  • This paper reviews evolution of the research networks on intense laser science under international and Asian frameworks during 2000 to 2008. The OECD Global Science Forum Steering Committee on Compact, High-Intensity Short-Pulse Lasers led to the establishment of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP) Working Group: International Committee on Ultrahigh Intensity Lasers (ICUIL) and the Asian Intense Laser Network (AILN) in 2004. Through various activities under AILN such as the Asian Symposium on Intense Laser Science (ASILS), the Asian Summer School on Laser Plasma Acceleration and Radiation, and the High-Order Harmonics Workshops, closer relations are being formed among the scientists and also among the young generations working in intense laser science in the Asian regions.

  • An Argon laser pumped Ti:Sapphire laser has been constructed and self-mode locked. Mode-locking was initiated by a moving mirror mounted on the ball slider and maintained by the self-focusing in the laser crystal and an aperture inside the resonator. A prism pair was used to reduce group velocity dispersion. The bandwidth and the pulse width of the mode-locked pulse were 11 nm, $1000\pm20fs$, respectively. ively.

  • A femtosecond laser with 775nm central wavelength and 150 fs of temporal pulse width was used for multi layered glass cutting applications. Ultrashort pulse was effectively used for clean glass cutting with $50{\mu}m$ depth and minimum cutting width. Laser beam was split to two stages and focused on the top surfaces of each layer. Ablation threshold of used glass was measured to be $2.59J/cm^2$. In experiments, 200mW laser power and 1mm/s scanning speed was used for preliminary experiment. Air gap was the major defect occurring parameter and laser power was less sensitive to glass cutting in the experiment. The maximum cutting speed was measured to be 60mm/min with 2kHz, however, Maximum 3m/min cutting speed can be achievable with a commercially available laser with 100kHz.

  • A rate equation model describing the ultrashort pulse formation is presented. The temporal and energy behavior of the distributed feedback dye laser predicted by the model has been compared the earlier papers on DFDL's. The observed good agreement allows application of the theoretical model for picosecond laser.

  • We report 400 femto-second highly stable, nearly transform-limited, pulse generation at 10 GHz in $1540{\sim}1550$ nm wavelength region by adiabatic soliton pulse compression of an actively mode-locked fiber ring laser output. Without using any supermode selection device, supermode beating noise has been suppressed below -123 dB/Hz, resulting less than 100 femto-second timing jitters at the noise band of $1\;kHz{\sim}100\;MHz$.

  • Recently, analysis of transient Raman backscattering in a plasma reported(2.3) that it is possible to reach 10$\^$17/ W/cm$^2$ for 1 micrometer wavelength laser pulse with a counter-propagating pump pulse. The basic mechanism is like this : whorl the two counter-propagating waves in a plasma satisfy the condition of Raman backscattering, w$\_$0/ : w$\_$1/ + w$\_$p/, energy is transferred from the long pulse to the short pulse via three wave interaction(4). • We report on a diode-laser-pumped mode-locked Yb:KGW laser system, which delivers ultrashort pulses down to 89 fs at a repetition rate of 63 MHz, with an average power of up to 5.6 W. A fiber-coupled diode laser at 981 nm, operated with a compact driver, is used to optically pump the gain crystal via an off-axis parabolic mirror. A semiconductor saturable-absorber mirror is used to initiate the pulsed operation. Laser characteristics such as the pulse duration, spectrum bandwidth, and output power are investigated by varying the intracavity dispersions via changing the number of bounces between negative-dispersive mirrors within the cavity. Short pulses with a duration of 89 fs, a center wavelength of 1,027 nm, and 3.6 W of output power are produced at a group-velocity dispersion (GVD) of -3,300 fs2. As the negative GVD increases, the pulse duration lengthens but the output power at the single-pulse condition can be enhanced, reaching 5.6 W at a GVD of -6,600 fs2. Because of pulse broadening at high negative GVDs, the highest peak intensity is achievable at a moderate GVD with our system.

  • The real time autocorrelator has been developed in order to measure the pulse widths of ultrashort laser pulses using the SHG method. The scanning range of the autocorrelator is 142 ps, and inserting a delay block in one arm of the autocorrelator, the scanning range can be extended to 250 ps. The shortest pulse width was measured to be 20 ps, when the cavity length was well matched to the RF frequency of the mode-locker, and broadened to be 39 ps and 47 ps as the cavity length was detuned.

  • A Second Harmonic Generation Frequency Resolved Optical Gating(SHG FROG) system was developed. Its performance test shows that it is capable of accurately measuring the temporal evolution of the electric field, both amplitude and phase, of femtosecond light pulses. For the retrieval of the temporal evolution of light pulses from their spectrograms obtained by using the FROG system, Principal Components Generalized Projection(PCGP) algorithm is used and in addition we used additional constraints of second-harmonic spectrum, marginals in frequency and time-delay of the spectrogram. Such modification of the software brings about significant improvement in speed and stability of the pulse retrieval process.
