  • This study was performed investigate eating behaviors and their association with obesity in Korean elderly people. A total of 9,408 (male 4,487, female 4,921) Korean adults aged 40 to 69 years were interviewed and examined from May 2001 to Feb 2002. The subjects were classified into 4 weight status groups based on body mass index (BMI, $kg/m^2$): under weight, BMI<18.5; normal, $18.5{\leq}BMI\leq24.9$; overweight, $25.0{\leq}BMI\leq29.9$; obesity, $BMI\geq30.0$. Anthropocentric parameters, eating behavior, and preference of cooking method and taste were examined. In male, distribution of weight status by BMI was under weight 2.4%, normal 58.1%, over weight 36.7%, obesity 2.8%. As the BMI increased, the rate of skipping meal, snacks, and eating out were increased and the rate of eat alone was decreased. When compared according to the weight status by BMI, the frequency of the steamed, roasted, fried, seasoned, and soup intake rates were increases in the cooking methods and preference of greasy taste was increased by degree of obesity. In female, distribution of weight status by BMI was under weight 1.4%, normal 52.8%, over weight 38.6%, obesity 7.2%. There were differences in the rate of eating out, snacks, the frequency of fried food intake rates, and preferences of salty, hot, greasy taste according to the weight groups by BMI. In this results, we suggests that keep regular meal and keep away from the high-fat, salty, stimulative foods for prevent and administer the obesity in Korean adults meal and female.

  • The combined estimator of inter- and intra-block estimators in incomplete block designs can be expressed as a weighted average of two location estimators. The weight should be between 0 and 1. However, the negative variance component estimate could result in the weight being negative or larger than 1. In this paper, we show that if two location estimators have symmetric unimodal distributions, truncating the weight to 0 or 1 accordingly improves the combined estimator under an arbitrary convex loss function.

  • To know the effects of weeding periods (weeding from 12 days, 28 days and 42 days after seeding to harvest, and weeding from seeding to 14 days, 28 days and 42 days after seeding) and growing conditions such as transparent polyethylene film mulch (P.E. mulch) and bare soil on growth and yield of peanuts, "Yeongho-Tangkong" was planted on May 10, 1984. Under P.E. mulch, the number of weeds was higher, but the weed dry weight was lower than in bare soil by the middle of July. Sixty days after seedings, the length of main stems in weedy check plots was longer, but shoot dry weight was lower compared to weed free plot. In the correlation coefficients between weed dry weight and the shoot dry weight of peanut on July 14, the growth retardation of peanuts due to weeds was showed earlier under P.E. mulch than in bare soil. Shoot dry weight, shelling ratio, number of seeds per pod, 100 pod weight, and seed yield were higher under P.E, mulch compared to bare soil. But weed dry weight, length of branches, number of pod bearing branches, number of pods per square meters, and pod yield were similar between P.E. mulch and bare soil. Shoot dry weight of peanuts, length of branches, number of pod bearing branches, number of pods per square meters, pod yield, 100 pod weight, 100 seed weight, and seed yield in weed free plots from 28 days after seeding to harvest (28 DAS-Harvest) were higher compared to weed free plots from 42 DAS-Harvest. However, in the weed free plot from seeding to 42 days after seeding seed yield was lower than that of the continuous weeding plot due to lower number of pod bearing branches and number of pods per square meters. When weed was not controlled at the later growth stages of peanuts, reduction in seed yield due to weeds was greater in bare soil than that under P.E. mulch.

  • In order to know the optimum planting density under shading structures at different light intensity, We investigated the growth status, distribution of ginseng leaf area, correlation between planting density and root weight per plant and yield, correlation between leaf area index and root weight per plant and yield. According to the increase of planting density the leaf area per plant was decreased, but leaf area index (L.A.I) was increased. Ginseng leaf population at different lines under common straw shading were distributed mainly in frost lines but polyethylene net shading at 10fo light intensity were distributed equally in all lines. Optimum planting density in common straw shading at 5% light intensity was 55 plant per tan (90 cmX180 cm) and polyethylene net shading 81 10% light intensity was 60 plant per tan, in consideration of root weight and yield. Optimum leaf area index was 2.4 under common straw shading at 5% light intensity but was 2.7 under polyethylene net shading at 10% light intensity.

  • Soybeans [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] are frequently exposed to unfavorable environments during growing seasons and water is the most important factor limiting for the production system. The purpose of this study was to determine the leaf water potential changes by irrigation, and to evaluate the relationships of leaf water potential, growth and yield in soybeans. Three soybean cultivars, Hwangkeumkong, Shinpaldalkong 2, and Pungsannamulkong, were planted in growth chamber and field with irrigated treatments. Leaf water potential of three soybean cultivars was positively correlated with leaf water content during vegetative and reproductive growth stages in growth chamber and field experiments. Leaf water potentials measured for three soybean cultivars under growth chamber were higher than those of under field conditions. Higher leaf water potential with irrigated plots under field was observed compared to conventional plots during reproductive growth stages. Leaf water potentials of three soybean cultivars were continually decreased during reproductive growth stages under field and there was no significant difference among them. Number of leaves, leaf water content, pod dry weight, number of seeds and seed dry weight with irrigated plots were higher than those of conventional plots. The results of this study suggested that leaf water potential could be used as an important growth indicator during the growing season of soybean plants.

