Fourteen model pile load tests using a calibration chamber and instrumented model pile were preformed to investigate the variation of the behaviors of driven piles in sands with soil and lateral cyclic loading conditions. Results of the model tests showed that the first loading cycle generated more than 70% of the pile head rotation developed for 50 lateral loading cycles. Lateral cyclic loading also made an increase of the ultimate lateral load capacity of piles for $K_0$=0.4 and an decrease for $K_0$ higher than 0.4. Higher portion of the increase or decrease in the ultimate lateral load capacity by lateral cyclic loading was generated for the first loading cycle due to densification of loosening of the soil around the pile by lateral cyclic loading. It was also observed that a two-way cyclic loading caused higher ultimate lateral load capacity of driven piles than a one-way cyclic loading. When the pile was in the ultimate state, the maximum bending moment developed in the pile increased with increasing $K_0$ value of soil and was insensitive to the magnitude and number of lateral cyclic loading.
The ultimate pullout capacity under inclined dynamic loading is an important measure of the destruction degree of vertical screw piles (anchors) under dynamic actions. Based on the static and dynamic tests on two kinds of model screw piles, the ultimate bearing capacity was researched considering different distance-width ratio of blade (D/W) and preloading ratio. The results compared well with other experimental data available in the literature. This research reveals that D/W might determine the failure model of the piles (anchors), for example D/W = 3.14 or 5; a critical dynamic-static loading ratio (DSLR) existed in the experiments. The critical DSLR was reached under the conditions of 40%~60% preloading (D/W = 3.14) or 20%~40% preloading (D/W = 5), respectively.
This paper presents the numerical parametric analysis on the loading capacity of Channel purlins with screw-fastened sheeting, in which the effects of anti-sag bar and corrugated steel sheet on the ultimate capacity are studied. Results show that the setup of anti-sag bars can reduce the deformations and improve the ultimate capacity of C purlins. The traditional method of setting the anti-sag bars in the middle of the web is favorable. The changing of sheeting type, sheeting thickness and rib spacing has significant effects on the ultimate capacity of C purlins without anti-sag bars, compared with those with anti-sag bars. The proposed design formulas are relatively consistent with the calculations of EN 1993-1-3:2006, which is different from those of GB 50018-2002.
In this paper, full-scale loading tests were performed on a rectangular segmental tunnel lining, which was assembled by steel composite segments, to investigate its load-bearing structural behavior and failure mechanism. The tests were also used to confirm the composite effect by adding concrete inside to satisfy the required performance under severe loading conditions. The design of the tested rectangular segmental lining and the loading scheme are also described to better understand the bearing capacity of this composite lining structure. It is found that the structural ultimate bearing capacity is governed by the bond capacity between steel plates and the tunnel segment. The failure of the strengthened lining is the consequence of local failure of the bond at waist joints. This led to a fast decrease of the overall stiffness and eventually a loss of the structural integrity.
Two full-scale, precast, pretensioned box girders were subjected to shear-dominated loading, one under monotonic loads to failure and the other subjected to one-half million cycles of fatigue loads followed by monotonic ultimate loads. The number of cycles was selected to allow for comparison with previous research. The fatigue loads were applied in combination with occasional overloads. In the present study, fatigue loading reduced the shear capacity by only six percent compared to the capacity under monotonic loading. However, previous research on flexure-dominated girders subjected to the same number of repeated loads showed that fatigue loading changed the mode of failure from flexure to shear/flexure and the girder capacity dropped by 14 percent. The comparison of the measured data with calculated shear capacity from five different theoretical methods showed that the ACI code method, the compression field theory, and the modified compression field theory led to reasonable estimates of the shear strength. The truss model led to an overly conservative estimate of the capacity.
In the present study the behavior of fire and the residual strength of fire-ignited RC slabs are investigated by experimental tests and numerical simulations. The fire tests of RC slabs were carried out in a furnace using the ISO 834 standard fire. The load capacity of the cooled RC slabs that were not loaded during the fire tests was evaluated by additional 3 point bending tests. The influence of the proportion of PP (polypropylene) fibers in the RC slabs on the structural behavior of the RC slabs after the fire loading was investigated. The results of the fire tests showed that the maximum temperature of concrete with PP fiber was lower than that of concrete without PP fiber. As the concrete was heated, the ultimate compressive strength decreased and the ultimate strain increased. The load-deflection relations of RC slabs after fire loading were compared by using existing stress-strain-temperature models. The comparison between the numerical analysis and the experimental tests showed that some numerical analyses were reliable and therefore, can be applied to evaluate the ultimate load of RC slabs after fire loading. The ultimate load capacity after cooling down the RC slabs without PP fiber showed a considerable reduction from that of the RC slabs with PP fiber.
