  • The purpose of this study was to suggest a systematic and scientific method for measurement of children's growth development, in which the accuracy of existing diagnosis method has not been concretely examined yet. The most popular method for diagnosis of children's growth is to analyze the opening degree of growth plate in each joint by X-ray image. However, X-ray method has some disadvantages; it is impossible to measure the diagnosis of growth periodically and repeatedly due to the radiation problem. Hence, this study introduced a profile analysis and the algorithm of analyzing the image of growth plate with the BUA(Broadband Ultrasound Attenuation) of calcaneus, to verify the possibility of alternative ultrasonic method harmless to human body. We obtained the images of growth plate in proximal tibiae, phalanges, and calcanei of 269 children (7∼16 years old) with X-ray. And the image of growth plate in calcanei was also obtained front those children with ultrasound. The results showed that the time of the opening degree of growth plate in each joint was almost consistent between X-ray and ultrasonic images. Also, the images of growth plate measured by X-ray and ultrasound showed the high correlation. Therefore, it is expected that the algorithm of ultrasonic profile analysis introduced in this study can replace the existing X-ray method to measure the growth plate correctly.

  • The frequency dependency of the Rayleigh surface wave was investigated indirectly by measuring the angular dependency of the backward radiation of the incident ultrasonic wave in the abrasion specimens, which was explained in view of the residual stress distribution. The peak intensity of the backward radiation profile decreased and the right half width of the profile increased with an increase of the variational rate of residual stress for the scuffing specimen. The peak intensity was also affected by the surface wave scattering during the propagation around the micro-damages. The peak angle might depend on not only the amount of residual stress but also the micro-structure. The result observed in this study demonstrates the high potential of the backward radiated ultrasound as a tool for the nondestructive evaluation of the subsurface gradients of materials.

  • The renewed interest in the use of hyperthermia in cancer therapy is bases on radiobiological and clinical evidence indicated that there may be a significant therapeutic advantage with the use of heat alone or combined with radiation or chemotherapy, There are many methods for generating heat for localized tumor as like radiofrequency, microwave, electromagnetic induction and ultrasound. But it is very difficult to be even thermal dose distribution and stable output of power and then the detection of temperature in tumor is difficult to be precise with thermocouples and semiconductor sensors. We designed the microwave heating generator, dipole antenna applicators and autometic temperature controlled thermocouples for localized hyperthermia on skin and in cavities. 1. The microwave generator with 120 W, 2,450MHz magnetron could be heating up to $40^{\circ}C\~50^{\circ}C\;for\;1\~2$ hours in living tissues. 2. The thermal dose distribution in tissue with microwave was described $42^{\circ}C\~44^{\circ}C$ with in 3 cm depth and $2\~6cm$ diameter area. 3. Skin surface heating applicator with spiral 3 times wave length antenna radiated high Power of microwave. 4, Intracavitary heating applicator with dipole antenna with autometic control temperature sensor kept up continuously constant temperature in tissue. 5. For constant thermal distribution, applied two steps power with 10W microwave after $17\~20W$ during first 10 minutes. 6. The cooling rate by blood flew in living tissue was rised as $10\%$ then meats.

  • The guided wave has been widely employed to characterize thin plates and layered media. The dispersion curves of phase and group velocities are essential for the quantitative application of guided waves. In the present work, a fully automated system for the measurement of backward radiation of LLW has been developed. The specimen moves in two dimensional plane as well as in angular rotation. The signals of backward radiation of LLW were measured from an elastic plate in which specific modes of Lamb wave were strongly generated. Phase velocity of the corresponding modes was determined from the incident angle. The generated Lamb waves propagated forward and backward with the leakage of energy into water. Backward radiated LLW was detected by the same transducer and its frequency components were analyzed to extract the related information to the dispersion curves. The dispersion curves of phase velocity were measured by varying the incident angle. Moving the specimen in the linear direction of LLW propagation, group velocity was determined by measuring the transit time shift in the ultrasonic waveform.

  • For the purpose of possibility study on development of an acoustic tweezer using standing waves and very high frequency ultrasound focused beams, a system which can manipulate the position of particles in water has been constructed. It can move the particles to near focal point of a focused beam by the radiation force of standing waves, and then the particles would be trapped by the radiating force of the focused beam. The results show that micro sphere particles were trapped well at nodes of the standing waves and their position can be easily manipulated by frequency control. And, even though the radiation force by single focused beam pushes a particle away from the transducer, two focused confronted beams can trap it at near center.

  • Diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG) is a deadly paediatric brain cancer. Transient response to radiation, ineffective chemotherapeutic agents and aggressive biology result in rapid progression of symptoms and a dismal prognosis. Increased availability of tumour tissue has enabled the identification of histone gene aberrations, genetic driver mutations and methylation changes, which have resulted in molecular and phenotypic subgrouping. However, many of the underlying mechanisms of DIPG oncogenesis remain unexplained. It is hoped that more representative in vitro and preclinical models-using both xenografted material and genetically engineered mice-will enable the development of novel chemotherapeutic agents and strategies for targeted drug delivery. This review provides a clinical overview of DIPG, the barriers to progress in developing effective treatment, updates on drug development and preclinical models, and an introduction to new technologies aimed at enhancing drug delivery.

  • Spilling of petroleum hydrocarbons such as gasoline, motor oils, and diesel fuel from underground storage tanks (USTs) is a major source of contamination to ground water and soils. In response to the need of developing an effective and economical cleanup technique, this study investigates the effectiveness of using sonication to enhance the soil flushing method. The study involves laboratory testing, and the testing was conducted using a specially designed and fabricated device to determine the effect of sonication on contaminant removal. The sonication was applied at 20 kHz frequency under different power levels. Test soil was Joomoonjin Sand, and diesel fuel was used as a contaminant of soil flushing test. The results of the investigation show that sonication enhanced the contaminant removal from soils significantly, and the degree of enhancement varied with power levels of sonication. Based on the results of the study, it is concluded that the flushing method with sonication has a great potential to become an effective method for removing petroleum hydrocarbons from the contaminated ground.

  • Ultrasonography is one of the most common diagnostic tools in medical imaging with non-invasive and non-radiation loaded characteristics. In the field of dentistry, especially for periodontology, high frequency ultrasonic device can be used for several purposes such as evaluating gingival thickness, identifying the level of alveolar bone, measuring the volume of mucosa of donor site for soft tissue graft and so on. According to recent studies, it was demonstrated that ultrasonic diagnosis had both accuracy and repeatability comparable to conventional diagnostic tools. However, improvement and development of intra-oral probe suitable for adpatation to gingiva and palatal mucosa, are considered as prerequisites for diffusion of ultrasonic diagnosis in periodontology.

  • Epoxy coating and sealing used in nuclear plants for the protection of radiation degrades with aging and hazardous atmosphere. In order to evaluate the degradation of the epoxy, dependence of the acoustic impedance on the change of mechanical properties has been used. Unlike metals, the surface of the epoxy coating on a concrete liner is so wavy that the acoustic impedance is difficult to measure by using the reflectivity of the ultrasound on the interface surface because of the irregular reflection and propagation from the epoxy surface. SA(simulated annealing) algorithm is applied to calculate the acoustic impedance using a reflection wave from the rough epoxy surface. The surface waviness and acoustic impedance are taken into account and determined by SA method to evaluate the state of degradation quantitatively.