  • Fibrous cellulose triacetate prepared from purified cotton under various temperatures was dissolved in the solution of 70%, monochloroacetic acid and it was fractionated using water as a precipitant. Eight fractions were obtained through the stepwise precipitation. Degree of polymerization and molecular weight of each fraction were measured viscometrically. Integral and differential molecular weight distribution curve were drawn for each sample prepared under various temperatures and were carefully observed. On this experimental study, following conclusions were obtained: Fractional precipitation can be carried out for fibrous cellulose triacetate in the solution of 70% monochloroacetic acid using water as a precipitant. The differences on the shapes of molecular weight distribution curve were occured on account of the various acetylation temperatures. At the relatively higher acetylation temperatures, the cellulose was randomly degraded and the portion of low degree of polymerization was increased. Commercial acetate, therefore, may not be prepared at above 40$^{\circ}C$ according to the molecular weight distribution curve regardless of higher viscosity and average degree of polymerization. It was concluded that the optimum acetylation temperature for commercial acetate was approximately 30$^{\circ}C$.

  • Multiple linear regression analysis was conducted to interpretate the relationship between sesame grain yield and its components under early sowing cropping condition. The t test showed that stem length, number of capsules per plant, 1000 seeds weight and seed weight per plant gave significant contribution to sesame grain yield, therefore those variables were assumed to mostly influenced components to grain yield of sesame. In the stepwise regression analysis, the predicted equation for sesame grain yield per square meter (Y) was Y = -7.900 + 0.150X1 + 0.461X5 + 15.553X6 + 8.543X7. Meanwhile, F value showed that stem length, number of capsules per plant and seed weight per plant gave significant contribution to sesame grain yield, while 1000 seeds weight did not significantly show. Based on the results, it is reasonable to assume that high yield. potential of sesame under early sowing cropping condition would be obtained by selecting breeding lines with long stem length, number of capsules per plant, and seed weight per plant, which was different result at the late sowing cropping condition in which days to flowering and maturity were assumed to be more affected factors to the sesame grain yield.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the eating patterns, nutrient intakes, blood levels, and health status of male college students in Seoul according to body mass index (BMI). In this study, we classified subjects into normal weight (n=240), under weight (n=11), and obese (n=46) groups according to BMI. The weight and BMI were significantly higher in the obese group compared to other groups (p<0.0001). The obesity was associated with overeating and frequent eating. The under weight group showed significantly higher consumption of fast food, snacks, and fried foods compared to the other groups (p<0.05). The intakes of milk, meat, fish, eggs, and fried food and preference ratios were higher in the obese group (p<0.05). The male college students in this study showed insufficient intakes of calories, vitamin C, folic acid, and calcium. The plasma LDL-cholesterol levels in the obese group were higher compared to the other groups. In conclusion, intake of nutrients among male college students is found to be insufficient and requires nutritional education. The under weight group showed regular eating habits and increased nutrient intake. The obese group was shown to need more exercise with higher intakes of vegetables and fruits.

  • Objectives: This study was performed to investigate the effect of active nutrition care on feeding and nutritional status of elderly patients receiving long-term enteral tube feeding. Methods: Subjects included 77 elderly patients who had received enteral nutrition more than one week before admission. Nutrition care was provided to patients supplied less calories than required. Feeding intolerance was examined and managed every day and formula was adjusted to meet nutritional requirement during the first 3 months after admission. Patients were classified into under or over 80% of percent ideal body weight (PIBW) and medical records were used to compare changes in weight,, biochemical indices, and nutritional status during the study. Results: Weight, BMI, triglyceride and total cholesterol in blood, hemoglobin, and hematocrit levels were significantly lower in patients under 80% of the PIBW than in those over 80% of the PIBW at admission. The percentage of supply to required calories was also lower in patients under 80% of the PIBW. After 1 month of nutritional care, supplied volume of formula was significantly increased in patients under 80% of the PIBW. Weight, BMI, and PIBW were increased and there were no differences between groups after 6 months. In addition, the concentrations of triglyceride and total cholesterol in blood, hemoglobin, and hematocrit tended to increase in patients under 80% of the PIBW, leading to no difference between groups after 3 months. Conclusions: Personalized active nutrition care is effective to increase weight and improve feeding and nutritional status in underweight elderly patients receiving long-term enteral nutrition.

  • Screening data from preplacement and periodic examination in Gu Mi Industrial Estate from May, 1983 to June, 1983 provide an opportunity to evaluate the accuracy of self-reported height and weight. The data for men and women were analyzed separated for effects of age, marrital status, educational level, employment status, measured height, measured weight and relative weight (percent of ideal body weight). The mean percent discrepancy from self-reported and measured height was analysed by cross-tubulation, P. value for analysis of variance and multiple correlation analysis in men and women. It is clear from the data that self-reported height and weigt differ from the quantities in systemic ways. But the magnitude of misreporting is very small on average except for weight in women. Whereas height tend to be over-reported, weight is under-reported in women but over-reported in men. Weight was accuracte for age group 20-29 years in men and age group over 40 year in women and over-reporting of weight increased with age in men and under-reporting of weight decreased with age in women. Weight was accurate in 60-64kg group in men and under 50kg group in women and under-stating of weight increased with weight in men and women. Weight was the most accurate in 100-109 percent relative weight group in men and in 90-99 percent relative weight group in women and under-stating of weight increased with relative weight and over-stating decreased with relative weight and over-stating decreased with relative weight in men and women. Height was the most accurate for group of primary school and except group of primary school, accuracy of height increased with educational level in men and women. In height, the highest measured height groups (over than 175cm measured height in men and over than 165cm measured height in women) were the most accurate and of over-reporting of height decreased with measured height. Single variable regression analysis and ANOVAs showed age(P<0.003), measured weight(P<0.0001) relative weight(P<0.0001), educational level(P<0.0005) and employment status(P<0.0007) to be significantly related to ${\Delta}WT$ in women and measured height(P<0.0001), educational level(P<0.03) and marrital status (P<0.03) to be significantly related to ${\Delta}WT$ in men. The women were more sensitive about her body weight than height.
