An ultrasonic motor is a motor which uses vibration -a type of elastic vibration- to obtain a driving force, which then drives the motor using friction. In this paper, mode conversion type - single resonance mode ultrasonic rotary motor that use langevin type ultrasonic vibrator was studied. This model was proposed for the first time by Japanese Kumada in 1985. In this study, finite element analysis (FEA) of a stator and bidirectional driving characteristic of a rotor was newly obtained. The amplitude and phase of displacement and elliptical trajectory of beam was confirmed by FEA The fabricated motor was operated to clockwise and counterclockwise in 40.8 [kHz] and 44.2 [kHz] respectively. But bidirectional driving characteristics did not coincide each other.
In this study, focusing of ultrasonic Lamb wave by negative refraction with mode conversion from antisymmetric to symmetric mode was investigated. When a wave propagates backward by negative refraction, the energy flux is antiparallel to the phase velocity. Backward propagation of Lamb wave is quite well known, but the behavior of backward Lamb wave at an interface has rarely been investigated. A pin-type transducer is used to detect Lamb wave propagating on a steel plate with a step change in thickness. Conversion from forward to backward propagating mode leads to negative refraction and thus wave focusing. By comparing the amplitudes of received Lamb waves at a specific frequency measured at different distance between transmitter and interface, the focusing of Lamb wave due to negative refraction was confirmed.
In this study, ultrasonic rotary motors using a bolted langevin type ultrasonic vibrator were designed and fabricated. The stator vibrator has a longitudinal transducer section composed of two metal blocks and two piezoelectric ceramic elements (thickness-polarized) and a mode conversion metal block section called a torsion coupler. And, three kinds of motors were studied by finite element analysis and experiments. So, as material of torsion coupler which generate mode conversion of vibration copper, brass, and phosphor bronze were used. As a result, speed and torque were changed in proportion to the electrical input Voltage, but it was saturated in high voltage. And bad efficiency which was different from a expectation was measured in this motors. So, various problems should be improved for practical use. Finally, The motor which has 1 [cm] diameter was fabricated to present a possibility of miniaturization of this type motors.
Mode conversion type ultrasonic rotary motor using bolt tightened Langevin type vibrator was studied. Driving frequency of the motor, displacements and elliptical trajectories at tip of the coupler were simulated by finite element analysis program (ANSYS). Speed and torque of the fabricated motor were measured as functions of input voltage and load. As results, from FEA the driving frequency of 40.8[kHz] and useful elliptical trajectories were found. Fabricated motor rotated clockwise at frequency of 38.2[kHz]. Speed and torque of the motor were increased when the input voltage was increased. Maximum speed, torque and efficiency were 75[rpm], 0.14[Nm] and 6.28[%], respectively.
The time-reversal method is employed to improve the ability of pipeline defect detection, and a new approach of identifying the pipeline defect depth is proposed in this research. When the L(0,2) mode ultrasonic guided wave excited through a lead zirconate titinate (PZT) transduce array propagates along the pipeline with a defect, it will interact with the defect and be partially converted to flexural F(n, m) modes and longitudinal L(0,1) mode. Using a receiving PZT array attached axisymmetrically around the pipeline, the L(0,2) reflection signal as well as the mode conversion signals at the defect are obtained. An appropriate rectangle window is used to intercept the L(0,2) reflection signal and the mode conversion signals from the obtained direct detection signals. The intercepted signals are time reversed and re-excited in the pipeline again, result in the guided wave energy focusing on the pipeline defect, the L(0,2) reflection and the L(0,1) mode conversion signals being enhanced to a higher level, especially for the small defect in the early crack stage. Besides the L(0,2) reflection signal, the L(0,1) mode conversion signal also contains useful pipeline defect information. It is possible to identify the pipeline defect depth by monitoring the variation trend of L(0,2) and L(0,1) reflection coefficients. The finite element method (FEM) simulation and experiment results are given in the paper, the enhancement of pipeline defect reflection signals by time-reversal method is obvious, and the way to identify pipeline defect depth is demonstrated to be effective.
Poisson's ratio is one of elastic constants of elastic solids. However, it has not attracted attention due to its narrow range and difficult measurement. Transverse wave velocity as well as longitudinal wave velocity should be measured for nondestructive measurement of Poisson's ratio. Hard couplant for transverse wave prevents transducer from scanning over specimen. In the present work, a novel measurement of Poisson's ratio distribution was proposed. Immersion method was employed for the scanning over the specimen. Echo signals of normal beam longitudinal wave were collected. Transverse wave modes generated by mode conversion were identified. From transit time of longitudinal and transverse waves, Poisson's ratio can be determined without information of specimen thickness. This technique was demonstrated for aluminum and steel specimens.
Ultrasonic wave generation and propagation were modeled to simulate an ultrasonic test. A ray model was used for the modeling. Actual sound pressure distribution of the incident wave from an angle probe was analyzed using an ultrasonic visualization method to incorporate the actual sound pressure distribution in the model. In this method, the sound pressure was expressed by the density of rays and the reflection coefficient of ultrasonic beams. Reflection and mode conversion of rays were computed by the Snells law. Simulation programs for the problem of ultrasonic testing of a butt joint are built using this ray modeling. Simulation results for ultrasonic wave scattering from a defect and A-scan display in ultrasonic testing agreed with the actual experiment results.

In this paper, a three-dimensional finite element method and construction of equivalent-circuit for a linear ultrasonic motor are presented. The validity of three-dimensional finite element routine in this paper is experimentally confirmed by analyzing impedance of a piezoelectric transducer. Using this confirmed finite element routine, impedance and vibration mode of a linear ultrasonic motor are calculated. Elliptical motion of contact point between vibrator and rail of the linear ultrasonic motor is shown for determination of contact points. By using the finite element method and analytic equations, characteristics of the linear ultrasonic motor, such as thrust force, speed, losses, powers and efficiency, are calculated. The results are confirmed by experiment. Finally, equivalent circuit parameters of the linear ultrasonic motor are obtained using the three-dimensional finite element method and analytic equations.
