Colorization of C-Scan Ultrasonic Image and Automatic Evaluation Algorithm of Welding Quality (C-Scan 초음파 영상 컬러화 및 용접 품질 자동 평가 시스템)

  • The NDT using ultrasonic is largely divided into A-Scan and C-Scan methods. Since A-Scan method is subject to subjective judgement by trained personnel, C-Scan method has been introduced, which presents the weld area in two dimensions by placing the transducers two dimensionally used in the A-Scan method. Therefore, it is necessary to develop equipment that can provide weld quality without the help of a welding expert and the presentation of effective C-Scan images. Thus, in this paper, the algorithms that express a low resolution 2-dimensional gray image formed by C-Scan method as a high-resolution color C-Scan image and automatically determine the weld quality from the generated C-Scan color image. The high resolution color C-Scan images proposed in this paper allow the exact shape of the weld point to be expressed, and an objective algorithm to use this image to automatically determine weld quality.

  • A-Scan NDT equipment is widely used in the industrial field because it is inexpensive and easy to carry but it is necessary to have a skilled inspection specialist who is trained to analyze the waveform of ultrasonic signal. Since the welding quality is judged subjectively by the specialist, there is a problem in the reliability of the quality. In the C-Scan NDT which overcomes the shortcomings of the A-Scan, welding part can be represented in the form of two dimensional image by combining one dimensional ultrasonic waveform so that the quality of welding can be grasped without the help of specialist. In order to develop C-Scan NDT, it is necessary to develop an array type two dimensional transducer and an algorithm to composing image by combining ultrasonic signals generated from a two dimensional transducer. In addition, the noise component must be minimized in the ultrasonic signal in order to display the quality of welding in the form of images. Therefore we propose a method to remove noise component from the ultrasonic wave and construct a two dimensional ultrasonic image.

Medical Application of the Nondestructive Ultrasonic Tests: Diagnosis of Micro Bone Fractures using Ultrasonic C Scan Images (비파괴 초음파 검사법의 의학적 활용: 초음파 C 스캔 영상을 이용한 미세 골절의 진단)

  • Ultrasonic tests employing non-ionizing radiation are preferred in nondestructive examinations since they are safe and simple in use. The same principles of the techniques have been taken as valuable tools in medical area for the diagnoses of diseases, in other words, defects of the human body. The paper overviews the principles of the medical diagnosis based on nondestructive ultrasonic tests, and then evaluates experimentally the clinical potential of C scan images not popular in medicine, for detecting the micro fractures of the cortical bone. In the experiment the micro bone fractures were created on the femurs of porks by loading three point bending forces (2-4kN) with the speed of 1 mm/min. As the extent of the fracture was altered, not only X ray images but also ultrasonic C scan images using a focused ultrasonic probe resonated at 25 MHz were obtained. The results showed that ultrasonic C scan images were capable of detecting the micro bone fractures which were not possible to identify by conventional X ray images.

  • Digital signal processor (DSP) is used to obtain the peak value and the time difference of ultrasonic signals, to make digital filter, and to derive mathematical transformation from analog circuit. In this study, C-scan system and control program have been developed to high speed data acquisition. This system consists of signal processing parts (DSP, oscilloscope, pulser/receiver, digitizer), scanner, and control program.   • This study is aimed for the implementation of ultrasonic method to assess the reliability of turbine bearings. A modified ultrasonic immersion technique was carried out in both laboratory experiment and field application. From the laboratory results, we confirmed that the condition of interface layer between the babbitt and base metal be monitored by the C-Scan. The C-scan image by the ultrasonic immersion test can be used successfully to observe the condition of interface layer. The testing with a focused transducer provides a promising approach for estimating the extent of the damaged region and observing the interface layer effectively. The difference of the ultrasonic reflection ratio between the bonding and debonding area at the interface layer is one of the key parameters for assessing the extent of the damaged area; additionally, the reflection amplitude exhibits a favorable correlation with the overall damage level. The technique developed in this study was applied to the inspection of the turbine bearings at several power plants in Korea whereby the applicability in the field can be ascertained.

  • One of the serious problems that make the flaw identification in a multi-layered thick composite panel more difficult is the interferenceeffect of the upper layer. To take care of such a problem, here we propose an image enhancement approach that can get rid of such an interference effect to ultrasonic C-scan images by a normalization of the acquired signals by a reference signals, and demonstrate its performance in the experiments. Specifically, three specimens with artificial flaws are prepared and ultrasonic C-scan images are acquired experimentally to eliminate the undesired interference effect. Cleat successes are observed in the present study demonstrating the high potential of the proposed algorithm as a practical image enhancement tool in many practical situations.

  • Computer-aided high frequency ultrasonic is applied to aluminum oxide(85w%, 94w%, 96w%, and 99w%) MOR(modulus of rupture) samples to evaluate mechanical properties such as density variation, pore content, elastic modulus, shear modulus, and poisson's ratio. Ultrasonic wave velocity and attenuation measurement techniques were used as an evaluator of such properties. Pulse-echo C-Scan images with different fate setting method using 50MHz center frequency 1 inch focal length transducer allows evaluation of density variation and pore content. Elastic modulus calculated with the relation of density and ultrasonic velocity. It shows good reliability as compared with resonance method. Sintered density variation of $0.025g/cm^{3}$, that is 0.6% of theoretical density in $Al_{2}O_{3}$ samples can be observed by ultrasonic velocity measurement. Attenuation measurement method qualitatively agree with 4-point fracture testing result concerning of porosity content.

  • A defect analysis program for a composite motor case was developed to apply the ultrasonic signal processing method, based on the ultrasonic pulse-echo method. With the proposed defect analysis program, defects of FRP delamination and FRP/Rubber disbond in the composite motor case could be quantitatively measured. The defects detected in the composite motor case were in good agreement with the results measured with the computed tomography and video microscope. This paper described the development process of the defect analysis program to convert the ultrasonic test data into the C-Scan images.

Fracture Behavior of Pre-cracked AISI 4130 Specimens by Means of Acoustic Emission and Ultrasonic C-scan Measurements (음향방출과 초음파 C-scan을 이용한 AISI 4130 균열재의 파괴거동 연구)

  • Fracture behavior of pre-cracked compact tension specimens made of AISI 4130 steel was investigated using acoustic emission (AE) and ultrasonic C-scan measurements. While each specimen was loaded up to a certain level, various acoustic emission parameters were recorded together with the crack opening displacement (COD). An elastic-plastic finite element analysis was performed to calculate COD and the damage (plastic) zone size ahead of crack tip. Ultrasonic C-scans, in a pulse-echo, immersion mode, were done for mapping the damage zone size. The agreement between the finite element results and the measured COD was satisfactory. Based on AE results, the test specimens were found to show ductile behavior. The slope of the total ringdown counts vs. COD curve was useful to determine the crack initiation. The preliminary C-scan images showed evidence of changes in the amplitude of ultrasonic signal in the damaged region, and the shape and size of the damage zone matched qualitatively with the finite element results. A further work on the damage zone sizing was also pointed out.
