This study was carried out to investigate on the formation of resin canal, tylosis and latewood of the major species growing in Chuncheon. Two species of softwoods (Pinus densiflora and Pinus koraiensis) and two species of hardwoods (Quercus mongolica and Robinia pseudoacacia) were used in this experiment. The resin canals of P. densiflora and P. koraiensis were formed from the beginning through the middle of July and in the beginning of May, respectively. It is clear that the resin canal of P. koraiensis was formed much earlier than that of P. densiflora. The tylosis in vessel of Q. mongolica was formed in the middle of May, and the formation in R. pseudoacacia was in the end of May. The latewood in P. densiflora was formed in the middle of August. The latewood in P. koraiensis was formed from the end of September through the beginning of October. While latewood vessels in Q. mongolica were formed in the end of May, and those in R. pseudoacacia from the beginning of June through the middle of June. Consequently, the period of resin canals, tyloses and latewood formation was different among the sample trees, even though the trees were grown under the same conditions.

This study was performed to investigate the basic wood characteristics of Phyllostachys bambusoides, Phyllostaehys nigra var. henonis, and Phyllostaehys pubeseens grown in Damyang district in Korea. There were no significant differences in the anatomical structure of three species and they showed rediculate vessels and tylosis. The bulk density of P. bambusoides, P. nigra var. henonis, and P. pubeseens was 0.61g/$cm^3$, 0.66g/$cm^3$, and 0.58g/$cm^3$ P. respectively. P. pubescens showed the highest cleavage resistance and P. nigra var. henonis showed the lowest cleavage resistance, and therefore P. nigra var. henonis was fittest for the cleaving prosessing of bamboo.
In Drosophila, rhomboid proteases are active cardinal regulators of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) signaling pathway. iRhom1 and iRhom2, which are inactive homologs of rhomboid intramembrane serine proteases, are lacking essential catalytic residues. These are necessary for maturation and trafficking of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-${\alpha}$) converting enzyme (TACE) from endoplasmic reticulum (ER) to plasma membrane through Golgi, and associated with the fates of various ligands for EGFR. Recent studies have clarified that the activation or downregulation of EGFR signaling pathways by alteration of iRhoms are connected to several human diseases including tylosis with esophageal cancer (TOC) which is the autosomal dominant syndrom, breast cancer, and Alzheimer's disease. Thus, this review focuses on our understanding of iRhoms and the involved mechanisms in the cellular processes.
'Yumyeong' is one of the most popular peach varieties in Korea. This study was conducted to monitor the developments of cells and tissues, and the changes in sugar contents during fruit growth and development. At bloom, there were two rows of vascular tissues, and the number and the position of internal vascular bundles were consistent during the fruit growth, however, the number of vascular tissues were increased and the distribution was irregular in the flesh tissues. The tissues between the inner integument and the internal vascular bundles showed different development characteristics from other parenchyma cells which were consisted of small and dense cells containing tannins. Such observation suggested that the stone of peach was consisted of inner epidermis and cells in the internal vascular tissues. The outer epidermis consisted of single layer cells at bloom differrentiated into 1-2 layers by horizontal cell divisions on 14 days after full bloom. On 30 days after full bloom, the epidermis was consisted of 5-6 layers by vertical cell divisions. The cell layers consisting the outer epidermis were gradually decreased to 1-2 layers at maturity. The observations on the changes in the epidermis confirmed that some of the cells consisting the hypodermis of peach fruit were originated from the cells of outer epidermis. Tylosis was observed from 35 days after full bloom and the size and number of tylosis were increased until full fruit maturity. The sucrose content showed the tendency of sharp increase from 50 days to 120 days after full bloom then decrease slightly. After when stone hardening ended, other solids showed a gradual decrease tendency from 80 days after full bloom.
'Yumyeong' peach has desirable characteristics of long shelf-life and specific non-melting nature with long harvesting period. However, some fruits harvested too late tend to show fruit pithiness symptom or internal breakdown. The study was conducted to investigate the differences between fruit flesh pithiness and internal breakdown symptoms, and to find out inducing factors of flesh pithiness in 'Yumyeong' peach. The incidence of flesh pithiness was higher in the fruits harvested late. Sugar and malic acid contents were not different between normal fruits and flesh pithiness fruits, but the acidity was significantly lower affected by low citric acid content in flesh pithiness fruit. In flesh pithiness fruits, calcium contents were low in both skin and flesh. Occurrence of flesh pithiness fruits was high in the years with low precipitation and high temperature for 2 months before harvest. In observations on morphological characteristics, the parts showing flesh pithiness consisted of smaller cells than the normal parts. Tonoplasts were disintegrated and the number of dead cells was high in internal breakdown fruits, while the tonoplasts were intact with contracted vacuoles in flesh pithiness fruits. Tylosises were observed in vascular tissues around the flesh pithiness, therefore, it was assumed that those tylosises restricts flesh tissue development resulting in flesh pithiness. Other varieties such as 'Fantasia' and 'Wolmi' also showed tylosis and smaller cells were observed in the flesh tissue of these cultivars, indicating abnormal growth of the flesh part. These results suggested the possibility of the occurrence of pithiness like symptoms in other peach varieties.