The uplift capacity of a pile for improving the wind resistance of the 1-2 W type plastic film pipe on greenhouses was tested using the plane and corrugated piles with various shapes and diameters. First, the resistant uplift capacity was measured by using the uplift loading on plane piles. As the uplift loading on plane piles increased, the resistant uplift capacity also increased until the loading was reached to ultimate uplift capacity. After ultimate uplift capacity was appeared the uplift displacement, the uplift capacity was decreased gradually. Secondly, the resistant uplift capacity was measured by using the uplift loading on corrugated piles. After the uplift capacity was reached the uplift displacement, the uplift capacity was continually increased or decreased. In general, the ultimate uplift capacity was independent of pile shapes, pile diameter length, and embedded pipe depth. However, the ultimate uplift capacity of a corrugated pile was twice more than that of a plane pile without regard to its diameter and embedded depth. The ultimate uplift capacity per unit pile area was increasing in deeper embedded depth. However, the longer a pile diameter was, the less ultimate uplift capacity. The uplift capacity of a plane pile, used in conjunction with the design wind velocity (26.9m.s$^{-1}$ ) of the project area, was unsatisfiable without regard to diameters and embedded depths of piles, while most of corrugated piles were well appeared uplift capacity under various experimental conditions.
With the development of spatial structures, the joints are becoming more and more complex to connect tubular members of spatial structures. In this study, an approach is proposed to establish high-efficiency finite element model of multiplanar KTX-joint with the weld geometries accurately simulated. Ultimate bearing capacity the KTX-joint is determined by the criterion of deformation limit and failure mechanism of chord wall buckling is studied. Size effect of fillet weld on the joint ultimate bearing capacity is preliminarily investigated. Based on the validated finite element model, a parametric study is performed to investigate the effects of geometric and loading parameters of KT-plane brace members on ultimate bearing capacity of the KTX-joint. The effect mechanism is revealed and several design suggestions are proposed. Several simple reinforcement methods are adopted to constrain the chord wall buckling. It is concluded that the finite element model established by proposed approach is capable of simulating static behaviors of multiplanar KTX-joint; chord wall buckling with large indentation is the typical failure mode of multiplanar KTX-joint, which also increases chord wall displacements in the axis directions of brace members in orthogonal plane; ultimate bearing capacity of the KTX-joint increases approximately linearly with the increase of fillet weld size within the allowed range; the effect mechanism of geometric and loading parameters are revealed by the assumption of restraint region and interaction between adjacent KT-plane brace members; relatively large diameter ratio, small overlapping ratio and small included angle are suggested for the KTX-joint to achieve larger ultimate bearing capacity; the adopted simple reinforcement methods can effectively constrain the chord wall buckling with the design of KTX-joint converted into design of uniplanar KT-joint.
The geogrid encased stone column (GESC) system, which increases the confinement effect, has been developed to improve the load carrying capacity of stone columns. The resonable design method for calculating the geogrid ring tension force and ultimate bearing capacity that can be applied to the design of GESC is proposed. In order to calculate design procedure for GESC, two ultimate bearing capacities were compared. One is the ultimate bearing capacity measured using data of the field loading test in light railway site and the other is the ultimate bearing capacity using suggested design procedure of GESC. The results indicated that design method of GESC higher ultimate bearing capacities compared with field loading test.
The behavior of laterally cyclic loaded piles is affected by the magnitude and number of cycles of cyclic lateral loads as well as loading method (1-way or 2-way loading). In this study, calibration chamber tests were carried out to investigate the effects of loading method of cyclic lateral loads on the behavior of piles driven into sand. Results of the chamber tests show that the permanent lateral displacement of 1-way cyclic loaded piles is developed in the same direction as the first loading, whereas that of 2-way cyclic loaded piles is developed in the reverse direction of the first loading. 1-way cyclic lateral loads cause a decrease of the ultimate lateral load capacity of piles, and 2-way cyclic lateral loads cause an increase of the ultimate lateral load capacity of piles. The change of ultimate lateral load capacity with loading method of cyclic lateral loads increases with increasing number of cycles. It is also observed that the 1-way cyclic loads generate greater maximum bending moment than 2-way cyclic loads for piles in cyclic loading step and generates smaller maximum bending moment for piles in the ultimate state. It can be attributed to the difference in compaction degree of the soil around the piles with loading method of cyclic lateral loads. In addition, it is founded that 1-way and 2-way cyclic lateral loads cause a decrease in the maximum bending moment of piles in the ultimate state compared with that of piles subjected to only monotonic loads.
