show that anger and frustration influence complaints, negative WOM, and switching intention, while regret leads to switching intention and negative WOM. Thus, the research has important academic and practical implications. The empirical outcome could be of major importance for airline companies in planning to provide new services and achieve high performance in the long run.

영화 대본에서 감정 및 정서 분석: 사례 연구 (Emotion and Sentiment Analysis from a Film Script: A Case Study)

  • 감정은 서사 생성과 이해 모두에서 중요한 역할을 한다. 본 논문은 플루칙의 감정 모델을 기반으로 영화 대본에서 8가지 감정 표현을 분석하였다. 먼저 각 장면별 수동으로 감정을 태깅하였고, 이 때 8가지 감정 중 분노, 공포, 그리고 놀람이 가장 우세하게 나타났는데, 이는 스릴러 영화 장르를 고려할 때 의미있다고 할 수 있다. 또한, 스토리에서 긴장이 가장 고조되는 클라이맥스에서 다양한 감정이 복합적으로 나타난다고 가정하였고, 대본 상에서 3 부분의 클라이맥스를 확인할 수 있었다. 그 다음으로 파이썬 (Python) 프로그래밍 언어 기반 자연어처리 도구인 NLTK (Natural Language ToolKit)의 감성 분석 도구를 이용하여 수동 감정 태깅과 비교한 결과, 분노와 공포 감정에서 높은 일치율을, 그리고 놀람, 기대, 혐오 감정에서는 낮은 일치율을 보임을 확인하였다.