This report observed for anatomical structure and identified species of small wood debris collected at Chungi-Hyankyo, Yunbuk-Chung, Jeju-Hyankyo, Teachung-Hyangkyo and Kwanduk-Chung in Jeju province constructed in a central period of Yi-dynasty, and now named as local cultral assets. 1. Sample of Chungi-Hyangkyo is gymnosperm with window-like pit, axial and radial cannal & dentate ray tracheid. This sample with identified with Pinus densiflora or Pinus thunbergii. 2. Samples of Yunbuk-Chung and Jeju-Hyangkyo are diffuse porous wood having small vessels with scalariform perforation plates scattered almost equally in annual ring, possess heterogenus ray parenchyma & banded apotracheal parenchyma. This sample is identified with Distylium racemosum. 3. Sample of Teachung-Hyangkyo is ring porous wood composed of big vessels of pore zone and compound vessels outside pore zone. It also has simple perforation plates, tylosis, homogenlls uniseriate ray parenchyma & diffuse parenchyma This sample is identified with Castanopsis cuspidata. 4. Sample of kwanduk-Chung is ring porous wood composed of big vessels of pore zone and compound vessels outside pore zone. It has simple perforation plates, heterogenus ray parenchyma, crystal, vasicentric parenchyma. This sample is identified with Zelkova serrata.
Species of 741 charcoal samples, which were excavated from the dwelling sites of the bronze age $(about\;2500\~3100\;B.P)$ at Hyeonwha-ri, Pyungteak, Korea, were identified. Most of samples were deciduous oaks (Quercus spp.; $97.7\%$) and others were alders (Ainus spp.; $1.9\%$) and soft pines (Pinus spp.; $0.4\%$). Tree rings of nine largest samples were also examined. The numbers of annual rings were 8 to 36 and mean ring width was rather narrow $(0.65\~1.82\;mm)$. Most samples possessed pith and tylosis. The results indicate that logs 10 to IS cm diameter had been used for the poles of houses without further processing.
The anatomical diagnoses derived from the adventitious buds, the dimples, and their surroundings, which break out often in the Populus alba ${\times}$ P. glandulosa, were investigated by the light microscope. In the anatomical structure derived from the adventitious buds, the vessel seldom occured, the diameters of the cell were smaller and the wall thicknesses were thicker than those of the normal woods. The wood fibers around the adventitious buds were crooked, frequently had the septa, and the adjacent rays showed the multiple rows. The wood fibers of the dimples were extremely crooked from pith to the hark direction and the rays showed the multiple rows. The vessels in the line-like discoloration zone around the adventitious buds and the dimples formed the traumatic tyloses.
This study was carried out to understand the anatomical characteristics of Korean mistletoe (Viscum album var. coloratum) and host tree of Mongolian oak (Quercus mongolica) by the aid of light and scanning electron microscopy. The branch diameter of host tree at the parasitic part by mistletoe is larger than that of non-parasitic part. In the mistletoe, phloem consists of bast fiber and parenchyma cell and xylem is composed of fiber, ray and axial parenchyma cell, and vascular tracheid. The volume of ray parenchyma cell is higher than common wood species and is heterocellular made up of procumbent, upright, and square cells in the mistletoe. In the vascular tracheid of mistletoe, coarse spiral thickenings and bordered pit are present. Due to the insertion of the mistletoe haustorium, some deformed vessels but no tylosis are observed in the mistletoe. The shapes of mistletoe haustorium are sharp, and the destruction of the host tree cells due to the insertion of the mistletoe haustorium are not identified.
The aim of this study was to investigate the anatomical characteristics of Quercus mongolica infested by oak wilt disease. To analysis the anatomical characteristics of the wood specimens infested by the oak wilt, the anatomical structures of an infected wood, a dead wood, and sound wood were observed at 10-year-old intervals from 10 to 50 annual rings using both an optical and a scanning electron microscope. The fiber length was measured in units of 5 annual rings from the pith, and the diameter of the vessel element and the ratio of the vessel including the tyloses were measured for each 10 annual ring. In the cross section, on the infected and dead wood specimens, mycelium was also observed with the tyloses in the vessel. There was no signification difference between the wood specimens in the fiber length and the vessel diameter of the vessel element. The fiber length was not difference after 20-30 annual rings which is a part of juvenile wood. The average of the vessel ratio including tyloses in the infected wood was the highest. Especially, the ratio of tyloses was the highest 40-50 annual rings in the infected wood and the dead wood. Therefore, the large difference between the infested wood by oak wilt and the sound wood was the ratio of tyloses. This result can be used as a basic data to utilize the infested wood.
